Chambery

Chambéry is an Alpine town in southeast France. In the old town is the medieval Castle of the Dukes of Savoy, with historical exhibits. Near Chambéry Cathedral, the 1838 Elephant Fountain honors the 18th-century general Benoît de Boigne. The Musée des Beaux-Arts exhibits include 14th- to 18th-century Italian works. South, the Museum of Charmettes was once home to philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Sights & Landmarks
La Fontaine des Éléphants is a beautiful monument erected in December 1838 to honor the General-Comte de Boigne. Located in the old town of Chambery, it is marked by street signs leading to its center. The fountain features four splendidly designed elephant statues that spray water through their trunks, making it the most famous attraction in the city.
A beautiful fontaine, statue with an interesting story.

Great spot with lots of places to eat nearby. There was even a carousel for the kids when I was there.

Inaugurated in Dec. 1838, this is a monument to celebrate the General-Comte de Boigne. Look carefully around, the path to the fountain is actually marked by indications on the streets of the old town of Chambery…

3.5🌟 we reckon. On the way back from Annecy to Grenoble, we decided to stop in Chambery. It was still early. We were pleasantly surprised that the town has lots to offer too. We parked near the main square. As usual, there are lots of restaurants, cafes, ice-cream parlours at the square. Decided to stroll further after our evening drinks. We arrived at the fountain. Most fountains in larger towns we have seen are always grand and somewhat of a center piece. This one is no different. The elephants have their backs again the fountain, which is of course a defensive posture. As if to tell everyone, they are protecting the fountain. Walking further, we were greeted by several other monuments within the town. A worthwhile stopover with many sights to see.

Centre of attraction in Chambery. Most famous spot in the city.
The Pro — Google review
Beautiful monument and fountain with 4 elephants, 1 on each side spraying water through their trunks. Surrounded by streets that are pleasant to walk and many stores to do some shopping. It is freely accessible and well lit at night. An iconic symbol of the city created to honour a general.

A hidden gem in France. This is such a picturesque beautiful little town, with narrow streets and lovely restaurants. Slap bang in the middle of the French Alps.

La Fontaine des Éléphants in Chambéry is a true gem. The beauty of the sculpted elephants is simply breathtaking and the attention to detail is amazing. The fountain is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a peaceful and serene place to relax. The atmosphere is peaceful and calming, and it's a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. I highly recommend visiting La Fontaine des Éléphants for anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful oasis in Chambéry. Whether you're a local or a tourist, this stunning fountain is not to be missed.

Beautiful sculptures and fountains but the businesses surrounding them are so so... Could do with some landscaping and place making.
Zac Robinson — Google review
A large fountain with elephants on four sides. Water spouts from the trunks so when it's hot, you can have an elephant cool you a bit
Seimen Burum — Google review
There's lot's of beggars and homeless in the vicinity who disturb you by photoshooting. Restaurants around the square are nice, though. With a nice scene for photography.

Such a unique sight seeing at the center if Chambéry. A very beautiful fountain with great history. It’s located at the entrance of the old city of Chambery which is also a unique path to walk since the architecture is so really beautiful.

Cathédrale Saint-François-de-Sales is a historic monument renowned for its exquisite trompe l'oeil ceiling paintings, stained glass and organ. The entire area surrounding the cathedral in Chambery boasts of stunning architecture that is as beautiful as the interior of the church itself. This medieval town has many preserved buildings with original exteriors but stunningly beautiful interiors. The inside architecture is particularly striking, highlighted by the painted ceiling that adds to its beauty and grandeur.

The Château des Ducs de Savoie is an ancient castle that currently serves as a government office and a small museum of history. It boasts a well-maintained interior of the new palace, and visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the mi-rond tower. Additionally, an intriguing exhibition showcasing historical maps of the region is on display. The castle is one of the most exquisite sites in Chambery, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history and architecture.

The castle is still used today by the government. So it's not much of a tourist attraction. There is a small museum inside with information on the history of Savoie and a large collection of old coins. It is possible to do tours but you need to speak to the tourist information first in the town centre. If you like history it's worth the visit.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambéry is located in a former granary at the town's entrance, redesigned by architect Francois Pelaz in the 19th century. Initially housed in the Town Hall, it was relocated after Hector Garriod Baron offered his collection of 140 works. The museum showcases paintings from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
This museum is not very big, you can spend like 1 hour or 2 at most in here, but they have cool things! I really liked the paintings of Judith and Dido in the permanent collection and the landscapes on the top floor. Staff were very nice!
Tariq Leinen — Google review
Small regional museum, only a few paintings on one floor for a population of 140.000 (the temporary exhibition was closed in winter). Price is not expensive (3€ for a visit of 1hour) and there is also a restaurant and underground parking.

Updated for 2023: The whole station build has been rebuilt since my first visit in 2017. Plenty of seating, light and airy. Free toilets inside. Adequately functional, but not entirely pleasant. Not much seating, and few places to eat. No toilets in the station building but portaloos out front.

Not bad station to be honest. But guys, where are marks for voie C? Why you don't put marks of C inside train station building? After that there was no marks of C in tunnel (only in front upstairs there is a marks B C).
Iskander Mukatayev — Google review
What to say? This is a regional train station, it has the Minimum amenities it's comfortable enough for stopovers and provides a convenient place to access the Alps so expect it to be busy during the winter months! You can find quick bites to eat, places to sit and toilets.
Peter Giovinazzo — Google review
Clean and very spacious station. Like every other station in france, it has a Relay shop, a bakery place that serves croissant and coffee, and it has a resting place that has wifi. The staff is very helpful and the trains are mostly on time. However, the area is sometimes not very clean, and smells bad on certain days.

Les Halles is a cozy and intimate tavern with cabin-style touches, making it the perfect spot to enjoy mountain-region home cooking. The salad with beef was wonderfully tasteful, and the orange juice was not freshly made but still came in a small bottle. However, one downside of Les Halles is that the service can be somewhat slow at times. Nevertheless, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out if you're looking for some good food in central Geneva.
I had the lunch set menu with a starter, main and dessert. The food was amazing and the environment was great! It is really a great spot to eat local food! The restaurant was full so I would recommend making a reservation as it would be close to impossible to walk-in on a weekend.

We all loved the food and the setting. We all had different dishes and without exception they were all very very good. The service was a bit slow but it was a busy Saturday evening, so we'll let that go because we liked everything else so much! We took our difficult 3 year old and it was great as there is a big courtyard for him to run around whilst we ate and chatted. A rare restaurant experience where we could relax!
expatmum 2 — Google review
Onestly, terrible place. Not only all the fries we had ordered were wiggly but also the service was trash: since we asked for some oil and Tabasco and we waited 15 minutes. Also the ribs were ugly and full of fat and the BBQ sauce was gross.

Guests have praised the warm welcome and delicious dishes, with generous portions of raclette and attentive service. The ambience is perfect for a romantic dinner, with friendly and smiling waitstaff providing excellent recommendations about each dish. The cheese fondue is particularly popular, served in large portions and accompanied by helpful, knowledgeable staff.

We spent a very good night at Le Savoyard Restaurant. My wife and I went there for a romantic dinner and we both really enjoyed the ambience, the service and the food! All the waitress that served us were super nice and smiling, the smile these days is very rare so it was really pleasant. The food, well as you can see from my pictures, the presentation was already incredible, bit the taste was even better! All the dishes that we received was super tasty and very well executed. The best part was the dessert, the tartlette caramel-hazelnut!! OMG, how good it was! Make sure to leave some space for it at the end of your meal, it's a MUST!

I had an incredible time at La Cote et lArete, enjoying both lunch and dinner. The staff provided excellent service, and the food and wine were of the highest quality. The dry aged ribeye was exceptional, accompanied by a selection of five delicious sauces and fantastic French fries. I finished off the meal with indulgent profiteroles, generously offered by Jeremy, the restaurant's founder.
Perfect white fish! Very nice and kind service and also very good varity of wines. Cozy armosphere and absolutely nice terrace! Definetely would recommend :)

This is a lively place. The service and staff were perfect. We decided to take the menu that comes with a starter, a main dish and dessert. The starter (gavlax au saumon) and the desserts (profiterol & mousse chocolat) were excellent. For main dishes we took two faux fillets and two fillet des boeufs. For the faux fillets, the meat could have less grass. This is only one negative thing. Very great place though

We had an amazing experience at La Côté et l’Arête. We had lunch and dinner and both moments were priceless: staff, food and wine at their best. The dry aged ribeye was probably the best I had in my life topped with 5 sauces and great French fries. We ended the diner with profiteroles (huge and delicious) and the founder of the restaurant Jeremy offered generously the digestifs for our table. I recommend deeply this restaurant and we will come back for sure on our next trip to France!

Caroline Bottomley — Google review
Onze ervaring was echter geheel anders. (Translated by Google) Strange that this restaurant gets such a good rating on Google. It is also strange that it was extremely busy in the restaurant; all tables were occupied. Apparently a good place to eat in the eyes of the local public. However, our experience was completely different. Bad, we can't make much more of it with two people. Independently of each other, that is what we thought of it. The sirloin steak is promoted as The Best. We wondered how bad the rest will be.... Less than five minutes after our order, twice medium fried entrecote, the plates were delivered. A lukewarm piece of meat on both plates. Just not cold anymore. The meat turned out to be almost raw on the inside, completely red. Not even rare let alone medium. Near one plate, a piece of fat, which was about a third of the meat, was neatly hidden under the salad. This way you will of course quickly get the promised 400 grams of sirloin steak.... The salad was drizzled with too much oil. The fries looked unappetizing, they were not crispy and warm. And above all, much too dark. And that on both signs. It seemed that these plates were prepared in advance under a warming lamp. So that customers are served quickly. This can happen at McDonald's, we really expected more from La Côte et l'Arête. For €26.00. Although the service was very friendly, no one came to ask if everything was to your liking. Yes; when the plates were empty. We didn't trust it anymore, didn't have dessert or coffee. Didn't tip and left. Shame. Because the environment looks good and the raw meat in the refrigerator looks excellent. Apparently the kitchen manages to completely mess it up... Is this an organizational choice or a one-off mistake? Are we perhaps spoiled as Dutch people and do the French prefer the experience?
Rob Smeets — Google review

We went to the restaurant and after 15 minutes of waiting, we were finally served by an unfriendly man. We told him we wanted to have a drink and something little to eat and, even though more than half of the tables were empty, he told us that if we weren't really going to eat, they wouldn't give us a table. Very nice place but the service was a disaster. We do not recommend it at all.
