Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to embark on a journey through three distinct adventure worlds: Alaska, Africa, and Asia. Spanning over 30 hectares, this expansive zoo provides a natural habitat for more than 900 animals across 100 species. Families with young children will find it especially enjoyable, as there are playgrounds and boating activities available.
The Zoo is Wonderful. We experienced so many adventures but this one is on the top 3. Perfect space and care for the animals, super entertainment for the families and great outdoor places for lunches. We'll come back for sure 😄😄😄
NATASHA NATE — Google review
Great zoo where the animals are almost as important as the visitors. The animals have a really big and well care environment to move. The visitors must follow one of the 3 different round paths(Africa, Asia or Alaska). You cann se a whole amount of different spices. Perfect to bring the kids. A lot of food and drink options along the way and a great playground for the kids. Parking is also very easy and the prices are good (zoo and parking) The evening ticket (from 16) is totally worth it if you want to just take a look around.
Jorge Sotillo — Google review
Entrance fee about 21 euro. For students 15 euro. There are 3 different type of zoo sections inside: Asian, African and Alaska zoos. Many photos added. Some adventure places were closed because of COVID-19. There are free and paid parking places. Just come to the street next to the entrance of the zoo and you can park here free. Free toilets inside.
Anar Orujov — Google review
The best experience in NRW! Absolute delight. I spent one of the best day at ZOOM. It's the perfect place to have an amazing quality time with friends/family alike. If you're fascinated my animals then just visit this place. Although, carry your own food and drinks along. You can have a nice picnic in one of the open dining spaces.
Arushi Singh — Google review
This is probably the best zoo I've ever been to. Super cool layout and design. I appreciated all the little details to make it feel like you were really in one of the three 'areas'. I think my fav part, besides the awesome animals, was the way the guests move through the zoo. Everyone goes one way through the zoo, so even though I went on a busy Saturday it didn't feel nearly as busy as the Koln zoo for instance. Can't wait to go again!
Rocketeer — Google review
A great place to be with your family members especially when you've small kids in your family... Actually we love to see animals so, we bought a year ticket (Jahreskarte) and with this ticket, you will get some discounts as well in other partner zoos. Normally in Zoos, animals are often kept in small spaces but here in Zoom Erlebniswelt, the spaces provided to the animals are really big and are well maintained and well decorated with natural plants and greeneries.. So it somehow gave me a feeling of natural parks.
Ujjwal Joshi — Google review
A great place for a few hours' walk with additional entertainment. Entrance ticket for an adult about 22 euros. (Parking 3 and 6 euros). The zoo consists of 3 parts divided thematically in terms of region - there is an Asian, African and Alaska part. In each of them, in addition to animals from a given region, you will also find vegetation, as well as architecture and individual decorative elements. Each part has a dining area, toilets, as well as an individual attraction (interactive ice adventure, boat trip, huge playground, etc.). In many places, there is a nicely integrated slide for kids, which diversifies their time. All descriptions only in German, too bad.
Vanalai — Google review
The experience was amazing. The zoo is laid out in 3 parts (africa; Asia and antarctica) and you need to assume an hour at least to walk through each. The paths are wonderfully laid out and the decoration and foliage always matches the continent you're visiting. There's many enclosures to see and they seem to always be clean and the animals well taken care of! Entry was about 23 euros which is just fine for a zoo this size and quality in my opinion.
Des — Google review
I don't know if it was because we went in November, it seemed a bit neglected to me. But overall it was nice. I think some of the animals had limited space and were very unhappy because of it. Seals and penguins are great fun.
Abdl A — Google review
We have been here with friends and our daughter. This is really a big place to explore and good. Definitely visit this as you can find many things here. We had even tried the Alaska experience on the 8 minute ride which was super good. This was not for younger kids.
SONIA BEDI — Google review
The zoo has a great selection of animals and is divided up into three continents. There are AWESOME playgrounds for kids in all of the the different continents with both indoor and outdoor exhibits. I would very highly reccomend it. We have season tickets and go all the time.
Aaron tenkink — Google review
If your planning to go at this zoo please don’t hesitate, it’s so beautiful and they are a variety of different animals to see we actually went for a ride in snow 😂in Alaska which was so beautiful, the food there is a bit pricey so you can pack your own food and drinks and then enjoy, everything there is very beautiful

Stadium
Sights & Landmarks
VELTINS-Arena, constructed in 2001, is a futuristic and visually striking soccer stadium that serves as the home ground for FC Schalke 04. The venue boasts a retractable roof system, making it suitable for various weather conditions. Additionally, it features a movable pitch that can be adjusted to accommodate football matches or musical concerts. Visitors can also explore the club museum within the stadium.
The atmosphere is unbelievable at this indoor stadium. You need to add money to a special card before you can buy food or drink so don't get in the food drink queue first.
Tracey Nichols — Google review
Concert and Stadium were Perfect. But travelling there and back on the t Tram was a bit of a nightmare, we were packed in like Sardines not enough trams for the amount of people.
Angela Lewandowski — Google review
Huge stadium that is pretty easy to navigate. €5 for a beer and €2 deposit for the plastic cup, so as long as you take it back you’ll get a cheaper beer. Doesn’t appear to be a lot of Germans who drive to the stadium so be prepared for packed trains. We waited an hour after the game finished to get the train and even then it was packed. Worth a visit though.

One of the uniquest arena in the world. World class atmosphere and great staff. Rich of history and well designed.
G?nter Mcaffy — Google review
The concert was fantastic, but the parking facilities were poor. We were lucky, but I think a lot of people missed quite a bit of the concert trying to park their cars and sitting in stationary traffic about 1 km from the arena. Definitely need to arrive an hour or better two , before your concert starts.
Helen Wishart- Kotthoff — Google review
It has retractable roof system which is cool during winter. The stadium itself is nice and clean. Just getting in took a really long time and parking was difficult at first. We followed the signs to the Area Park Haus and stayed in a long line of cars getting to the parking lot at the stadium only to know that we were not allowed to park there without pre-booked parking ticket. Then we drove out and found a parking lot near by (you can type Parkplatz E2 in Google)
Le Dang — Google review
Outstanding soccer stadium. Enjoyed the Champions League match there vs Galatasaray on 06 Nov 2018. Great atmosphere, good prices on concessions, easy to reach on the #302 trains, lots of service before and after games. Great place to watch soccer!

I watched the Mexico play against Portugal in this stadium during the 2006 World Cup / Weltmeister. Excellent memories of Gelsenkirchen and their wonderful hospitality.
Dr. Edward Pultar, PhD — Google review
It was very comfortable and well organized despite all of the chaos. Many people accumulate in the food stalls, which makes it difficult for people to go across the narrow corridors, and there are also very few toilets available for women. I paid €3.10 for a Bratwurst. The food wasn’t that bad. Only card payments are accepted.
Maria Clara N — Google review
Schalke's ground has a lot going for it. The views are incredible, and it feels like a small stadium but seats 60k. Knocking a star off for the lack of facilities. Massive queues for everything including entering the stadium. The toilet queue was ridiculous. There were 3 urinals. The area we were sat in had thousands of people in it.
Chris Gilder — Google review
Excellent stadium. Well organised, good catering and facilities in general. Approaching the parking lot can be a bit tricky if you are late. Traffic then already accumulates on highway. But that's manageable if you arrive well before the game. Same applies when leaving. Best is to take a nice walk around the complex after the game and enjoy a nice cold Veltins beer.
Luc G. — Google review
Incredible modern stadium with a retractable roof suitable for inclement weather conditions and a sliding in and out pitch to accommodate football matches or musical concerts. Restaurants, grilling stations and cafes also contribute to creating an amazing FC Schalke 04 match day experience in what is a brilliant atmosphere for visiting and home fans. Best to arrive very early to mitigate vehicle parking issues.
Fred Fox — Google review
Attended the Ed Sheeran concert here in July 2022, and was awestruck at the awesome arrangement at Veltins Arena. I think it's an apt location for concerts and can be reached by trams from Gelsenkirchen hbf. I would recommend this arena for concerts definitely.
Siddharth Gupta — Google review
Lyconet. I liked the arena. The food selection was good for everyone except me, a low-carb vegetarian. But the place itself is lovely. The signs for navigation should improve. A, B and C parking is somewhere else than C sector. But once you know, learn by mistakes; it's easy to get along.

It's a place worth visiting for the architecture alone: a stunning building. Speaks volumes of the former glory of Gelsenkirchen, while the city now seems to be circling the sinkhole, this gem still shines. Theatre, ballet, opera and concert productions are fewer than they used to be but I still go every time I am back in my old home town of Gelsenkirchen.

Beautiful Germany hotel in the centre of the park. Only stayed for one night but i could see it was very well prepared for weddings. Stayed in a junior suite that was massive! With my wife and two kids. Room was great, beds were quite hard but you cant have it all! Breakfast was fantastic with freshly squezze orange juice, cooked breakfast, fresh rolls pastries, meat and cheese. The waitress was amazing!!

This brunch is in my opinion is not worth 39 euros per person. The food is edible but there's no wow factor. I also didn't appreciate the fact that the chefs tending to the buffets had dirty aprons on. I was a chef 👨‍🍳 for 16 years and that's definitely a no no. Get it together guys where's your professional pride? I found the service personnel to be friendly enough and the location was good 👍. There's a great deal of room for improvement here. Maybe I will come back and do a checkup in a few months 🤔.

This used to be a great place to eat out - gorgeous surroundings and beautiful old building. Unfortunately the quality of the food and the value for money is not up to date anymore (plus the interior is rather old fashioned but if the food is great I would not say anything!). In our group of seven two of beef filets had to be returned as they were well done rather than medium rare. My pasta with prawns had 2.5 prawns and was overcooked - I could go on. We gave feedback to the kitchen and the head of restaurant who was thankful for our comments after coming a few times a year, however I don’t think we’ll come back anytime soon.

Great place. Clean and cozy room. The restaurant was even better. The service gave us a table even though the restaurant had a "menu" night. The food was delicious and the prices were very reasonable.. Cheaper than many bad restaurants in Germany. The service was probably the best. Real waiters that know how to treat the customer. I worked in Restaurants for over ten years and can only recommend this place. Excellent.

Everything was perfect. If I were forced to find one thing that was wrong is that the chips in the mini bar were expired but they still tasted fine. Great restaurant, welcoming staff, comfortable room that was spotless, I felt like I was in Italy, not in Germany, which was exactly what I needed. I want to live in room Palermo but I cannot, sadly. Grazie mille

We didn't have any room there so my review is only for the restaurant. Service: Could be more attentive. And i only give 3 because at the end of our dinner we ordered 2 Americano. The waiter brought us 2 cocktails called americano but we wanted the coffee americano. He then said we should have told him that we mean the coffee. I don't know any cocktail called americano and wherever i ordered one i always got the coffee. It is his job to awk if he isn't sure and knowing there are 2 types of americano. He tried to be funny by saying that he has to drink them ( being funny is not his strong side) and next time we should say what we mean. Sorry i am not working there. It's his job to male sure he brings the correct thing Food: Couple of steaks ( beef and lamb) and pasta. All very good and tender. For the steak with the balsamico sauce a bit less sauce would have been even better. Still a good steak though. Panna cotta was ok but had better ones.

Mooie nette kamer. (Translated by Google) Nice neat room. Downsides were that the shower door could not be closed very well and it was terribly hot... but probably due to the extreme heat. Breakfast quite okay Not super extensive but sufficient. Free parking on the street if you find a spot.

Had my wedding dinner here with the whole family. It was literally hit and miss. 50% of the food was just not good, and we are talking about signature dishes like Spaghetti Carbonara and Tiramisu. The waiter was constantly interrupting table conversation loudly and added a few bottles of wine and some mains on the bill, which we luckily caught. Unfortunately he then tried to argue that we were wrong, which is not something you should do with a customer. Nobody of our family will ever go there again...

Super friendly manager that helped us out. Room was great, bed super comfortale. Only complaint i could think of is the room location, its on the top floor so a little warm when the sun is out, but nothing bad. We organized a bigger client dinner together with Casino Zollverein. It was very impressive that we did not had to decide the main dish beforehands, but they asked at the beginning of the dinner. The food was excellent. We went for the starters Förderturm and Bergmanns something and they have been delicious same as the tuna I had. The atmosphere was cosy, the staff very friendy, attentive and extremely forthcoming. Due to a rainy wheather forecast the outdoor areas was not prepared, but when asked, they did not hesitate to bring the cushion etc. so we could spend the time before and after dinner outside enjyoing the lovely summer night.

We arrived by car in the dark. Waze sent us to a car park outside Mezzo; in fact the entrance to the restaurant was on the other side of a 6 ft high wall. Eventually we found our way in. A warm reception, in English, and a generous table for six, instead of the four booked. Good bread and a dip en lieu d'entrée. Competent cooking. Good wine. But a truly fantastic setting amongst the massive concrete pillars and old iron steam machinery. And impeccable and friendly service. Book in advance on line. We found our way out a lot more quickly.

Absolutely NOT recommended. Bellini and Aperol Spritz too sweet and juicy (where was the alcohol?). Appetizer very expensive for a very small portion and a stale taste, not balanced. The pasta with shrimp was inedible, sent back. It was over-cooked and sticky, drowned in cream and spices, shrimp not good quality. Location and service good, but food is bad and expensive. 2 Aperitivi, 1 antipasto, 2 pasta 79€. Very disappointing experience. Never again...

Visitors have praised the delicious food, with highlights such as carbonara spaghetti, salmon fillets, and vegetarian options like carpeletti. The staff is described as friendly and accommodating, with many speaking English for international guests.
Overall the restaurant provided very nice dining experience~ I ordered carbonara spaghetti and salmon fillets. The carbonara spaghetti was a bit salty. The salmon fillets taste good, it was crispy and juicy. The environment of the restaurant was relaxing. Nice location that it only takes 5 minutes walk from the UNESCO- Welterbe Zollverein to the restaurant.

The Waldhaus am See, a German restaurant located by the lake, offers delectable dishes such as Tiramisu and Souffle that were exceptionally delightful. The ambiance is superb, with a pleasant terrace overlooking the water. However, it's perplexing why smokers are permitted to indulge in their habit in public areas; for those seeking a toxin-free experience on the terrace, this may be disconcerting.
