Pecs

Pécs is an ancient city in southern Hungary, close to the Croatian border. Founded by the Romans, it's known for its architectural landmarks such as the Early Christian Mausoleum, which features frescoed tombs. Vast Pécs Cathedral towers over central Szent István Square. The domed Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim was built in the 16th century during the Ottoman occupation of the city and is now a Catholic church.

Sights & Landmarks
Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is an extensive cultural hub in the site of a former 19th-century ceramic factory. It's divided into four main areas catering to craftspeople, families and children, creative pursuits, and university programs. Visitors can stroll down the street of artisan shops or browse through the impressive Gyugi Collection containing over 700 Zsolnay pieces while learning about the history of both the factory and its founding family through exhibitions.
This place is a must in Pecs. You can feel the arts in the air. I went there rather early in the morning, there were few people and I enjoyed myself disco bring lovely selfie spots, visiting the glove factory and listening to the students at the Academy of Music. Ten stars, even if the pottery factory was closed.

We visited the Gyugyi collection with tour guide, it is an absolutely worth to visit! Really nice ceramics and some nice facts about the family.

While my bigger child was enjoying the show in the planetarium, my little one was playing in the park just above it. There are so many things to do, exploring the lovely exhibitions and shops that you can easily spend some hours there without realising it. My children really loved the little chocolate shop where you can find some unique chocolates that you would not find anywhere else. And their selection of hot chocolates is very good and tasty.

Free of charge playground and sports fields. Could be more variety of grounds and more play things for kids but sufficient. Or to get some fresh air with the family. You can find shelter in small wooden houses or under the playthings in case of rough weather.

Art museum
The Csontváry Museum, situated in the charming city of Pécs, Hungary, is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts. It is a Neo-Renaissance-style museum that was established in 1973 and features both permanent and rotating exhibitions of Hungarian paintings. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the remarkable works of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, a renowned Hungarian painter.
What are massive surprise for uncultured Geordie… having never heard of Csontváry I was very excited to discover this museum. I had my dog with me, which I thought would be a problem. However, Ava, the amazing lady on reception offered to keep him behind the reception. He is very well trained and exceptionally patient. I’m not sure this service would be offered for your average untrained noisy dog. However, I must say a massive thanks to Eva. The exhibition is brilliant. It covers examples from the full range of his career. The pencil sketches are experimental and represent immediate that he was not himself all together comfortable in. However, they are amazing. The classics as I’ve now discovered are on full display, including an awe, inspiring rendering of the Tatra mountains. This is definitely the highlight of my visit in Hungary. The entry ticket was about €15 And well worth it.
Richard Turk — Google review
Very small museum (5 rooms). Nearly the entire collection is here on Google reviews. Some very large paintings. At about $5 entry fee, it's expensive for a small collection (hopefully the Louvre won't charge $1 per gallery!)
Joe Stuligross — Google review
All of his most famous pieces are prominently displayed, along with some great sketches I had not seen. Nice large spaces, but only accessible up some significant stairs, so not for the walking impaired.
Joe Bencharsky — Google review
What a delight this exhibition offers. A pinch of alienation, a kind of budding surrealism is applied to the representations of humans mostly playing secondary roles on paintings. Expect large canvases with bold colours and intense contrasts spearheading future abstract forms as the XXth century advances towards avant-garde art movements. Your senses will be captured mostly by depictions of nature and its underlying stories. You need space to acquire sensations transmitted by the paintings and here you will have plenty of them. This is a unique collection from an amateur painter that has his own peculiar place in art history.
Eszter Arato — Google review
Its a little expensive (5000ft/person) but I think it's kinda worth it the exhibition is a little small tho
Huszics Péter — Google review
Beautiful paintings, worth watching and contemplating about.
Ilona Sziraki — Google review
Spent about an hour here. There is not a lot to see. Some very very large murals, colourful and interesting pictures by a single artist. He has a mostly colourful almost gaudily vivid style in many of his paintings with a naive distorted scale and perspective in many of them reminiscent of other more famous painters of the same era. Csontváry was a mostly self taught Artist who travelled outside Hungary extensively and was unappreciated and dismissed by Hungarians until 30 or so years after his death. An interesting scale replica of the Hungarian Crown is in the stairwell and interesting to see, especially if you have seen the original in the parliament. As a tourist it was affordable but I expect for locals it is quite pricey.
Frank S — Google review
Whoever loves Csontvary, this place is a must to visit. Parking is easy outside, and the people working here are very kind and professional. The environment is delightful, and the museum itself is well organized and secured. I loved the vibe here, and for sure, I will be back once I can. Highly recommend this museum! Thank you 😊👍

Museums
The Victor Vasarely Museum, located in Pecs, Hungary, is a classic building that has been open since 1976. It houses the world's largest collection of the renowned Hungarian-French artist's op-art creations, featuring over 400 pieces. The museum showcases symmetrical and largely abstract works with clever illuminations that intensify the 3D experience. While there have been debates about visual distortion, the well-curated selection offers an evocative and eye-bending experience.
A good spot to loosen up and relieve tension. Vasarely’s artwork is pleasing in my eyes and super satisfying to see! Great collection and has a cozy vibe. The Museum also sells merchandise (like masks, shirts, etc.) with Vasarely’s pieces in it and it's beautiful. If you decide to go here, the Museum offers different prices (for students it is discounted) and they will offer you an extra fee if you want to take pictures of the artwork.

The vasarely museum is a nice museum, although no much artifact is found here, but it's a great place to visit if you're in Pécs city.

If you are staying for just a day, this place should not be missed. If you are staying for two, ideally three days, there is a 72h ticket that covers a lot of museums and galleries, one of which is this jewel of a place for a fraction of the total sum of individual tickets.

Whoever loves Vasarely, this museum is a must-visit. It is well organized, tidy and clean. Spacious museum with lovely people working here! I can highly recommend it to anyone, and I am sure I will visit the place once I am back. My family loved it. Thank you for everything, and see you next time, most probably this year 👍🙏
Peter Lukacs — Google review
A good opportunity to see some brilliant pictures! I definitely recommend it, if you like the work of Vasarely!
Ádám Takács — Google review
Nice and rich collection. Worth seeing.
Darinka Jocic — Google review
The museum itself is great though a bit on a smaller side, and the art work is awesome. However, staff's attitude is unacceptable. First of all, there is a guy who constantly follows you and breathes heavily so that you hear him no matter where you go. Then 10 minutes before closing this guy starts saying impatiently that I need to go faster and then runs after the receptionist who tells me the same thing in broken English, even though there are still few minutes left. Pretty pathetic attitude that spoilt the overall experience.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Pécs Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a stunning Catholic church with origins dating back to the 10th century. Situated in the heart of Pecs, Hungary, this active cathedral boasts beautiful gardens and exquisite religious art. Its rich history and magnificent architectural design make it a top tourist attraction in the city. The cathedral's Romanesque Revival look from the 19th century adds to its allure.
A place with amazing energy. A must to visit. From the highest point, a beautiful view of the city opens up.
Michael Martynov — Google review
First if you are a student lucky you. Discounted rates for students. Family as well. Get a ticket at the entrance of the church for either or both a tour to the church and the mosque. Why ticket? To explore the immense beauty of the architecture and or as well as the city. You get to climb into one of the towers and view the city's beauty from above the tower.

Brandly new cathedral wirh rich history, stunning interior. Plius you can climb to the tower and see city's panorama. Recomending to buy a combined ticket together with Belvárosi templom (Blessed Virgin Mary Church).

I would mark this a must-see in Pecs, even if one is not that into the Christian/Catholic faith or churches. Recommend going up to the tower if you have the courage (it's not actually a particularly difficult climb either mentally or physically) as the view is worth it. We have had the privilege to listen to the organ, and it was an amazing experience, definitely a wow-factor.
Daniel Egri — Google review
Truly astonishing. Very striking architecture from the outside and ornately decorated inside. I recommend climbing the tower for sweeping city views. There are various ticket combinations available and discounts for those who qualify. Friendly staff. Unfortunately no bathrooms
Joe Macpherson — Google review
Pecs Cathedral stands as a remarkable example of architectural brilliance, boasting an array of colours and styles that distinctly set it apart from other European cathedrals. Its vibrant decor is a feast for the eyes, presenting a harmonious blend of shades that reflect the cathedral's rich history and the creativity of its restorers. Whether it's the interplay of light through the stained glass or the intricate mosaics, every element works together to create an atmosphere that's both inspiring and tranquil. A visit here is not just a journey through a religious monument but a passage through a gallery of artistry that speaks across cultures and ages. Highly recommended for its unique charm and breathtaking interior.
Paul Vaya — Google review
Nice cathedral in Pets. This is a wonderful place that everyone should visit. The tower view and the basement of the cathedral give you a new experience. There is a separate prayer room inside the church where you can pray, so you can focus on prayer away from tourists. This cathedral is a gracious place. It's best.

Concerts & Shows
Theaters
During the 19th century, theatrical performances in German and Hungarian gained popularity in Pecs. These shows took place in various locations such as dance halls, residences, inns, and coffee houses. Elefantos Haz stood out among the well-known venues of that time. Due to local demand for a permanent theater, the city council formed a committee to oversee its planning. The National Theatre of Pécs is an exquisite restored historic building known for hosting entertaining shows.
Gorgeous outside and inside.

Staying in Pécs for the New Year, our group decided to see a show here. Great atmosphere in a beautifully restored old building which is one of the stars of the show. There was a real buzz to the place and most people were dressed for an occasion which gave a great atmosphere and an exciting buzz. We saw the musical "Mont Marte Iboya"/"The Violet of Mont Marte" and we really enjoyed it.

Rundó Restaurant in Pecs is a convenient and enjoyable place to dine and relax. The extensive menu offers a wide range of delicious Hungarian dishes, all of which are of high quality. It is also a great spot to catch the World Cup games in 2022 while enjoying a tasty meal and refreshing beer. Although it used to be known for its lively party atmosphere back in the 2000s, it has now become more peaceful but remains a favorite pub among locals and visitors alike.
Great choice and very tasty! Very friendly staff and top service!

Good food with moderate prices in Pécs. Good menu selection, nice backyard with tables outside. Dishes are of generous size, served on rustic wooden plates and clay soup pots. Been there three times and can recommend veal paprikash (see photo), goulash soup and cold fruit soup. Duck leg was too dry. Desserts are okay. Recommended.

When I'm in Pecs I go there for a meal and a beer. I love this place for how easy it is. The food menu is wast and it's good quality stuff. Last time I watched the World Cup games '22 and ate nice Hungarian food with a beer and I got what got in for. Ps.: I used to live in Hungary in 2000s and it was the central place to get drunk and go for a party after but now in 2022 it's more quiet but still my favorite pub to go to when I'm in Pecs. Recommend for Hungarian dish and staff is always attentive.

for the last 10 years, we have been eating lunch there on Saturdays and we have never eaten the same daily menu, so varied and we had no objections until last night, we ate fish platter (carp was very salty, salmon toasted, I was delighted with the side dish of pumpkin as french fries, other platter gypsy roast she also disappointed us, I don't understand how it is possible for the daily menu to be perfect and the dinner to fail like that. Today we ate again in the afternoon, delicious

Hungarian restaurant
The Tettye Vendéglő étterem restaurant, once famous and thriving, has lost its former glory. The establishment retains a 1990s aesthetic and the staff's limited language skills in only Hungarian may leave customers frustrated. While the food is satisfactory, it falls short of high quality standards. The overall ambiance resembles that of a decent staff canteen rather than an exquisite dining experience. However, visitors seeking large portions will not be disappointed as the servings are generous and flavorful.
This restaurant has been one of the best here since I’ve been a kid. We ate Fisherman’s Soup and Fish plate. Sooo good, and a huge portion, but we won. Ate the whole thing! Beautiful environment on the Mecsek Hills. Definitely have been coming back since childhood.
B. V. — Google review
The glory years of this restaurant are long gone. The place is in the style of the 1990s. The staff speak no languages other than Hungarian and are rather unhelpful (maybe also frustrated). The food is quite good but far from high quality. The restaurant resembles a very decent staff canteen where you can eat but without delight.

This is a dirty restaurant with the worst dishes and services. We first found a maggot on the water jar. When I showed it to the waitress, they simply took the jar away, wiped it and added more water, without even an apology! We should have left right there. After long time, our dishes arrived. The meat was all way over-cooked, dark and harder than a jerky. The sides were heated instead of freshly cooked. The cucumber salad was swimming in a plate full of diluted watery sour cream. When we complained, the waiter simply shrugged his shoulder and again didn't even bother to say sorry. Only we were sorry to have gone there.

BEWARE. This restaurant has changed hands and the new owners are still posting the old info, reviews and menu. Went there on Thursday evening 11 May 2017 and there were NO customers. Asked to see the menu and there were no lamb, duck, venison and whole grilled fish entrees as before -- only ordinary chicken and pork dishes you can find at any fast food restaurant steam table. The waiter explained the new management situation and apologized. We left without ordering.

(Translated by Google) Very pleasant environment. The service is extremely friendly, courteous and professional. Child-friendly place: the café has a sophisticated play area. We waited a lot, more than an hour. The food is beautiful, works with really special ingredients, very delicious. Unfortunately, we didn’t eat well with the main course dessert pair. I feel like we have to go back and go through a line of appetizers - soup - main course - dessert because that’s how the experience is perfect. The wine selection is very exciting, there are many lesser known regional items on the wine list. (Translated by Google) We visited this peaceful little village, Hosszúhetény, because of the restaurant and spent two great days there. Upon entering the garden of the restaurant, you are greeted by a friendly, cozy atmosphere. Inside, the friendliness and direct atmosphere are complemented by works exhibited by local artists, which harmoniously fit and complement the style of the place. We were very happy to be served dinner by the lady who dreamed it all up. We learned a lot about the history of the restaurant. This artistic line is already echoed on the menu and is fulfilled in the serving, as not only are the dishes beautifully created, but they are served in ceramic bowls hand-made for the restaurant, which turns the meal into a truly unique and special experience. (As we learned, these are changed at the same time as the tasting menu!) The dishes were executed with perfect care, both in terms of presentation and technique. There were also exceptionally good items in terms of taste (e.g. the beef soup, the duck liver and blackberry dessert), but the flavors could be a little bolder. (For example, the trout would have benefited from a slightly more acidic side dish, and overall the sauces could have a slightly richer, more pronounced taste.) The wine pairings were excellent. Courage also appears here, e.g. the Georgian semi-sweet saperavi was a perfect match for the dessert. On behalf of our fellow wine lovers, we recommend that the wine be served at the table, because that way we have the opportunity to get to know the bottle as well. Overall we had a great time. It was a friendly and pleasant dinner experience. We will be happy to return. We wish Hosszú Tányér the best of luck in the future! A borpárosítások kiválóak voltak. Sok sikert kívánunk a Hosszú Tányérnak a továbbiakhoz!

(Translated by Google) Fantastic food, professional service. The place is not too big, not too crowded, which only adds to the intimate, warm atmosphere. The food and drinks are also special and harmonize very well with each other. It was a wonderful experience, I can only recommend it.

(Translated by Google) Pleasant atmosphere, calm, friendly fine dining restaurant, with friendly, attentive service. The tasting menu is a dream, at an excellent price. Cheap compared to the prices in Pest. It is a nice and special gesture to be able to look into the kitchen and watch the chef at work. We can't wait to go again! (Original) Kellemes hangulatú, nyugodt, barátságos fine dining étterem, szívélyes, figyelmes kiszolgálással. A degusztációs menü álom, kiváló áron.

(Translated by Google) Dear Hosts! It was the first time we visited Nálatok, the Hosszú tányér restaurant, but it certainly won't be the last, because the evening spent there had a very positive effect on us. The restaurant is located in a familiar location, the furnishings are rustic, and the atmosphere of the place is very cozy. From the introduction to the menu, it becomes clear that the guest is not just "one of many" but is respected, which means that he can ask questions at any time or even go to Attila's kitchen to chat if he feels like it.... Franciska was also very cute and kind, and she readily answered our questions... She told us about the reason for the establishment of the restaurant and its special story! The dishes are made from quality ingredients, during careful preparations, with beautiful decoration and serving technique. The soft classical music that plays during dinner ensures a deeper enjoyment of the taste experiences... Thank you very much for the warm hospitality! Köszönjük szépen a szívélyes vendéglátást!
