Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is a 12th-century mountain fortress that has been restored with an artillery platform, medieval garden and royal rooms. The ruins of this beautiful castle were gifted to the German emperor Wilhelm II in 1901 by the town of Selestat. Visitors should reserve tickets online in advance as picnics are not allowed inside and there is only a small cafeteria available. The tour includes many stairs distributed across different levels but offers breathtaking views.
Castliest of the castles. Really well laid out tour of the chateau with some amazing views as well. Though they warn of a lot of steps, they come in smallish chunks as you tour different levels, so don't let the stairs count scare you off.

This is a medieval castle which has a unique history where the ownership has changed between Germany and France. You get to see a lot of rooms on your visit and spectacular scenery of the surrounding hills. Prepare to climb lots of steps. I liked seeing the stained glass windows. There's information cards in each of the rooms. Unfortunately there were no audio guides left on the day we visited, which was a bank holiday weekend. I would advise to get there early because the parking is on street and limited. You might end up walking far to reach the castle. But it's certainly worth a visit.

No handicap access. Must be able to walk up and down hills and steps. No elevator access. Other than that, it's a great place to visit!! We had a beautiful day, 19C degrees and blue skies. The castle/fortress is beautiful and well described by the audio guide. It took us about 2 hours to go through. Don't skip the gift shop! It has unique gifts and we received a coupon for 2 drinks & pastries when we spent over 100€. Look at the photos to understand the beautiful and all these walls contain. Doors open at 9:15am and close at 6om.

Beautiful site. Impressive to see. I recommend to do the tour, this is nice to see and not too long. For me the most impressive site in the surroundings. Located in a green environment with some nice roads leading towards it.
Rolf van der Hagen — Google review
Overpriced for its worth. Not sure why everyone says it's worth a visit. You can get the best views overlooking the city without even entering the castle. The castle overall was just okay. Keep in mind that there is no open area on top for photos. You can only take photos from the windows. There is a small cafe on the side. A good plan would be to drive up top and just relax at the cafe and enjoy the views. Parking: Lots and lots of parking spots along the mountain. We were unsure and parked quite a bit far away when we saw a parking spot. But there were many more that we saw while we walked up.

Beautiful castle with long history. Better to reserve tickets online in advance. Rather cold inside, so don't forget to wear smth warm. Picnics are forbidden inside and only small cafeteria is available. Near 2 hours needed for full visit. Enjoy 😉

This is very well preserved place. I spent around 2 hours, many sitting areas for quick rest in between rooms/ stops. Many beautiful place for photo taking, or just enjoy the architecture of the building. Free parking is available at roadside; toilet is clean and available near entrance.
Eyogurt — Google review
A beautiful castle, allows access with the car and you can enter it's yard for free, but of you want to go up the castle, you'd have to get a ticket and go up 300 stairs. We skipped the stairs as we were with a baby, but we didn't regret it - the view is breathtaking and the castle itself leaves you in awe. I was surprised we could access all the way into the castle with our baby stroller, we don't really feel comfortable with the baby carrier, so if you're looking for a castle that's easily accessible, this is a great place to visit. Also, there's a small café and gift shop before going up the castle and they have a great coffee with whipped cream on top. We highly recommend this one!

8t can get quite crowded here, but it's an impressive castle and worth visiting. We went by bike and did not have to spend time in traffic on the way up and looking for parking. If you can go without the car, I would recommend it.

A beautiful and interesting place to visit for both children and adults. Fantastic views to enjoy. There are a library and a restaurant available. Car park is free of charge, many car parking spaces available along the road but can be challenging to find a slot during the busy times. We loved the place. Thank you!

Very good castle on the great view spot. Unfortunately, not too many decorations were saved inside the castle. Also, due to many narrow paths inside and many people be prepared to wait for some time to walk around. Maybe letting people inside by small groups would solve the issue of chaotic movement

+ A big palace with a great collection of exhibits and rooms to view + Well maintained + Parking ( though the long weekend was not difficult to find a spot. Had to wait until someone moves out) + Price. Was bit high, but okish as well maintained and big

Up on the heights of Orschwiller, the outline of this imposing building can be seen from far across the plain. Visitors can't come to Alsace without paying a visit to one of its most popular monuments, which offers an outstanding view and in clear weather you can sometimes see the Alps. When visitors enter the Castle of Haut-Kœnigsbourg through its main gate, they embark on a journey back into the Middle Ages... Its courtyard, forge, mill, spiral staircases, drawbridges, arms room, keep and canons are constant reminders of the original purpose of this mountaintop fortress. Built in the 12th century, over the years it belonged to a series of illustrious owners. It was Emperor William II who decided to restore it. It was used as a film location for the film "La Grande Illusion", but also "Les aventures d'Arsène Lupin" by Jacques Becker, not to mention a number of scenes from the film "Agent trouble" by Jean-Pierre Mocky. Its unique atmosphere has fascinated many artists. Come along and discover the charm of this amazing Alsatian site for yourself... Nearby, visitors can also visit the Volerie des Aigles (Eagle Park) and the Montagne des Singes (Monkey Mountain). * Some photos courtesy of Internet. Thanks!

The castle is beautiful. It is well kept and maintained. There are a lot of interesting rooms to explore (kitchen, weapons, cannons, dining, .. ). The architecture is impressive and the view is great (make sure to come on a clear day). You can park for free near the entrance. A ticket costs 9€ per adult and 5€ for children above 6.

A beautiful place mostly from the outside. The inside is also interesting but can be visited in an hour. The views of the top towers are amazing though and certainly are worth checking out. There are many staircases so not a very easy to visit castle for older people or people with disabilities. And it's not expensive (7 euros for students.) Enjoy!
Amin Mansouri — Google review
Very cool castle but VERY crowded. Don’t be afraid to drive closer to the front to find parking. Everyone followed each other and parked way down the mountain but if you drive up closer to the entrance you’ll likely find a bunch of empty spots and won’t have to walk as far. Lots of history to read as you walk through. Beautiful views.

A wonderful monument you must visit during your stay in Alsace! It is one of the most complex castles ever rebuilt in the area and has the best panoramic views on the region below. The castle offers tours (included in your entry ticket) and we had a great time with our tour guide Jacques K. Very interesting person with so many interesting facts to talk about the castle!

Quite the nice visit here. We came on a chilly but sunny Sunday, and we loved discovering the castle and the view from there. Nice easy explanations along the way; it's made for kids, but in such a good way that it's really comprehensive and understandable for all. We didn't feel the need for the audioguide. Entrance was 7e, as a small part of the tower was not accessible when we visited. You can spend 1h30 inside easily, less if you rush a bit.

I liked this castle and can recommend visiting it. It has some interesting indoors and really cool outdoors. The view from the top of the castle is awesome. It costs 12€ per person. The parking area gets crowded so arrive early!

Wow wow wow 🤩 soooo amazing this castle was huuuugggeeeeee. The view from up top is amazing and you can get the castle too. What a great place. We also had some cakes/pies at the little restaurant there. The lemon meringue was super delicious! 🤤 highly recommend this castle it’s worth the 12€

Very nice to visit, impressive castle with super views of the surrounding area. No wait because we arrived on time in the morning (9:20, opened at 9:30), else I'd add some time waiting to get a ticket and also slower visit as it'll be more crowded inside.
Jean-Pierre Rasquin — Google review
Really nice Castle with different areas and different environments. The view is really beautiful since it is located in the top of a mountain. Easily accessible by car with plenty of places to park.

Well preserved Castle, if I am not wrong It was rebuilt. The heating system is amazing. It has some interesting rooms. I guess the views are amazing, we had a low cloud day.
Emma Sanchez — Google review
Great castle to visit! Easy to access (nice road leading up there!) and to park but you might have to walk a little bit until the entrance. The castle was beautifully renovated, the pink stones are very authentic and original. The visit is well organised, where you learn about the various historic periods. Even with foggy weather, you'll enjoy a fantastic view. Audioguides are available for 4.5€, but you also can opt for a free booklet which is also giving the necessary info along with the signs. Be aware, during week days they are closing entrance from 12:00 until 13:15

Marvelous castle! Worth visiting in any weather but up there it is windy. Parking is free, there is a parking lot and upward from it to the castle there are plenty of parking spaces. If you don’t find a place just go round and you will return to the mentioned lot.

Amazing castle atop of a mountain with great views. Kaiser Wilhelm II built on top of the older castle from 1900 to 1908. Nestled in the clouds and when it clears, views to the black forest. Nice tea room and restaurant.

Place du Bouc, also known as Goat Square, is a charming spot in the town of Ribeauville. It features a small stream that was historically used for washing clothes by local washerwomen until the mid-20th century. The square is flanked by narrow houses and the Grand Rue, creating a tranquil atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Visitors can admire the yellow corner half-timbered house from the Renaissance period with its unique architectural details.

Place de la Sinne is a charming triangular square located in Ribeauville, adorned with the stunning Frederick Fountain dating back to 1862. The fountain features a female figure symbolizing trade, agriculture, viticulture, and the local forests. Surrounded by picturesque houses, visitors can relax on benches and enjoy the tranquil ambiance of this lovely square. Often mistaken for another smaller fountain nearby, Place de la Sinne is known for its beauty and historical significance in the town.

(Translated by Google) Cozy triangular-shaped square with the largest and most beautiful fountain of all those spread throughout the town. On Maps it appears by mistake as the source of the Deer (du Cerf) but that is another smaller one located at the confluence of the Grand Rue and the Grand Rue de la Church. They call this the Friedrich fountain, in relation to the architect who created the figure above, or the Sinne because of its location. As it does not have much free space because it is occupied by large planters and parking, it is not used to set up the traditional Christmas stalls of the Nöel markets, leaving it a little outside the environment shown by the Grand Rue and other larger squares. Even so, it has beautiful buildings around it that are worth contemplating accompanied by the sound of water falling on the small waterwheels under each pipe.

Winstub La Flammerie is a lively and rustic restaurant located at the beginning of the Grand Rue, just a short walk from a large parking lot. It offers traditional German-influenced dishes such as pork knuckle, sauerkraut with sausage, and Munster cheese-based specialties. The quality of the food, service, and interior is highly praised by visitors.
Who knew sauerkraut with beer and wine sauce with ham knuckles could be so delicious! Come in hungry and order wine from House of Gustave Lorentz. We Canadians fully appreciated this authentic Alsace cuisine.

I wouldn't recommend this place in a million years because of the attitude of the lady. Maybe she was having a bad day. But it was sad for us. But the lady at the pizza place next door was very welcoming and we had great food and drinks there. I know these businesses don't care for people like us as these towns as very touristy. But someone has to give them the review they deserve.

Located in Ribeauville, Au Cheval Noir is a top choice for those seeking quality dining and delicious tarte flambee. The restaurant offers a diverse menu with efficient service and perfectly cooked dishes. Guests can enjoy spacious seating and professional, welcoming staff. The restaurant also offers great local wines to accompany the meal. Visitors appreciate the friendly locals and recommend trying the mouse au chocolat as well as the 24 menu, which offers a superb three-course meal at an excellent price.

Traditional alsacien food, wine and desserts. The Tarte Flambée is exceptionally good and it's possible to order half portions. They have a good variety of choucroute dishes and regional meat. The resto is very hot inside and doesn't have ventilation so be prepared...

Whenever we are in Ribauvillé we eat there. Very good traditional cuisine, all fresh, for a very good price. The place is popular. I recommend to reserve in advance!

A nice little unassuming restaurant in Ribeauville with the vineyards a stone's throw away. Decor simple and basic but clean and well maintained. Traditional Alsatian cuisine which has strong Germanic influence. The Coq au Reisling is the region's version of the famous Coq au Vin and it is indeed tasty. We also ordered the Tarte Flambee, another specialty of the region which was delicious and paired perfectly with the 2014 Fuch Henry Grand Cru Pinot Gris also from the region. The veal cordon bleu stuffed with Munster cheese and smoked ham was unfortunately not well executed and the meat was tough. What also brought the rating down for this establishment is the poor service. The serving staff were sullen and even downright rude spoiling what could have been a pleasant lunch.

We had a delicious dinner at 'Au Cheval Noir'. The restaurant is spacious and the tables are not cramped together, which is is very nice in these times. We had the Paysan potage (Farmers soup) which was delicious. My huisband had the 'Choucroute d'Alsace' (sauerkraut) and I had the 'Tarte flambée gratinée' (Flammkuchen). Both were very good. All this great food was accompanied with a great local Pinot Blanc. The menu is also available in German or English. We had a great time, thank you.

Au Cheval noir; aka the Black horse houses some of the kindest and most conditioned locals in the town. In addition and an outstanding mouse au chocolat. I myself (with 2 others) had the 24€ menu; a superb 3 course meal deal at a utterly fabulous price. They also cure their beef so perfectly that it has the texture of game meat. (in a good way.)
Jonathan Hannon — Google review
Ordered the chicken in riesling wine sauce with spätzel. The chicken was a drum, thigh. and wing (all dark meat) all dry. The wine sauce had flavor after some salt. The spätzel was burned and had no flavor/seasoning at all-not even butter.... I thought everything came with butter on it in France for goodness sakes. Bottom line not worth 20 euro. All three in our party ordered the same exact item and all agreed that the food was not worth the money. Sorry.........

We were here on a very busy Sunday lunchtime. The restaurant was fully booked and the staff were under some pressure. Despite that the service really was very efficient. What a show! The man working the tables was a showman for sure. Not much English but trying to figure out his games was entertaining. Large portions. My husband loved his meat pie. Small restaurant with man tables, def not Covid spaced inside. But they check everyone’s Covid pass. Allowed our dog to come in as well.

Food wasn't good. Bland and tasteless. Service was good until the waiter brought us 3 different invoices, only the last one was correct. I wouldn't return, unfortunately it was one of the few restaurants open as most of them are closed on wed + thu. Tourist trap

Portion sizes were pretty massive, so be prepared to eat a lot. The food quality was good and service was medium speed. Personally I did not like the food very much as there was a bit too much meat in the meat dishes. Prices were definitely pricey, but was offset by the large portion sizes and area (can't exactly get cheap food at a popular tourist town). For cost reference, most meat dishes were €19 +- €3 depending on the dish.

**bad experience with service and food** First, we sat and were the only customers and it started off good, the service was nice and we had a good wine. But after the entree came, things started going bad. The server asked us to pay for everything because she said she needed to leave and change service... but she never left, she continued to serve all evening. Then our plat of coq au vin delayed more than an hour to come and when it did, there was a larva worm thing crawling around in the pasta, we showed the server and she said "thats just nature" and put her hand in the plate to take it out then walked away... we just lost our appetite and couldn't enjoy the food anymore. The dessert of "homemade pie" came and was clearly a frozen pie that they heated up as some of the cherries still thawing and were stuck together. Avoid this place.

Nestled in a charming half-timbered building, Restaurant Caveau de l'ami Fritz offers a rustic and welcoming atmosphere with old wooden beams and superb service. The stone-vaulted restaurant serves excellent food, accompanied by an impressive wine selection. The hotel provides parking, making it convenient for travelers with vehicles like VW campervans. Guests are greeted with warmth and helpfulness, ensuring a delightful stay in the beautiful French town.
We quite enjoyed having dinner here. It was a pretty hot day but the garden was pretty enjoyable due to being shady. We tried the onion soup and it was pretty good, with plenty of cheese and about 400mills, so decent serving size. The "vintage" steak was great, i suspect that it was dry aged, however the sides were mediocre at best. Wait time was about an hour, maybe a bit more but its something I expect around here in late June. For me the prices seemed just right, not bad, not great. All in all decent experience.

It took some time to get a table because of the crowds visiting the Christmas Market but once inside everything went super fast. Great service and the portions were generous. The food was not amazing but good. I would go again.
Stefania Tanasescu — Google review
We went here for a late lunch on the 26th of December so it's nice that it was open and it's right in the center. However, the food was nit very good. The vegetable "steak" was just a fried burger patty that costs just a few euros but was priced at €20. It was not well made, and neither was the onion soup. The onion quiche was tasty. The older waitress was not friendly but the younger one was nice. The bathroom was difficult to find and there was only cold water. Overall, it did the job, but I would not recommend going there of you have other options.

Do NOT go! This place has the rudest service I have ever experienced in over 35 countries. Not only they were more than 1 hour late with our food, they didn’t even come to take our drinks order. I had to go to the bar and ask for a drink myself. At that point the waitress comes out and starts yelling saying that we should be grateful they welcomed us to their establishment. This was followed by a manager yelling at us! The food came out cold and tasteless! They have a 3 star rating based on over 1600 reviews. Listen to the crowds and save yourself the yelling!

Caveau de l'ami Fritzz - A Culinary Gem I recently had the pleasure of dining at Caveau de l'ami Fritzz, and I can confidently say that it deserves every one of its five stars. From the moment I stepped into the cozy and welcoming ambiance, I knew I was in for a treat. The menu at Caveau de l'ami Fritzz is a culinary delight. Every dish is crafted with precision and passion, showcasing the finest ingredients and flavors. From the tender and succulent Alsatian Choucroute to the mouthwatering Escargots de Bourgogne, each bite was a taste of gastronomic perfection. The service was impeccable, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who guided me through the menu and made excellent recommendations. They were friendly, accommodating, and truly added to the overall dining experience. The wine selection was impressive, featuring a variety of local and international options that perfectly complemented the exquisite flavors of the cuisine. The sommelier's expertise was evident, and the wine pairing enhanced the enjoyment of each course. The attention to detail in every aspect of Caveau de l'ami Fritzz is commendable. The presentation of the dishes was artful, and the flavors were harmonious and balanced. The restaurant's commitment to providing an exceptional dining experience was evident in every aspect of my visit. In conclusion, Caveau de l'ami Fritzz is a culinary gem that should not be missed. With its outstanding cuisine, impeccable service, and charming ambiance, it offers a dining experience that is truly unforgettable. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this restaurant is a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates the art of fine dining.

very rude service. I have no opinion about the restaurant's food, because when I went with my family in, to ask if there is a table available, a lady forcefully threw us out without even listening to what we wanted to ask her. and he also put a "ribbon" on the door so we wouldn't go in again. (The funny thing was that at that moment they also wanted customers to come out and with the ribbon they couldn't). And I don't understand why this was done, as the restaurant's website says that the restaurant is open from 08:00 - 22:00. (we went around 15:00). Unfortunately we left with a very bad experience from this place for no particular reason. Disappointment...

Waiting to get seated, then left standing near a table that was still coupled with another table were people were already seated. Waitress just left and let us stand there. Entire dinner took about 3 hours but we only ordered a couple of dishes. Food: recycled bread, we had an odd shaped piece of bread left with the starter, that piece returned to our table with main course. Food was ok but nothing special. One male waiter very friendly, the others just ignore you.

Pretty bad experience overall. People waiting around not knowing whether to sit or wait, staff running around aimlessly, looking confused. Food was very subpar, drinks were OK-ish. The waiter had an attention span of a goldfish on speed so ordering, asking for extra water and paying were all quite challenging. One of the very few places where we didn't feel like leaving a tip at all.

Our group had an unpleasant encounter at Restaurant Caveau de l'ami Fritz. The old lady managing the restaurant was not only impolite but also displayed a lack of respect. Despite our attempts to order politely, she responded with anger and rudeness. It's unfortunate that such behavior overshadowed what could have been a enjoyable dining experience. If you have respect yourself, try other places.

Our experience at Restaurant Caveau de l'ami Fritz was disappointing. The old lady in charge was extremely rude, and when we tried to arrange a table, she treated us with disrespect, even took us out to wait by touching us inappropriately. This behavior continued as we waited for service, and when we expressed our readiness to order, she responded angrily. We left due to her unacceptable behavior. There are many other better alternatives around. If you don't want to be threated rude, try other places.

Sadly, our visit to Restaurant Caveau de l'ami Fritz was marred by the rude behavior of the elderly lady in charge. From the moment we entered, she treated us with hostility, making us feel unwelcome. Her actions and impoliteness reached a point where we decided to leave. It's a place to avoid if you're looking for a pleasant dining experience.

We asked for a table for 6 persons. We were told to wait for 2 minutes. After 10 minutes the waiter came and guided us to a remote room with no other guests. Their entrecote was horrible and not prepared as agreed. The waiter did not come to our remote location until long after we finishdd our meal. They offered a refund and the amount was frankly rideculous. We will never return.

Regrettably, our visit to Restaurant Caveau de l'ami Fritz was overshadowed by the discourteous behavior of the elderly lady running the establishment. Her rudeness extended from our initial interaction to our attempts to place an order. This, coupled with her apparent lack of respect for customers, led us to leave the restaurant. We advise others to explore alternative dining options in the area.

Le Giersberg is a well-established restaurant offering both indoor and outdoor seating. While the decor may be considered average, the establishment is known for its friendly service and cozy atmosphere. The menu features a variety of dishes, with some patrons praising the quality of the food, particularly highlighting the strawberry starter drink and burgers. However, there are mixed reviews regarding the famous Alsatian dish. Overall, it's a popular spot with generally good food and a pleasant ambiance.
Really cozy atmosphere, liked it really much.. burgers are good too!!

Again, a really friendly waitress who serves us with weak English. The food was really good, as was the strawberry starter drink.

I mean, it’s a strong NO! Unfriendly personnel! And that should be enough, but the amount of food for that price is outrageous. The red wine just terrible. I won’t continue, because I will end up at the bathroom that has no toilet paper and when they hear you speak English and you are having a hard time deciding what to order, they get mad and storm away from the table. So…

This was the only place where we got served food at 15:00. We were the only at the place, but the service was still slow. We didn't get any attention, i had to stand up so that we could order. The food was ok. Price is also ok for the area.

An old, highly rated restaurant. Outside and inside places. The decor is average, unfortunately. The food is quite good, although in general I was disappointed with the most famous Alsatian dish, but not only here, but in general. Nice service. Toilet for men tiny.
