Sights & Landmarks
The building of the Santa Maria de los Reyes church began in the late 12th century in Romanesque design but was not completed until the 15th century, resulting in a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features due to subsequent renovations. The most notable feature is its polychrome portico made of carved stone from the 14th century, decorated with human figures intertwined with plant motifs which were added during a refurbishment in the 17th century.
The construction of the church of Santa María de los Reyes, located in the North of Laguardia, began at the end of the 12th century in Romanesque style. However, the sanctuary was finished in the 15th century, which due to the restorations made from then on, explains its Gothic, Renaissance and even Baroque features. The polychrome portico is the sanctuary's most outstanding characteristic. Its construction, in carved stone, dates back to the 14th century but it was polychromed in the 17th century with details showing human forms mingled with vegetal motifs. The main altarpiece was made by Juan de Bascardó in the 17th century, in Renaissance style, but tending towards the Baroque.
Karol Karolkiewicz — Google review
Impressive 12th century Romanesque and later added Renaissance architecture. Beautifully preserved portico sculpture work telling the biblical story of Santa Maria's life. The lack of English language tour availability was a drawback, but they do have written English interpretive sheets. But the introductory light show & narration loses a lot when you can't understand the language. Ensure you inquire at the tourism office about times for the tour in your preferred language.
Jan Douglas — Google review
Need to buy ticket for guided tour to be able to see it. They have no English language tour but they provided us with a printed copy of the explanation. Guide was very helpful. It takes your breathe away when the doors open
Cat Li — Google review
A hidden gem not to be missed in Laguardia. The polychrome portico is simply stunning. The fact that it has always been sheltered has helped preserve the sculptures and the colours intact so it looks pretty much like it did four centuries ago. Check visit hours since you must get your ticket in advance (on the same day) at the tourism office.

At the far end of this little town you will find the absolutely amazing church......even if you have seen hundreds of old European churches, you need to see this one. I'm not an architect, nor a builder, but, I can appreciate amazing structures. The portico is breath-taking".......see the rest for yourself.....

Winery
Bodega El Fabulista is a historic winery located in Laguardia, within the walls of one of the largest caves in the area. The winery offers guided tours and wine tastings, providing visitors with an immersive experience into the winemaking process. Visitors can explore the caves and tunnels, learn about different types of wood barrels, bottling processes, and quality testing.
We did the winery tour in English and the guide was great, very informative and kind. The facility itself is small but packed full of interesting history! As with most of Laguardia, there are tunnels below the building where they age the wine. We did our tasting in the tunnels, which was really fun. We had a 10 year old with us and she enjoyed the tour too!

Great and different wine process it's interesting and very good to see how they do the same since a long time. Book the tour even with kids they will get at least some good grape juice

If you like wine this place is a must to visit. Excellent atmosphere and proffessional workers who gave an interesting history lesson about this place, the town and ofcourse about wine. As I dont like wine normally I was very sceptical at first but I now understand that there is a big difference between different wine. The tunnels were amazing aswell!

We enjoyed our tour with Antonio. We had a small group in our tour and it was a great personalized experience. Not being wine experts, the tour was still very informative.

We did a guided tour and wine tasting of the El Fabulista winery in Laguardia. Our guide was Antonio. He took us through the whole process of how the wines are made in this historic winery in the old town. He showed us all the caves and tunnels, explained the different types of wood barrels and what they are for, how the wines are bottled and tested for quality, and so much more. In the end we got to taste 4 wines in the beautiful cellar and had some Spanish cheese and chorizo to accompany the experience. We would highly recommend this tour with Antonio. Good value for money and a wonderful place to visit. We treated ourselves to 2 bottles from their shop in the end.

I don’t care how many recommendations there are this place was unprofessional. My wife walked in at 532pm for a 530 tour. We were the only ones scheduled and the host Raquel said “no tour. You were late. Only tasting” She did not say one word to us except that we were late and she would not give a tour. It was a Wednesday at 530pm. She tried to pour the wine into dirty glasses until I protested. She had to smell each bottle of wine and realized it was no good and had to open 2 other bottles! So she wasn’t even ready for any tastings! Dirty glasses, sour wine. After pouring the sour tasting wine she walked away and huffed at the desk (we were the only people there). Did not want to talk about the wine, winery, processing - nothing. Pouted like a child. We did not drink the wine - we each had 3 to taste - not our style, paid and left. I don’t think we stepped 3 feet out the door and she locked up. And we weren’t the only ones she was rude to - a group walked in right after my wife for a tasting (spanish speaking trio) and she told them in no uncertain terms that they could not have a tasting!! Strongly advise anyone to not consider this place. It was highly recommended by several wineries and our hotel. Poor service, poor hosts, poor wine. If you want to read a dirty erotic story they have plenty of their “erotic tales” books to share!
Ed Beran — Google review
My husband and I absolutely loved this tour! We did about 3 wine tours around La Rioja and I think this one was my favorite one. Francesca the tour guide was just fabulous! Her vibrant energy just made the tour so enjoyable. This tour seemed more personal and I felt comfortable asking her all of my questions. I also enjoyed the wine and the tapas that came with the tasting. I loved that we were able to taste the wine underground in the caves. Book this tour you won’t regret it!

Excursión is interesting! But wine is very mediocre((( for Degustation young wine (4€ bottle). Crianza ok 👌 . Visit is 15€ per person. Don’t forget to take jacket 🧥 for wine cellar, very cold
Nadia Rozumna — Google review
Nice location of winery, unfortunately I was not able to get tour. So tried couple of wines per glass.

We were a group of 32 people and Antonio took us on a great journey at the bodega. It was very informative, curious and very enjoyable. Antonio was great and full of good stories to share. The wine is very special and unique, we all bought their wines. A visit to remember and to enjoy with a glass in the hand!

Bodegas Ysios, located at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains near Laguardia, is a winery known for its stunning wave-like design created by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. The building serves as a temple dedicated to wine and perfectly blends into the surrounding landscape. Visitors can enjoy cellar and barrel-room tours, as well as wine sampling while taking in the breathtaking architecture. Reservations are recommended due to limited capacity for small groups.
Ysios is a beautiful winery worth the visit to experience the landscape and architecture. The wine flight was very good, and we basically had the tasting room upstairs to ourselves with a nice view out front looking towards Laguardia.
Michael Emrey — Google review
Wow, this is amazing winery! I highly recommend booking tour if you’re spending time in Rioja. It’s ~20 min, easy drive from city center. The winery’s mission, architectural design (inside & outside), surrounding vineyards, delicious wines and extremely knowledgeable staff all added to the experience. Joana was an absolute delight! She was well versed in terroir, wine-making process and of course their wines. I’ve been to many wineries in various countries but Joana provided visual and verbal descriptions of the wines mouthfeel that really resonated. We tasted Avant-Garde, Seleccion, Blanco which were all well balanced, great wines and most aren’t offered in U.S., so a real treat!
Adriane O'Brien — Google review
Enjoyable guided visit of an impressive building in a beautiful setting. The tasting was especially informative, and the guide explained both the wine production process and the details about each wine in excellent English. It was a shame we could only see the barrel room, presumably due to COVID restrictions, but the setting for the tasting was beautiful. We tasted 2 delicious wines accompanied by jamon. It is necessary to make a reservation for a guided tour.
Lyndsay Buckingham — Google review
We visited this winery both for the wine and the breath-taking architecture. We made a reservation online but we were not able to get reservations for two people. They were sold out and just one of us were able to do a wine tasting. We ended up buying their white wine which we thought was better than their red. The building by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava blends really well with its surroundings.

After driving past this place on several trips, I finally made a visit. Wow! First, the architecture is spectacular, designed to draw you into the facility. There you are greeted by friend and multi-lingual staff. A flight of six wines was tasted. The woman who poured the wine explained each and every one, complete with all the details and more information for the discerning wine enthusiast. Also, such a cheerful person! Then, upstairs to a magnificent room that is like a cathedral with a view over the entrance and vineyards, or to the other side, where barrels are aging. Relax, enjoy the wine with a little snack at a very fair price. I wish I had stopped in every time. I will return and enjoy more often.

This winery is absolutely beautiful. You can come for a tour or simply have a selection of wine in the main dining hall. I will definitely add this to your list of places to visit.

A visit to Ysios Winery is a must, especially if you are lucky enough to travel around Logrono and the southern part of Spain. Very close to Bilbao too, this winery is something out of a sci-fi fairytale. The architecture behind the building is unique. Santiago Calatrava created a unique building that is out of this world and each corner is a secret design study. This place will stay forever in your memories. And then there is the amazing wine excellency found in Ysios. Unique, sustainable wine making in small batches for amazing taste and perfect wines. The tour of the grounds with tasting at the end is amazing. Our tour guide Amaya was passionate and full of interesting information about the grounds and the secrets of wine making. She made our tour an 11/10! You have to see this place and experience the tour.
Loukas Mexis — Google review
Great architecture. Amazing location. Unfriendly winery. Cold welcome. Looks like they don’t need customers.
Ralph de Wargny — Google review
Wonderful wine tasting experience. The architecture is stunning especially contrasted against the mountainous backdrop and compared to other vineyards close by. We went on the “Fine Wines” tasting. It lasted 1.5 hours and had a total of 11 guests, so it was an intimately sized group. Our guide was amazing. She was engaging, knowledgeable, warm and very friendly. She’s been working at the vineyard for 18 years and explained in great detail the vineyards’ unique architecture, the meaning of their name “Ysios”, the different types of grapes grown on their vineyards, the wine making process and more. We tasted a total of 5 wines (1 white, 4 red), which were paired with crackers, cheese, cold cuts and their own chocolate. Highly recommend this experience. We will definitely come back the next time we’re in rioja.

very interesting design at this winery. they had several tasting options and included a plate of sausage at no charge. Wines are very pricey for the region.

The winery is one of the most attreactive from the outside. Stunning architecture with the mountains at the back. The inner hall is also attractive and wines good. I didnt have time for a tour, but it is worth to see at least the exterior.

This winery is a must to visit in Rioja. The architecture is amazing, the wines are stunning too. 5 stars for the guided and tasting tour.
Grégory Giroud — Google review
Top-notch winery! This is a mix of history/tradition and innovation. The architecture was perfectly designed by Santiago Calatrava and it’s insane with a mixture of curvy design and fully open space to help the wine maxing. The curvy roof and the inside without any beams, it really shows the essence of this place. A must to do in this area!
Giuseppe Laudadio — Google review
The main structure designed by Calatrava is unreal, especially with the mountains as a backdrop. It was absolutely beautiful! The wine-tasting and vineyard tour was great. They keep the tour group small-ish so it feels more personal. The guide went into such great detail explaining the production philosophy of the vineyard and the process they follow. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Kathy Buenaventura — Google review
I loved the visit and the tasting! The tour guide was fantastic, she explained everything crystal clear and provided a lot of interesting info and details. Loved the history of the name and the egyptian influence. The place is gorgeous and spacious, perfect to walk around and take pictures. Not busy at all. We walked from Laguardia through wineyards on both sides of the road, very beautiful walk. The tasting was really good and the ham provided was of good quality. For the price, a third wine could have been served to try, like other wineries do. I give it 4 stars because the pricing of the wine being so high. I understand is small batch designer wine but would have been a good idea to provide smaller bottles for sale to take some home. Definitely recommended!
Alba González Hernando — Google review
Beautiful winery with breathtaking views. Definitely a must-visit to take pictures against the stunning back drop of the winery and the mountains. The architecture is something to be appreciated. However, the wines are very mediocre and pricey. The price tag certainly doesn't align with the quality of wines. The wine tasting flight is 30 euros for not-so-delicious wines, and you enjoy it in a really dark space where they age their wines in the barrels. It sounds like a great idea, but it's so dark, and the echo can be annoying. Pro tip, I recommend that you go there to take nice pictures on the outside, and enjoy nicer wines and more reasonable prices at the tasting room just across the street and take even nicer pictures with this building at a distance.
Ivan Loh — Google review
We stopped because of the stunning architecture - the wines were just as stunning! The service was impeccable, Joanna provided a thorough introduction to the winery and wines. We then enjoyed a flight of wines accompanied by tapas in their cellars/caves. One of the best bodega experiences we had in Rioja.
Helen Davidson — Google review
During my time in Rioja, had the opportunity to visit Ysios for a guided tour. My suggestion is to plan your visit ahead. The location is stunning, the beautiful landscape blends to this modern architecture and adds quality to this brands story. Highly suggest visiting if you’re a wine connoisseur.

Fantastic and highly recommended experience. World class architecture is stunning, and our guide was very engaging. They are experimenting with wines, so the prices are also experimental, if you want to bring some bottles home.

Casa Primicia is a historic winery located in the beautiful village of Laguardia, Rioja. Legend has it that King Sancho Abarca of Navarra recognized the strategic importance of the hill where it stands and founded La Guardia de Navarra on its top. The bodega is situated inside the old city walls and offers impressive views.
What a fun experience and delicious wine tasting! We enjoyed learning the history about the winery and it’s beginnings and connection to the local area. The tour and tour guide were very insightful. The wines were delicious and offered an exceptional value. This would be our top pick to visit and order from in the future. Thank you!

Fantastic historical bodega with impressive views. This place is a must-see. We did the tour in English; Fabiola, our guide, was exceptional. The bodega is located inside the old city walls, and is steeped in history. Casa Primicia goes beyond the typical tasting tour experience in that it delves into the history of the area, the building, and the legacy of those who produced wine in it throughout the centuries. It was a fascinating tour, in a beautifully preserved centuries-old bodega, with great wine. The views from the upper level showcase impressive panoramas of the picturesque Spanish countryside.

(Translated by Google) Guided tour of the Casa Primicia winery. Very interesting to know the oldest winery in La Guardia, in addition to the history of the building and how it was produced and what the wine was made for before. Then we enjoyed the tasting of two house wines that were good, but I don't have much experience in the world of wines and I haven't enjoyed it much either. They give you some bread rolls with oil to taste among the wines for a little while, the oil doesn't go well with that bread, they should change it to make it more attractive. Since the oil is also advertising that they sell. The wines were very delicious and they explained the nuances of each one, which my inept taste buds didn't catch.

We took a day trip around La Rioja! We decided to jump off the bus in Laguardia but our feet were tired from walking so we want to find somewhere to relax. We happened upon Villa Lucia where we tried wines, enjoyed the beautiful patio, and decided to have a guided tour of the museum. The staff at the wine bar and the museum were so kind and informative! The guided museum tour was incredible! And the 4D movie experience at the end was our favorite. Then we enjoyed some croquettas and more wine and bought a few bottles to take home! Loved this place!

Wonderful place with a beautiful landscape of the Rioja countryside. Villa with gardens where the kids can enjoy. Awesome restaurant, croquettes, artichokes and chistorra are a must as starters, as main dishes hake or cooked lamb are a must. For sure all must be enjoyed together with some Rioja wines from the wide cellar the villa has.

Apparently a hot spot for those who know. We arrived at 13.00 and were wondering if that place actually served food, but by 15.00 it was packed. Food of great quality in generous quantities. The Season set menu is definitely value for money as it includes water, wine and bread, apart from the three course meal. We loved the Foie with apple cream, the Risotto, the carpaccio and Goxua (local dessert with caramel). The service is very friendly and the ambience very cozy. Strongly recommended

The Service was really friendly and helpful, but the food was even below average. I am sorry to say it that harshly, but none of the foods we ordered were really well spiced. Even something really simple like the grilled vegetables - which in Spain usually is a delight as an appetizer - tasted bland and boring. The seating is nice on a large terrace, but the rest was a disappointment.

The restaurant has impressive views of the Ysios winery, and to the other side, a very pleasant garden in which they sometimes set up a pergola. The interior is very neat, with very nice decoration. The best thing about this place is how good the food is: they have a very well-priced menu, with great variety and very good options. When we went, Esteban served us, a great professional, so when we returned we asked for him to serve us. Always attentive to all our requests. I highly recommend this place.

Espectacular. (Translated by Google) Spectacular. Their food is incredible and very good value for money. We are from Madrid, and having this gastronomic experience has been a pleasure. Wonderful treatment and kindness. I can't eat fish and they adapted to my needs. We have been for Valentine's Day, and we will recommend it to our friends if they decide to visit the area.

We are in Rioja for the weekend and my wife booked a table at this restaurant to try the tasting menu for lunch. We recognised it was good value for money and our expectations weren’t high. It was just convenient for us. I think it’s fair to say that the staff are great, and that the chief obviously tried hard with the food, couldn’t fault the presentation. However the fish wasn’t cooked well at all. My wife was having the pescatarian menu and was served cod twice (which we thought was a bit boring - but we didn’t complain). Once she enjoyed it but another time it was very dry and she didn’t eat it. The one time I was served cod it was still raw in the middle. Needless to say I left it. The octopus also needed further cooking as it was tough - not tender in the slightest. The starter and the chocolate desert were the highlights for sure. Just a shame about the main courses. I would say come here if you are on a budget and go for a la carte. I unfortunately can not recommend the tasting menu.

This restaurant is set in a beautiful location surrounded by mountains and vineyards. We stopped in for Monday lunch and enjoyed the set menu consisting of appetizer, main course and dessert with wine included for €11 per person. The appetizer of artichokes with ham was full of flavor, as was the paella. Please take note the servings are enormous. Grilled steak was perfectly cooked medium and the french fries were tasty. Hamburger, Milanese, and ham steak all uniformly delicious. The service was pleasant and prompt. Wait staff were very understanding with regard to our broken Spanish. The restrooms are also clean and well outfitted with plenty of toilet paper. Nothing at all wrong with this place; you will surely enjoy.

Very nice place especially after visiting many "bodegas". The quality and service is excellent! The staff is very professional and make you feel cosy and comfortable in restaurant while ordering and eating the meals! The price of menu del dia is 15eur which is great! Quality of food excellent!

(Translated by Google) Beautiful restaurant in an equally beautiful town. We went on a Monday in August to visit the town. We ate from the menu and it was a spectacle. Pochas and then rib. Unbeatable quality-price because in addition to drinking they serve you a bottle of wine that, being the Rioja from Alavesa, was worth every drop. Regarding the service, the waiter who served us was incredible, there was also no problem with the dogs and they were treated really well, which is why I recommend a visit to the town and this restaurant.

(Translated by Google) Spectacular service, true professionals in the sector. The food is very rich and quality. Order the cheesecake for dessert if you can. Brutal! The only thing I give it a 2 is the environment because I didn't understand the need to use live betta fish as decorations on the tables in a glass of water where they don't even have space to move and where they are clearly not happy. These Asian fish can live up to 5 years. But I'm sure that in such conditions they don't last even a year. Poor little animals. The vases with flowers, without the little fish, would do the same decorative function of the place in my opinion. (Translated by Google) Good menu for €31 with wine and dessert included. In addition, they let you choose a superior bottle of wine by paying the difference, which is appreciated. The croquettes to share were undercooked and tasted a lot like flour. The roasted peppers were spectacular, despite being microwaved. The risotto was perfect. The cheeks were good, although the spinach crepes and the bull ragout were much better. Regarding the desserts, the rice pudding was quite tasteless, while the torrija was good. In general terms, a good place to eat on the menu.

The music that sets the mood for the pleasant colcal, boleros with an adequate volume, in doubt whether to eat or dance. The service is 10, super friendly and attentive waiter at all times. Lastly, the food, a stir-fry of vegetables that tasted like vegetables, tender lamb chops with a flavor that I hadn't remembered in a long time, the desserts rice pudding and baked cheesecake, I'll choose the cake, we'll be back! (Translated by Google) Very badly. We went to the restaurant since some friends knew it from a few years ago and it was terrible. We ordered the Easter menu at a not inconsiderable price (36 euros) and the quantities of the starters and dessert bordered on the absurd. The main course, although small, was also a little better. The embarrassing dessert, we ordered torrija and they brought us half a torrija each and a teaspoon of ice cream. We certainly will not return nor recommend it. I think the prices are pretty good to offer an adequate amount of food. (Original) Muy mal.
