Not a long hike from the village, but it is very steep and slippery in the sommer with dry plants and stones. At your own risk to get to the castle. But a beautiful view at the top and to see an old building like that make the atmosphere really special.

Specialty Museums
The museum Musée-Bibliothèque François Pétrarque is named after Francesco Petrarca, also known as Petrarque. He sought refuge in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse after a romantic rejection. Petrarque is recognized as one of the early influential authors of Italian literature. The museum boasts a beautiful location by the water and offers a charming atmosphere to visitors. It is advisable to carefully read and follow the rules displayed on signs to avoid any negative consequences.
(Translated by Google) Very nice walk to take along the Sorgue starting from the museum (Original) Très belle balade à faire le long de la Sorgue en partant du musée
Bertrand Jonquois — Google review
The visit to the museum was very interesting. It can be carried out with the support of a practical audio guide and a small "map" on which the various contributions (with attached number) for each floor of the building are enumerated. Anyway, all the details you may need are kindly provided by the lady working at the front desk. The ground floor is dedicated to the René Char and the big names of contemporary art. On the first floor visitors can enjoy a collection of portraits of Francesco Petrarca and his beloved Laura, along with a series of old editions and prints, from the 15th to the 19th century, of the poet's work (Canzoniere, Trionfi, etc). Many drawings and engravings restore the ancient image of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a place of inspiration for Petrarca who rightly praised its “chiare, fresche et dolci acque”.😊 Only flaw: the temporary inaccessibility to the garden. In all together, highly recommended.😊

(Translated by Google) The museum was closed but the park is very pleasant, one of the only places where we could picnic but unfortunately it is prohibited. The guard-Cerberus attacked us and called us delinquents by shouting at us! when we told him that we wouldn't leave anything on the floor, that it was just sandwiches, but he replied even more sharply that he was tired of emptying the trash!! This guard should not be in contact with the public. So go to this park yes for its bucolic side but if you meet the guard, run away! Abbey
Sights & Landmarks
Abbey Notre-Dame de Sénanque is a 12th-century Cistercian monastery that offers guided tours of its church and cloisters. The abbey is located about 3 miles from the center of Gordes and has stunning lavender fields that provide a classic postcard shot during July and August. Visitors can explore the grounds on their own for an hour in the morning or join a guided tour to visit the interior at other times.
This small 12th century monastery is a fifteen minute drive from Gordes. It's an active monastery with six monks. You can go on a guided tour in French or opt for the self guided tour for which you'll get a tablet in multiple languages. The tablet tour is excellent: you can switch back and forth between the present and the past. You can learn a lot about life in a monastery. It takes around 30—60 min to complete the tour. The extensive gift shop sells products made by this and other monasteries. Especially the lavender honey is recommendable.
Beat A. Schwendimann — Google review
I went to see this Abbey for the second time. This time I went in early October. I knew the lavender would not be in bloom but I wanted to see it again anyway. I was not disappointed. The rows of once purple lavender still had a slight blue hue. They lead the eye like arrows to the newly washed stones of the Abbey. Once grayed by time, these stones are now a warm yellow. We were able to go inside, but it was Sunday and the monks were celebrating privately so we didn't get the tour. We walked around outside toward the back of the Abbey. The grounds are littered with big trees and brush. You can spot the bright white statue of Mary up the hill peeking between the branches. It is definitely worth a visit in any season, but if you can, it is best to time it when the lavender is blooming in June.
Kim Weissenborn — Google review
A beautiful, picturesque Abbey, steeped in serenity. I visited the Abbey in April, with all countryside in bloom and green. The historical value of the Abbey dates back centuries, and it’s wonderful to walk around the different sections and learn about it. There is a hiking path connecting the Abbey with Gordes village, if anyone is interested. There is lavender planted in all surroundings, making the place unique.
Kyriaki Andreou — Google review
Went with my family for a nice walk and self tour inside with totally new way of guidance. Fair fee and pad with video tour software showing the past and present days. Also the shop with all kind of staff will just amazed me. Lavender bee honey is just one of my favorite and this one is worth every penny.
Luka Mitrovic — Google review
Very unique place, loved the serenity. Dogs are not allowed close to the monastery. You can however walk around it with them. Going inside there is a lovely shop with lots of regional products. Is a nice stop to combine with other places in the area. We spend around 1.5 here (but we went inside separate because of the dog)
Roxanne Overeem — Google review
Awesome ride! And awesome place, the smell here was lovely. We walked around for an hour and continued our journey. There was a very long waiting line for the abbey, so we end up not going there. The pictures of the place also didn’t seem too beautiful as well. And entree is also not free.
Lex O — Google review
A great place outdoor is the best to take some pictures and smell lavanda fields perfume. Indoor is less impressive but still worth a visit if you have never visited a 12th century abbey. Last time I was there was in summer 2017 but I am pretty sure nothing changes in a place like this, where time has literally stopped. You can book a guided tour if you want to. THis is a 4 star review as I enjoyed Gordes site more.
Cyril BECKER — Google review
Very pretty stop to see the Abbey. It has a tour with a screen to scan in order to get more information about the life and times of the monks living here. Silence is necessary when walking around. However the drive here can be a little tricky so be careful making your way here.
Jo Oy — Google review
the drive there offered a beautiful view of the surrounding nature. the lavender fields were colorful and not too crowded and parking there was pretty easy too. We took some pictures and visited the small shop that offers a variety of good quality lavender-themed and provence items without being too tourist-y.
Sven Ulmerich — Google review
Such a beautiful place, but it deserves so much more. Our guide seemed to be totally bored by his job, acoustic was terrible and the church was a messy construction site. To be honest, I was really disappointed as I still had such wonderful memory from this beautiful place from long ago when amazing Maronite music could be heard throughout the building which added to the magic. Sénanque definitely still is worth a visit but the tour felt soulless.
Claire J. — Google review
Beautiful lavender fields that just take your breath away. The history is incredible. Don’t miss out on the gift shop, because the prices are reasonable.
Hilda DeHoyos Garza — Google review
Great day trip to go see this. The roads are a bit narrow but that’s normal for this area in France. It was Good Friday when we went so the shop was closed and the lavender was not in season yet, but still worth a trip if you’re looking for something to do and still good for some pics
William van Zyl — Google review
beauty and knowledge are two things you will take away from this amazing senanque. I can’t wait to return when the lavender is in bloom in the summer. I visited in mid October and the weather was perfect. the interactive pads they gave you to visit through the senanque is top-tear I live in NY and this was better than the museums there. So informative about how the Monks have lived and continue to live in this beautiful Senanque. The shop is incredible and a lot of their product is sourced from the grounds! The experience will take about an hour or hour and a half. The architecture of this place is stunning. Just a 10/10 and so well priced, tickets are cheap and the gift shop is reasonable. A true Gem and beautiful experience.
Anna Maria Giannaros — Google review
Interesting but not too much of it is original. Worth doing if you’re passing by but I wouldn’t travel too far specifically to see it. I’d like to see it when the Lavender is in bloom.
David Skeoch — Google review
Secluded monastery in the middle of nowhere. It's near Gordes but you need to go a bit further. Parking space is a lot and not too pack with people. The lavender bloom when we were there and the smell and visual were really soothing. There is a shop selling lavender stuff which I love! Nice to visit place.
Ellen Brigitta — Google review
A beautiful Abbaye best to visit in July to see the beautiful lavender fields surrounding the abbaye. Come early to avoid crowd
Philippe Quentin — Google review
This is an incredible place to visit during lavander season. The visit will take up to 1 hour, and with the ticket fee you get and audio guide that aims to explain the history of the place. The place is crowded with tourists so it would be wise to visit early in the morning. Definitely pay a visit to the nearby town of Gordes once you are there.
Francesco Libardoni — Google review
We walked here from Gordes which was well worth the trip (but wear proper walking boots as the path is loose rock and extremely uneven). In March, which still seems to be the low season, this astonishing building was serenely peaceful and tranquil – especially the cloister. I felt so grateful to the monks for inviting the public into their dwelling. Recommend visiting out of season to really get a sense of what life must have been like here for centuries.

On the given date, the pleasant room and attentive staff at La Figuiere Fontaine de Vaucluse were greatly appreciated. The restaurant offered a delightful dining experience and was conveniently located near the fountain. The owner was very friendly. Today, we enjoyed a delightful lunch in their charming, serene courtyard. Instead of trying their famous salad figieure, we opted for a main course variation which consisted of well-dressed lettuce leaves, smoked duck and ham, as well as fig relish.
Absolutely superb food in this restaurant. Blown away by it actually! I'm vegetarian, there was choice on the menu and the meal I had was imaginative and full of flavour and variety. My companion loved this place too. Just beautiful food, beautifully presented. Thank you!

Very VERY slow service and mediocre food. We chose this restaurant based on the reviews here, and we are completely disappointed. The food is bland and not in the least interesting. The lamb is absolutely dry, the pork is dry and bland. I don’t recommend it. Not one good dish for our whole group. We have been just sitting here for so long and waiting for each unremarkable course. My kids, who usually love desert and get it everywhere, didn’t even want to wait for it. All of us just wanted to leave as soon as possible. One to the most disappointing dining experiences in a long while.

Restaurant Philip is located in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and offers delicious French cuisine with a riverside view. The restaurant is known for its perfect dishes made with fresh ingredients, such as Spring asparagus and freshly cooked trout. Despite being a bit pricey, the value is worth it for the quality of food and good service. The riverside deck provides a scenic spot to dine while watching the activities of ducks on the river.
We had a lovely meal with our children at the head of the river. The children’s menu was perfect to keep them entertained with good food, while my wife and I ordered five course meals. The location cannot been beaten, and the fact that the food was wonderful made for a first class experience. If you bring kids and they get bored, they can feed the ducks extra bread that you are given.

Delicious and magic Excellent menus, perfect when heatwave comes and 30° are reached! Natural air conditioning with river. Dishes are nice, fresh and nicely cooked. If you don't have time to lunch, enjoy the terrasse with the yellow chairs, by the river freshness, under the centennial trees, with ice creams or soda, and the most beautiful view available from gentlemen toilets. It is one of those perfect small jewel of a restaurant, with simplicity, that keeps on going for generations and wonderful ever. I keep going back there every year since 201x! If you are looking to lunch in the area after the long hike up the hills, this is the place. The restaurant with the best view, good food, and location. Have to walk a bit in order to get there, but totally worth it. The restaurant is under lots of trees and provides lots of shades. When we were there, the temperature was nearly 37C. If you like Spring asparagus and freshly cooked trout, as we do, then I recommend this restaurant highly — both were perfect 👏. We were welcomed and placed at a table of our choice. The meal is not extraordinary, burger and pizza. Rated 15/20. On account we were disappointed to hear the bartender speak very loudly and say bad words, inappropriate vulgarity towards the staff, the waitresses, behavior which had no reason to be towards a waitress, very friendly and professional as well. than listening. This explains why I only gave it two stars for the atmosphere. For instance, one person found it excessive to pay 23 for an entrecote with frozen fries and a roquefort sauce.
Super!

Lovely restaurant with ample outdoor seating in a welcoming and cozy patio next to the stream (including a water mill). We stopped here mid-hike for a lunch and though our group size required some accomodations, the staff were quick in putting a couple of tables together and providing us with a lovely setting for a lunch. We mostly ordered salads and croque monsieurs. The menus state the salads are large, and that's probably even an understatement. We got the petrarque salad (duck, including some nice toast with olive spread), ceasar (fried chicken though instead of roasted) and croque monsieurs with fries. The food came surprisingly quickly, service was friendly & jovial. Would definitely return here.

Lovely location by a steam. Service was a bit sluggish though

A rather mixed feelings experience. The place is pretty and has a nice outdoor space near the river. Went there as a table of 6. We called prior to get a table for the night. Had to wait a lot every time we asked the waitress to order, and every time, the orders would arrive separately, and we had to wait again for the whole table to be served. The dishes were a bit overpriced, according to us, and the name and description on the menu did not match what we were expecting to get and what we got. The additional sauce they charge 2€ with the meat is the same they use on their pasta. Their Mojito Passion is way too sweet. The duck was overcooked and only came with pepper sauce, which gave it an ashy taste. Don't really recommend it.

COME IF OK WITH RUDE SERVICE staffs are very RUDE to people who can’t speak French. The young lady had a big smiling to every other tables and just show her annoyed face to me and my family at all time and do give a f to our plates. We can feel she was unwilling to serve us, we waited so long for every serve of food or drink, so we finally decided to leave without dessert served. Food are average, not authentic French tastes. And the staff on the counter, didn’t calculate our orders into combo price which was 20% expensive than the menu. Glad my sister corrected that. We were in a wonderful family trip and didn’t want to be disrespectful to anyone, the only thing was we are Asian and don’t know much about French:)

Heerlijk verse forel gegeten met knapperige amandelen. Rest van menu was ook gewoon goed. Vlotte en vriendelijke bediening. Fijn terras aan de rivier met veel ruimte. Onze hond meer dan welkom. (Translated by Google) Delicious fresh trout eaten with crunchy almonds. Rest of menu was also just good. Smooth and friendly service. Nice terrace on the river with lots of space. Our dog more than welcome.

Drinks at normal French prices. Peaceful to sit and catch your breath in beautiful surroundings. Beautiful terrace at the back or front of the village. Good and smooth service. (the opening hours are more flexible than what is stated, do not hesitate to drop in a little before 2 p.m.)

Lovely food and setting next to the river and waterwheel, food very reasonably priced compared to Isle de la Sorgue. Lovely old village with beautiful setting and amazing plane tree in centre of the square. Parking only five mins away. We went thier three times during our stay. Waiters were not unfriendly but were brisk and efficient.

Food is good but a tad pricey due to the nice location. Surroundings beautiful, lots of shade. Toilets are ok (if you're used to French standards), but, as always, not enough for the size of the place. Recommended.

Really delicious but not big proportions. We weren’t full only with the plat, should have also ordered entrée

I organized a lunch here for my work team lunch and it was really great. They set up a nice menu for us a a great price (27.50 per person) and they were flexible about vegetarian options. The table we had was great for 22 people, outside next to the beautiful green water and the gorgeous turning wheel. I definitely will be coning back with friends visiting me or when Im back in Fountaine de Vaucluse! Merci Thierry!

Uitstekend restaurant. (Translated by Google) Excellent restaurant. It is especially wonderful to sit and dine on the terrace behind the church, under the chestnut trees. The service is smooth and pleasant, the food very tasty. The menu may not seem very extensive, but there really is something for everyone. The watermill increases the atmosphere. Recommended to anyone who wants good quality food in Fontaine de Vaucluse.

On the 8th of November 2023, we unexpectedly stumbled upon Les Terrasses Bar with our visiting family and were pleasantly surprised. The warm reception and excellent dishes left us thoroughly satisfied. We indulged in a delightful café gourmand and relished every bite of the profiteroles. This restaurant is highly recommended for its delectable cuisine and exceptional service.
I wanted to recommend on this restaurant, good food and amazing service, my husband and I sat down for dinner and ordered pizza and salad and everything was delicious, we had a lovely waitress named Julie, after seeing that I did not know French that well she spoke to me in English and told me that mt french is good... I high recommend the food and the service was 🇮🇱amazing...Shir from Israel ❤️❤️

You cannot beat a great beef & bacon burger, crispy hot chips, washed down with a chilled white Hoegaarden beer - the best! My wife had the Caesar salad which was crisp, fresh and a decent size. Great view of the river, served by friendly and efficient staff. Well done Grand Cafe Les Terraces!

Kwamen met 6 personen maar het was te veel werk om een extra tafel er bij te zetten of iets voor ons te doen totaal niet klantvriendelijk (Translated by Google) Came with 6 people but it was too much work to add an extra table or do something for us, not customer friendly at all

We just had some drinks but were blown away by the great service from Julie and Rachid. Friendly humorous and welcoming. Not to mention the fantastic location. Thanks again guys, from the three Hollanders and the Irishman.

We came back for three different meals because the staff were so lovely - especially Julie and Rachid. The chocolate mousse and the house rum were particularly amazing. What a beautiful restaurant!
