One of the historical public parks in Akita. It had been the castle, now it belongs to Akita city. Very beautiful red leaves in a Japanese style garden. There are fountain with carp fishes, lotus pond, Japanese shrines and others. Free to visit. It's very nice and relaxing for us.

It's not the best place to visit in the middle of summer but since I'm only in Akita to catch the Kanto Matsuri, this seems like a good place to explore within minutes from the train station. Of course, I was made to regret my decision because the weather was scorching and as I made my way to the park, I was greeted by the insane screeching of cicadas. I was told this would be a beautiful place for cherry blossom viewing in spring (and I have no doubts about that). But maybe in summer, it's more advisable to give this park a miss. Not even the sight of the Osumiyagura turret / guard post is of any consolation... And the lotus littered moat? Let's just say it kind of looks like a total mess...

A big, beautiful, and historic park in Akita city. You can easily walk to here from city centre. And there is a Akita Arts Theatre Mille Has around the entrance. After a last minute change of plans, we found ourselves in Akita for a few hours longer on a drizzly Friday morning in June than expected. We were hanging around to see the Akita inu at "Akita Dog Station" that didn't open until 11AM and stumbled across this park nearby while walking around earlier that morning. I honestly wish I had known about this park earlier. It was the quintessential Japanese park with little shrines, a mini waterfall, garden, woods, bamboo and even a small eatery and gift shop. We didn't have time to do any eating or shopping, nor did we have time to go into the small museum located in a restored building. Instead we spent it just walking around the garden areas and enjoying being outside of the city. If you're in Akita, do yourself a favor and block out a few hours to give this park and surrounding areas some of your time, you won't regret it.

Beautiful park that is very well maintained. When I went, the were doing some tree-trimming which created some unpleasant noise, but that was the only thing I could possibly say negative about it. Some buildings near the entrance like the Culture Creation Center run events occasionally, so it's good to watch out for those too.

The Akita Museum of Art is a modern museum that showcases the works of Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, a renowned painter and printmaker. Very small museum, 15 minutes to see the entirety at a leisurely pace. Not the greatest value for 1000 yen. Also, no photography allowed. As a foreigner this causes problems since I can’t translate the Japanese text accompanying the artwork with Google Lens, and most of it was only displayed in Japanese. The QR code for an English audio guide failed to work, too. So, as a museum, it could be improved fundamentally. The large painting of historical Akita was interesting but did not get contextualized well. The cafe and shop has a beautiful view, and the staircase going up to the main level is memorable. So, it can still be a way to spend an hour or so if you take your time and unwind in the cafe.

Permanent exhibition it is pretty small. Maybe 20 pieces in total. The not permanent one it was about the best pics of National geographic, animals, culture, landscapes etx. actually really cool. The downside it was that everything was only in Japanese (no english at all), and it was forbidden to take picture about everything. Ticket it was 800-1000 yen for full access, around 200yen only for the permanent exhibition.

I really enjoyed the special exhibit. I was a bit sad we couldn’t take pictures but understood (200 year old prints are delicate) the permanent exhibit was impressive, but not extensive. Staff was nice and helpful. I’ll definitely come back next time there is a special exhibit I want to see.

A very small but very lovable airport. Lots of little shops for souvenirs, fun decorations everywhere, and easy to understand signage. Overall a great place to start or end a journey, and I would not have anything bad to say if someone told me they were landing here.

A great little airport, especially for collecting visitors and flying out for a long time. They have long-term parking where you can leave your car for the duration of your trip for a reasonable fee. Online, it can be confusing to work out, but you can leave your car over 20 days, the fee just increases after twenty days. When parking to collect someone, the fee is free, which is great. You can also easily find the timetables for all flights, and because of its size, the airlines are understanding about coming in by bus and the bus timetables. Overall a nice airport. Though, they do have trouble landing with fog (ANA) and you can find your flight turned around at the last minute and sent back to Tokyo.

Shopping options are limited to local products but there is a very good selection of sake (nihonshu) and local beers with all the snacks, also made locally, that will pair best with the sake. Two restaurants, one with the local specialties, one more western, and many car rental options.

Omoriyama Zoo is a compact yet diverse zoo situated on a hilltop, featuring enclosures for giraffes, elephants, big cats, and birds along with a visitor center. One of its major attractions is the pair of African elephants which are seldom found in Japan. The zoo also houses healthy and large tigers. Additionally, there is a steam locomotive outside the zoo that adds to its charm.
This is my second visit in less than a year. Children under high school age are free so that was a big plus. There’s an attraction park there so my friend spent half the time there riding them. We enjoyed learning about the different animals. The elephant did seem a big lonely compared to a few months ago. Winter blues? Overall a great place and wheel chair friendly.

The trip was disappointing and heart-breaking. Although there are lots of animal species, some of their living environments were really bad when I visited (especially the penguin tank). Besides, some animals (wolf, bear) were constantly walking in circles, they look nervous and stressed out in their small living environment. It’s been so long that i did a review until i crossed this. I felt that this zoo deserve a 5 stars review as it’s really worth the trip and also way too spectacular. There are lot’s of variety and interactions with the animals up close and i mean real close, also the enclosure of the animals are pretty clean so there’s little smell to it and it’s really acceptable. Also, the food and service inside the zoo is affordable and pretty damn delicious. I was stuttered by the variety of things that the zoo has to offer and it’s got to be one of the best zoo i’ve been. I thought the whole trip was gonna take about 1 hour to explore but i was wrong. It took me 4 hours to finished everything because of the animals interaction up close and also their delicious food. I will definitely come back again. Both my wife and kid are very happy and we literally spend the entire day there with the animals. Also there is like a small amusement park sort of it. If you’re there best is to rent a car, it really convenient to move around. I will see you again Omoriyama Zoo! Thanks for showing me around

Comparatively small zoo but variety is good. Especially they have a pair of African elephants which I had not seen anywhere else in Japan. Tiger is also very big and healthy. Additional attraction is steam locomotive placed outside zoo. Slightly inconvenient to access. Takes 20 minutes with uphill slopes from Araya station.
