Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is an important church located in Bergamo, Italy. With a Romanesque exterior and a lavish Baroque interior, it contains many unusual features, including no specific main entrance. The church was built over a roman temple of Clemence and underwent restoration throughout the years, resulting in a blend of many styles.
An incredible place. You must visit it! The price is lower than i expected. (3€ for adults and 1€ for 14-25 years old and 70+ persons. The architecture is amazing.
Andreea Jinga — Google review
Beautiful church, a must see when you are walking in the old town of Bergamo. The entrance is just 3€ for adults and 1€ for people under 25 years, but even if it cost more, it would still be worth it. The shades of green that they used on the ceiling really stood out for me, gorgeous colors.
Alex Iacobita — Google review
I never review churches but this one is something extraordinary! If you’re ever in Bergamo visit this Basilica! It’s very beautiful from the outside but for a small fee you can enter and enjoy this piece of art. Every corner is so detailed, colorful and unique🫶🏽🫶🏽
Apostolis Houiris — Google review
Magnificent church building, outside and inside, from far and from near. It's also free to enter and visit. The different rich decorations, the details and materials, to include massive tapestries, are just stunning.
Giulia — Google review
It's a major church with more than 800 years of history. From architecture to interior design are quite unique and special. I believe it's the first time I saw a church with such large proportion of tapestries and intarsia decoration. You can see different periods interior design along the past 800 years, very astonishing. The exquisite intarsia, which is a form of wood inlaying, is definitely a testimony to the Italian wood craftsmanship! I was really amazed by this basilica.
Amanda Miao — Google review
Probably one of the most beautiful churches in the world. It's outside already beautiful, does not prepare you for the collection of medieval tapestries, renaissance wall- and ceiling-paintings, gorgeous wood carvings, or detailed marble sculptures awaiting you within. Truly a must see to anyone visiting the region.
J “the crazed” — Google review
One of my favourite basilica and the old city's atmospere is incredible. I have been there one year ago and now I was nearby and defenitely had to see again.
Balázs Cseh — Google review
Spectacular cathedral. Free to enter. Located right next to many cafeterias and restaurants. Easy to get from Bergamo airport by bus or taxi.

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo is a true architectural marvel. The intricate details, stunning frescoes, and peaceful atmosphere make it a must-visit destination. Step inside and be transported to a world of beauty and spirituality.
Willy Dinata — Google review
€5 entry fee worth every cent! Gorgeous detail at every turn.
C Lunney — Google review
Very impressive. You have to pay to enter but if its too expensive you can still glance in from next to the ticket office. Once inside you can read about the history and observe the work being undertaken to renew and restore the building and it's ornate interior.
Col D — Google review
This church must not be confused with Colleoni Chapel which is attracts an entry fee and is literally next door. More so you are not allowed to take photographs inside of Colleoni Chapel. The Basilica is very beautiful inside as you would expect in Italy. Great architecture which is well preserved.
Legends l — Google review
A worth visiting basilica in Bergamo where you can find the complete history of Santa Maria Maggiore. This basilica has beautiful paintings from 1200-1500AD and it's beautifully done. It's a 1km short hike to Basilica and you can also opt for a mini train which costs around 2-3€ per person. We visited during the weekend and it was not overcrowded instead we explored the whole place very peacefully. During the trek, you will come across the whole city view and it's beautiful. Entry ticket price:- 5€ for regular visitor and 2€ for students with valid ID card. Overall it was a great experience studying the history of this place along with seeing the paintings and old artifacts.
Cuisine of Paradise — Google review
Get ready to feel lost… the beauty of this church amazed me, like the majority of those vowed to the Virgin Mary. There is no centimetre of the church that has not been decorated, embellished or have and intarsia. Breathtaking!
Nora — Google review
It's a historical place of interest with religious atmosphere, very well maintained. Visitors are well informed of the cathedral decorations and it's history. I was totally inspired.

Had to wait until all the masses finish on a sumday so earliest time was 1.30pm. very nice decor with lots of information. Entry cost €5
Marbella Suzanne Group — Google review
Super nice temple. I generally do not agree with having to pay to get into a church. It kind of defeats the purpose. But besides it’s definitely worth going in because it’s absolutely wonderful. It was built in 1137 after the town’s people prayed to the Virgin Mary to protect them from the plague that was ravaging most of Europe. In return for protecting them, they built this church dedicated to her.

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Bergamo Cathedral is a significant historical site in the city of Bergamo and is home to a bishop. The cathedral has a neoclassical facade and notable artwork, including mosaics that were recovered from churches that were here before it was built. This is a must-see destination when in Bergamo alta.
Duomo di Bergamo's construction works began in the 12th century. The final works ended in the 17th century. Some major renovation works was done in the 19th century. The cathedral is located in the Citta Alta (The elevated city) part of Bergamo, as opposed to the Citta Bassa (The lower city). Citta Alta is the old town with more history and where the cathedral and some other historic buildings are located. The interior of the cathedral is stunning with its ornaments, paintings, reliefs, and statutes. It is only 3 minutes walking from the cathedral to Vecchia Piazza (The old square) where you can have a rest at one of the many cafes and restaurants as you watch the life is going by in this ancient square. In the alleys around this cathedral some scenes from the box office hit film 'Call Me By Your Name' were shot.
Miassar Miski — Google review
This cathedral is beautiful from outside but the inside, too. After entering you immediately feel something special around you. You have to visit this cathedral.
martinka 219 — Google review
Very beautiful cathedral. It’s definitely worth checking out to see the interior. It’s beautifully decorated with pairings and statues.
Hunor Gocz — Google review
There's a lot happening in the architecture and its decorative elements. The details can be fascinating, especially the arcs at the entrances on which every pilar is a different shape and material. However, there's a big mismatch in decorative elements inside. The entirety is overwhelming, as if they went overboard trying to impress people with their gold and lost sight of the idea of beauty. Even though the elements in itself are well made and interesting, the total was flashy and took my interest away quickly.
Minka Ja — Google review
It’s a must in Bergamo old town. I recommend to take the funicular to reach it, but you really will enjoy the way by walk (steep streets).
Luis J. Canet (luisjcanet) — Google review
The Cathedral of Bergamo, located right next to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, has a striking marble façade, but its interior is not particularly impressive. You may find it rather dull compared to the impressive Baroque interior decoration of the Basilica. Therefore, I recommend visiting this cathedral first, as its entrance is free of charge.
Murat Yıkılmaz — Google review
This is a must see when in Bergamo alta
Henrik E — Google review
Note the opening times differ during weekdays: 07:30am-12:30pm, and 03:00pm-06:30pm. Opens throughout from 07:00am-07:00pm on weekends. But it is also closed if mass is in progress. Entrance is free for the devout, and tourists are expected to donate a fee at the entrance. The colorful frescos on the walls and ceilings are well kept, very detailed and colorful. Worth spending some time admiring the art.
Julie Pan — Google review
The Bergamo Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Alexander of Bergamo, stands as a testament to medieval Italian architecture. Its façade boasts intricate sculptures and reliefs, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Inside, the vast interior houses priceless artworks, including paintings by Titian and Lotto, and the ornate high altar. The stunning Cappella Colleoni, adorned with marble and gold leaf, adds to the cathedral's splendor. With its soaring spires and rich history dating back to the 12th century, Bergamo Cathedral remains a cultural and architectural gem in the heart of Lombardy, Italy. On Sundays, the echoes of the majestic organ fill the halls of Bergamo Cathedral, adding a grandiose soundtrack to your visit, enriching the experience with its melodic presence.
Nino Khakhubia — Google review
Beautiful church with a rich historical content... try and visit..
Odianosen Solomon — Google review
This Cathedral is highly underrated This is as beautiful as il duomo itself. The architecture is very similar and you cam get inside for only 2 EUR if you are -25 yo Worth visiting in the city center of Bergamo
Oscar Munoz — Google review
Visited Bergamo Old Town today. You access this from from Bergamo New town via the venicular railway. This takes you to the top of the hill and into the old town. The town has 3 churches in the square which are amazing in their design and show the wealth of the church and those buried inside. The town has some lovely shops, bars and restaurants with a signature pasta dish called Casonchelli ravioli which is either sausage or cheese filling with amaretto crushed biscuit and butter served with a buttery sauce. It was delicious. They have a special cake covered with marzipan and little birds on top called le Polentine. Very rich sponge cake with chocolate buttercream and made with polenta instead of flour. Also chocolate chip ice cream was invented in Bergamo. The town is very beautiful with wonderful architecture and great views from the top over the new town. The floor are cobbled or laid in the parquet floor design which is very beautiful.

Historical landmark
Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo Alta is a charming public square steeped in history and surrounded by iconic landmarks. The Contarini fountain, Palazzo della Ragione, and the imposing Campanone Clock Tower are just a few of the architectural marvels that adorn this picturesque space. Visitors can also admire the Cathedral, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its intricate carvings by Lorenzo Lotto, and the Baptistery featuring Colleoni's coat of arms.
This is the core square of Bergamo and a popular hangout place with coffee shops, pizza shops, restaurants, museums, and magnificent historical buildings around it. It was built on the remains of the old Roman forum. From the 15th century the square buildings the surround the square were starting to get built giving it the rectangular shape that it has now and making it the central piazza of Bergamo. Venetian lions can still be observed on the walls dating to the time when they ruled over this area.

Nice excursion to Citta Alta. Rode the furnicular up early, beat the heat and waiting in line. Beautiful views and buildings.
anne gibney — Google review
Beautiful place to visit with various attractions in the vicinity. Most are free though some you may have to pay! Nice atmosphere though not the smiliest or friendliest compared with southern Italy. There are lots of cafes, bars and shops up there. You can enjoy a day up here. It can get very cold in the winter so appropriate outfit might be necessary.
Legends l — Google review
Very beautiful old town square. Worth a visit if in Bergamo. Very close to the fernicular station above. Can also walk to Baluardo di San Giacomo to get a great view of the city from the hill top.
Abilash M S — Google review
In some ways like a mini Rome. The old city of Bergamo is a charming, lovely place. A little bit off the plaza on the main walk street there is this restaurant that serves facaccia bread. The facaccia bread is reasonably priced and very tasty. There's also Marianna's a delightful gelatiria that claims to be the originator of stracciatella. This is one of those cities that exceeds expectations but is not in the big guide books
William Daniel — Google review
Absolutely beautiful place that I recommend to visit to everyone. It will feel like a Dan Brown novel again. I recommend arriving before sunset and then heading back into town for the night view.
Adam Pýcha — Google review
In contrast to Milano, Bergamo and especially this place feels very old and despite modern shops and restaurants, the square retains a certain aura of the days long past. I would not say it is better then Milano and it is not an unforgettable experience, but surely a very nice trip
Jan Kr?sa — Google review
Piazza Vecchia represents the core of Città Alta: it has been the heart of political power for centuries and it keeps being one of the most popular places for Bergamo’s citizens to spend some time with family and friends. Unfortunately when we have visited it was under construction. No matter what we spent evening in 2 restaurants there as it was most busy place in September, Monday.
Pawe? — Google review
A gem that captures the essence of the city. With its historical buildings, cozy cafes, and lively atmosphere, it's the perfect place to soak up the charm of Bergamo. Take a seat, sip on a cappuccino, and immerse yourself in the picturesque surroundings of this timeless square.

Wonderfully experience. A little touristy, but with some nice surprises along the way. Great Gelato on site ( cherry was my favorite), but wouldn't recommend the restaurants. Was able to get some great pics and a nice ride on the hillside tram-train for my daughter...

Nice and quiet place to spend the afternoon. Take the funicolare cottage alta. So many ancient and historic churches and cathedrals. A cup of coffee is worth it 👌
farouk abou rahal — Google review
Among the busiest places in the city of Bergamo. Interesting plaza with one small fountain in the middle and very authentic picturesque buildings that surround it.
Goran A. — Google review
Of course a must see location in the Citta Alta. Very picturesque square with gorgeous structures circling it. Obviously you can expect it to be very touristy. I recommend visiting early in the morning or visiting during a less crowded time of the year. I was there in early December and the it wasn’t too crowded at all. The weather was gorgeous and it was easier to appreciate the history and get around the old town. Overall a very good experience and beautiful location in Bergamo.
Batu Eroglu — Google review
The main square in the old part of town. Unfortunately no cafes to sit at and admire the beauty, shame. Because the tower and church is very nice to photograph.

At Délice Maison, everything shuts down at 22.00, including McDonald's. However, even after closing time, the staff at Délice Maison continued serving customers with great dedication. They were still taking orders until 22.45. I tried a couple of their sandwiches which were absolutely delightful - one was made with Parma ham and Grana Padano cheese while the other had buffalo meat.
actually the service was super nice, an energetic lady who didn’t understand much English but I succeded to communicate what I’d like. Love the vegan pastry!!

Really Bad Service and rude woman. I order a latte and she give me milk and then she laught. Sorry in germany we only say latte to latte machiato

Good sandwiches but rude service. The cashier rolled her eyes at me because I put my card in the machine to quickly, and that's after she put it in front of me😂 also one of the two lines is cash only and there's no information about that. They got annoyed at me for standing in the wrong line
Mia ?kerman — Google review
We requested a toasted ham sandwich without cheese. This was impossible to do as cheese apparently can not be removed from a sandwich. It was also completely beyond their skills and understanding to make a new sandwich without cheese. Pathetic.
Petter Karlsson — Google review
It is a shame that they make fun of the clients in their native language, but when you speak it to them : non capisco
Andrei Gutescu — Google review
Rude woman at the counter. She was shouting in Italian because she wasn’t able to speak English in an international airport. People should learn that shouting doesn’t make your opposite understand a foreign language.
Fred Minecraft — Google review
Everything closes down at 22.00, even the McDonalds, yet the ladies at Délice Maison sat and served everybody way past their closing time (at 22.45 they were still taking orders). We got a few of their sandwiches (Bufalino with Parma ham and a Grana Padano sandwich), which were delicious. Absolute heroes!

I’m entitled to a food voucher due to severe delay. However, the staff refused to accept my voucher. After I paid and noticed that the voucher is unused, I asked him and the second staff told him that he should accept the voucher. Then he was like: So what do you want now!? I give you another what you paid for? Why do I need same stuff for twice? Especially when it tasted horrible. It’s a complete extortion.
Tsou Yves — Google review
Had a disgusting experience with the angry old lady who was already mentioned in earlier reviews. I wasn’t ready to make order and she started yelling at me due to my ignorance. I tried to ask about the products she was selling but she refused to answer me (atleast in English, which should be the standard for an international airport). Also she was lying me about the avaibility of the product just to get rid of me. What on earth is this kind of human doing at customer service profession? Please never visit this place again. The employees do not have professional skills or manners.
Erkko Lonkila — Google review
I don’t recognize the common experience here. I was served a good cappuccino by a lovely lady.
David Fornborg — Google review
I had an awful experience at this coffee shop. I was handed a receipt and didn’t realise you had to give it back in as never experienced this during my two weeks in Italy, so and put it in the bin. I explained what happened and The cashier confirmed I paid and a barista made the coffee but a third ‘woman’ refused to give it unless I fished it out of the bottom of the bin. The other staff laughing and this third woman screaming at todays entertainment of the stupid tourists. I have never ever experienced rudeness and humiliation like from these people. Please save yourself an awful experience and go elsewhere no coffee is worth this treatment to another a fella human even if they don’t understand your ‘system’.
Laura JJ — Google review
The woman at the counter was just plain rude. They were mocking international clients for using English to order. She was offended because I've tried to say "thank you" in Italian...

It was quite a huge plate (delicious btw), it was all amazing. There is a 2.5 EUR service fee for dinning in. Note that if you dine in you need to order at the reception not at the self service machine, seems that is only take away (couldn't find english version so it was a bit difficult to understand, maybe that could be improved)

International airport where the waiter does not speak any English. Not any hot dish from the menu card available. No electricity in the table socket to charge phone. We ordered 4 soups - received one. However stil airport prices. No more comments. Shame.
Tomek Gutowski — Google review
We visited this place on our way back to UK. 1.10.22. There were three of us. We were served by a girl with long black hair tied in a ponytail. She was without life and willingness to work. Such a mimosa .. I asked her to add brie cheese to my sandwich and she refused even though I wanted to pay for it, and I don't know why? Nevermind. Then my friends ordered portions of fries, for which we asked several times. I saw that the other tables didn't have this problem and they delivered chips straight away. Then we wanted to order tea, but the tall lady with long blonde hair in a ponytail waved her hand, indicating that we should order from our waitress who didn't give a sh..t by the way. Then the blonde lady began to take care of the other tables. Looks like she didn't want to serve us and she had some sort of personal prejudice against us. After half an hour the fries arrived. If I wasn't hungry, I'd send them back to the kitchen. The service here is at the lowest level. Waitresses need some training because it looks like they don't know how to treat customers or maybe it's a lack of good manners, so there's probably nothing that can be done. A tall blonde girl should be suspended for such service. I informed the manager about the behaviour of the blonde lady, she apologised and that was it. Because what could she do. I gave one star because you can't give zero. Food could be better. Pricey as hell. Do not recommend this place. From the beginning they show us we are not welcome and treat us disrespectfully.
Kamila Nowaczewska — Google review
Horribly overpriced, poor service, and one of the worst paninos I've ever had in Italy. Plus a 2.50 euro service fee per person! Only thing worthwhile are the electrical sockets and even that's just because there aren't any in the poorly equipped airport...
Sly F — Google review
Surprisingly, veryyy good! I got the vegetarian toast right before my flight. Couldn’t take a picture because I was so hungry and it was super yummy. It had pesto sauce and the cheese was awesome. Go try it
Elif Atalay — Google review
So so overpriced and poor service - even if we paid 5€ for it!! We had a tartufo and a Luis. Not good, we do not recommend it. The only good this was the electric plugs, but just because Bergamo airport is so bad that they don’t provide it.
Carmen Borrelli — Google review
One of the only cafes in the airport that has some power outlets, hense why I picked it. It's extremely low for the airport to do this and only leave paid power outlets.. (not the fault of this cafe though) The food and wine were overpriced, which is to be expected in an airport. But the selection was quite good, and I enjoyed the vegetables plate/starter. The bread was completely stale though. The staff are nice and don't rush you out, which is appreciated.
Natalia Neustroeva — Google review
Firsty I have to say that the panini we had was excellent in taste and quality and the staff is very polite and friendly. However I only gave 3 stars for the following reason, you are charged €2.50 EACH for SERVICE which consists to bring a sandwich to the table and not a 3 course meal. We have learnt our lesson
Suzanne — Google review
The best airport lunch ever! Admittedly, the prices are a bit higher than the rest of the restaurants there but the food you get is exceptional. The staff is really good and very efficient so you definitely won't have to wait for long to get your sandwich.

Offshoot of the local craft brewery Elav, the only place where to get a decent drink at BGY. This said, the selection on tap doesn't rotate and often one-two taps out of six are not available, and the prices can be hefty. Not to mention the terrible terrible music (only Radio Italia, yikes).

this place is very expensive for what it offers (see the receipt in the pictures), but in any case we had a salad, a quiche and a "focaccia fantasia" and the qulity of the ingredients was good.

(Translated by Google) VERY EXPENSIVE! 😱 2 cappuccinos and 2 croissants 11 euros.... But like the menu on offer at 5.30 includes cappuccino brioche and juice.... 🤔. Here you get less and pay more.... Other places to have breakfast at Orio al Serio airport are better (Original) CARISSIMO! 😱 2 Cappuccini e 2 brioches 11 euro.... Ma come il menù in offerta a 5,30 comprende cappuccino brioche e succo.... 🤔. Qui prendi meno e paghi di più.... Meglio altri posti dove fare colazione alla aeroporto di Orio al Serio

Very rude staff -the worst experience in Italy! 1. They forgot to prepare my order and were surprised that I was in a hurry (at the airport:/) 2. When I asked for a bit of hot water for a double espresso, the staff started arguing, insisting it would be an Americano with a different price and absolutely refused to give me a bit of water. Different price for a drop of water???? As a barista, I understand coffee culture, but customer satisfaction and their preferences are more important—especially since you're at the airport with a multinational clientele and many reasons why a customer might ask for a coffee prepared in a different way.

The Croissant with pistachio is a empty croissant that has a trace of pistachio on the surface and is empty inside.

The service was irritating and bordering on rude.

(Translated by Google) After the employee has done her time chatting with her friend, you manage to order, immediately ask to pay for two very classic spritz aperitifs; he says to sit calmly and you'll pay later; Do you want some appetizers that are included? ok fine: result two watery aperitifs 90% ice and half a slice of orange with 2 squares of hard pizza 14 euros .... but for pleasure. nice little game, other than appetizers included... They were not included: they even pass as a discount on the receipt, absurd: Very high price, very low quality of both the service and the aperitif. Terrible, it has never happened even in the most sensitive tourist places to these things, let alone in a shopping centre.

(Translated by Google) Great smart guys! The sales assistant couldn't find the barcode of one of the two items and scanned the other, more expensive one. I was in too much of a hurry to notice it in time and make a fuss. Shame on you!!! (Original) Grandissimi furbacchioni! La commessa non riusciva a trovare il barcode di uno dei due articoli ed ha scansionato l'altro, quello più costoso. Andavo troppo di fretta per notarlo in tempo e fare storie. Vergognatevi!!!

(Translated by Google) The clean environment and the careful arrangement of the food encouraged us to stop. Unfortunately the ready meals arrived frozen without having specified it, the air conditioning was on full blast and the final bill was really salty...disappointing!!!
