Imabari

Imabari is a city on Japan’s Shikoku island. The 17th-century Imabari Castle is surrounded by a wide moat. The Shimanami-Kaido route links Imabari to nearby islands via suspension bridges. On nearby Ōshima Island, Kirosan Observatory offers panoramic views. Hirakiyama Park on Hakata Island is known for its spring cherry blossoms. Omishima Island is home to the Ōyamazumi Shrine, with a collection of samurai weaponry.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Imabari Castle is a historic fortress from the Edo era that showcases its original walls and moat, while also boasting a reconstructed keep with exhibits. Although the interior has undergone modern remodeling, visitors can enjoy spectacular views from atop the castle. In addition to access to two small museums housed in turrets and an area above the north entrance with fascinating information on defense strategies and moats, there is also free admission to wander around the grounds and inner shrine.
The interior was a bit disappointing as it has been remodelled into a more modern building, but the view from the top was spectacular. The entrance fee also covers two turrents (turned into small museums) and the area above the north entrance (with very interesting information on the moats and defense strategies). Even if you choose not to pay the fee for the castle itself, you can still wander around the grounds and inner shrine for free. The castle is also lit up at night which makes for somw great photo opportunities.

A unique castle where black sea bream and puffer fish swim in the moat. It was a famous castle that was supervised by Takatora Todo and whose construction was supervised by Kanpei Watanabe. I also enjoyed the many exhibits inside the venue. The view from the castle tower is also good.

Had a great time visiting Imabari Castle and Fukiage Shrine. Very cool history museum with a great view of the water and city.

While Imabari is not a particularly famous place, Imabari Castle is a very good castle. The fortifications have been reconstructed well, so you can see the exterior of the castle in its full beauty. The main draw of Imabari Castle, however, is the observation deck. Imabari is directly on the Sea of Japan and the top of the castle offers amazing views of the surrounding area. If you're in the area, it's well worth the trip.
Joshua Hodges — Google review
One of the better reconstructed castles in Japan. Looks amazing from the outside when the light at dusk catches it correctly. Museum inside is fairly good and offers good views of the surrounding area especially around dusk.
Barry Knight — Google review
This is a small castle but very nice as not so many tourist now.

Who doesn’t live to visit old castles! Imabari Castle no exception! This was worth a special visit! 40 minutes drive from Kotahara Onsen hotel, on the way to Hiroshima, it was truly a worthwhile stop! Enjoy the pictorial, not a sunny day? But it added some drama to the visit!
Peter A. Knipp — Google review
Well-preserved and charming castle in the centre of the town. Inside the main compound, one can go up into the keep and visit a nearby shrine. This castle has one of only a few seawater moats in all Japan, and many species of fish can be seen in the waters. Worth dropping in if nearby.
Gareth Morris — Google review
I visited it around sunset and the atmosphere was kinda magic. The castle looks magnificent in quite uninteresting surrounding. What's worth mentioning is the moat filled with sea water (connect with a channel with Imabari port). In the evening it was very charming place and quiet without many visitors (only couple of people praying). Maybe it's only during spring time, because the whole city looks a little bit deserted in the evening.
Paka Buraka — Google review
Must-visit place in Imabari. The castle is huge, gorgeous, and you get to go to the top of the main "tower". There's a student discount for the tickets to the tower, but no pics are allowed inside, only at the top observation deck.

Very nice Castle. Great outside and inside. Beautiful scenery around and very well maintained.

It’s worthy to pay a visit. I took bus for Imabari station and got off right in front of castle. The castle was defending pirates to protect people in the region.
Christin Lin — Google review
This is a beautiful castle set within a moat that’s fed from the harbour and rises and falls with the tide. It costs 520 Yen to get in for adults. Children are free. The castle itself is fantastic, with a stunning view from the top (be prepared to walk up a lot of stairs!). Adjoining the castle is a fantastic natural history museum. It shows the local geology, along with fish, birds, plants and animals found in the area. Watch out for some impressively long seaweed and a giant clam that is truly a giant. This museum, along with the castle itself and the view from the top, is well worth a visit.

Oyamazumi Shrine, located in Omishima Island, is a spiritual nature shrine surrounded by ancient camphor trees and bark-roofed shrines. The complex also includes a museum featuring armor and weapons from the samurai period of Japanese history. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, signing goshuincho books is currently unavailable but visitors can receive a pre-customized seal on separate paper to place in their book.
Oyamazumi Shrine, which is dedicated to the god of navigation, is a shrine you should definitely visit if you're in the area. The museum exhibits armor, swords, and other equipment that account for 80% of national treasures and important cultural properties.

Drop by if you’re biking in the area. The museum attached to the temple is so worth it. It contains many national treasures including samurai armors, swords and weapons
Laura Dru — Google review
Such a beautiful shrine to wander around - we arrived at dusk and only had a few minutes but will definitely go back! I love the 2000 year old tree and temple history, want to get back to see the samurai artifacts.
jj walsh — Google review
This is a beautiful temple and very large but very few visitors. If you are biking, it is 100% worth it to venture off on the island explorer route to visit this temple.

The collection of national treasures here was really worth the detour to this side of the island. Unfortunately photos are not allowed, but if you're into huge ancient swords and amazingly preserved armor from the samurai era, make a point to come here.
Chris O'Dell — Google review
They aren’t signing goshuincho books due to COVID at the moment, but will give you a pre customized seal on a separate piece of paper if you would like to stick it in your book. Highly recommend checking out the armor at the museum that ties with Tsuruhime and the huge camphor tree on the shrine grounds.

Always enjoy visiting this most spiritual nature shrine in Omishima island. Highly recommend visiting especially if you’re a fan of Japanese history. You will enjoy treasure hunts of samurai period in the museum inside the shrine. (Although they were closed due to COVID-19 at this moment.)

Specialty Museums
The Towel Museum of Art is a small, but well-done, museum filled with souvenir towels. The main attraction is the displayed towel designs, though there are also nice exhibits on the history of towels and their design. There's also a cafe and garden on site.
Lots of shopping opportunities! The museum itself is at the top of multiple floors of shops with brand collaboration towels and gift items, a few different cafes, a wedding venue space, and fabric-based art exhibits. Informative, live working textile machines and explanation of the towel making process, and lots of great photo ops.
William Jameson — Google review
It’s just not a Towel Museum . Hear was wonderful garden peaceful environment. Before I visited, I couldn't imagine it.

This unique museum is located in a large building that is mostly filled with towel-related merchandise. The display area, while not small, almost feels secondary to the retail floors. In any case, the exhibits were well done, including a really nice Winnie the Pooh section. A nice surprise was a lovely terrace garden that includes a Cafe with a garden view and a shop with many succulents and planters for sale. Among the retail offerings within the museum building, it was impossible to find proper museum merchandise. We hoped to find a magnet or pin representing the museum but found none.
Armando Landin — Google review
Quite a huge facility and nice place to see the art of making design towels. They have a Moomin swedish museum on top too. Have restaurant also for light refreshments.
Vagabond 0911 — Google review
Towel museum ?? I couldn’t believe there could be this kind of museum. Who could think of a towel can be a thing to be exhibited? Well ~ if you don’t come and visit here you’ll never know what it’s like. The scale of this museum is really huge and there’s a pretty garden outside of the museum. You get an admission ticket with a small piece of towel. This Imabari towel is well known for high-priced, high quality of towel in Japan. I was really surprised to see all those towel art works. So lovely and so amazing piece of art works are definitely attractive enough to every viewers. There are many collaboration products done with cartoon characters as well. It makes you open your wallet. You might end up spending a lot of money to buy cute and beautiful stuffs in the shop after walking around the magnificent exhibition. Great exhibition ~ The best towel products~ People of all ages including kids and adults would have a wonderful happy time here. One to be desired is that there is no public transportation to get here. The best way is to come here by a rented car. That’s why I couldn’t see many foreign tourists but the natives who come in a tour package.
June Lee — Google review
You start your visit in the factory and then can see a lot of towel based creations in the museum. The towels are not a Big deal but they created a lot of things with Moomins, Hello Kitty and Walt Disney figures. Those are nice and funny and save the otherwise not so interesting place. You can of course buy a lot of stuff, including high quality towels.
Tamás Marján — Google review
A very interesting place! There are several floors, which are partly educational, partly manufactoring, partly retail. Showcased a new fabric technology on our visit today. Many character towels and products, like Hello Kitty, Snoopy, Moomin, etc. There is a nice garden with a cafe. Tax free purchases in cash only. Otherwise can accept credit cards. Remember to pay for purchases in that same department. We ended up sorting out our baskets again and went back to each department on different floors to pay. Staff excellent, though.
Wayne Kwong — Google review
They have a huge collection of Made in Japan towels which are very nice and luxurious to the touch. Unfortunately the prices are beyond lots of ordinary folks. There’s also several restaurants and cafe within the complex including a Hello Kitty exhibition where you have to pay to enter.

The 2nd Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge is a group of three suspension bridges that stretch over the Kurushima Strait for more than 4 kilometers. Transportation
Ōmishima Island, the largest island on the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and abundant mandarin orange orchards. The island boasts ambitious architecture and offers popular sea views along with scenic cycling routes. Oyamazumi Shrine, a major tourist attraction on the island, draws visitors to explore its cultural significance.
(Translated by Google) Omishima was a very nice place. When I stayed overnight for an academic conference-related event held at Omishima Space, I rented a car and went to see the art spots scattered around the island. You can see everything in about 30 minutes, so you can go around art -> short drive -> art -> drive -> sometimes shrines, etc. At Omishima Brewery, you can buy craft beer in cans on the spot (there's also a parking lot), so it's great to buy on the drive and drink at your hotel in the evening. Omishima Shrine was a wonderful place with a very pure and solemn feeling. Nearby, there was a hamburger restaurant that used wild boar, the prize-winning gibier in Japan, and it was very stylish, so I thought Omishima was a great place for young people to enjoy themselves. Ta. When Omishima's accommodation capacity was low, which was the case for me except for one night, I would choose a hotel near Imabari Station and cross the bridge from there to visit many times. Although there is a toll on the expressway, the experience of crossing the bridge itself is fun, so even though I drove back and forth from Imabari Station to Omishima three times, it was a fun drive and I could feel the sea breeze. If you head from Imabari to Omishima, you will first see Oshima and then Hakatajima on the way. Oshima is the first island, and there are quite a few people getting off, so if you think it's interesting and want to get off, you can try it. Oshima also has a large eating and drinking area, and the observatory where you can see the sunset recommended by the Emotional Information Center (Kirosan Observatory Park: Kiro-san, ka, Kirou-san, although I had a hard time pronouncing it, Kiro-san) , on top of a mountain), where you can see a spectacular sunset. When you come here, you will intuitively understand why Imabari Towel's symbol is ah. It's also really fun to ride a boat on Oshima's Noshima Suigun. Due to the topography of the ocean floor near the island in the Seto Inland Sea, there are rapids and steps, but the mischievous captain's maneuvering of the boat as it plunges through the rapids is amazing. By the way, the second island, Hakatajima, seemed to be a residential area and there was no tourist information area for tourists to get off and enjoy it, so I just passed by. In addition to crossing by car, it is also interesting to rent a bicycle at the starting point of the Imabari River bridge and try a round trip to Oshima.

The main tourist attraction on this island is Oyamazumi Shrine. It is the headquarters of Mishima Shrine and Oyamazumi Shrine located in various places, and is said to have been revered by successive imperial courts and military commanders as a god of the mountains, sea, and war. For a shrine on an island, it is surprisingly large and has a long history. From Ikuchijima, cross Tatara Ohashi Bridge, get off at Omishima IC, head north, and you will soon arrive at Roadside Station Tatara Shimanami Park. There is a large parking lot, a viewing spot, a restaurant, and a souvenir shop. Additionally, there is a direct-from-the-farm market. Ehime Prefecture is a thriving agricultural region, and a variety of vegetables, including citrus fruits, are sold at low prices. From there, if you head north on Prefectural Route 51 (Omishima Ring Road) along the northern coast of the island, you will see a new lease of life as more facilities are being built to attract tourists and cyclists. Hakurakuten is an unassuming Chinese eatery that serves up local dishes alongside their standout dish, yakibuta tamago rice. Although quaint in appearance, the food is delicious and portions are ample with a homemade feel. The establishment also offers good service and a pleasant atmosphere. However, it's worth noting that their jajangmyeon dish doesn't live up to traditional expectations as it lacks black beans and instead features a light brown meat sauce served with soft noodles.
Visited 2023/Nov/10 (Fri), ordered "Yakibuta Tamago Meshi (900 yen)" which is a bowl of rice with roast pork and sunny-side-up egg topping and special sweet sauce. Very nice taste, especially the roast pork is very nice. This is the winner of 2017 West Japan B-1 gourmet. This is originated the food for the staff in the Chinese restaurant in this area. When I tried to Google for something to eat in Imabari, I found 焼豚玉子飯seems a very famous local meal. Then I came to this restaurant, and I had a very nice dinner here, the meal itself was simple but very delicious 😋 Basically it was just grilled pork and fried eggs with rice, and I ordered the A set which also came with fried chicken, salad and soup. What a wonderful experience

When searching for food options in Imabari, I stumbled upon a highly recommended spot that caught my attention. Despite my initial skepticism about a dish that consisted only of grilled pork, eggs, and rice, I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, it exceeded all my expectations, with a delectable taste that belied its simplicity. The sauce used in the dish was particularly noteworthy, as it complemented the flavors perfectly. Moreover, the fried chicken was also a standout item, with a different sauce that paired excellently with the rice. I still find myself reminiscing about the delicious flavors of this place and can't wait to return for more.

They open at 11:00 and I came 11:05, there were already people inside and it got busier in a few minutes and there were people waiting outside when I finished. The serving size was big I couldn’t finish it so I asked if I can take it out (had to pay ¥50 for a takeout bag). I’ve tried the recommended dish shown in the picture, it was okay for me, not something I’ll remember but will go back again to try some other dishes they have. Staff were nice even if I couldn’t speak Japanese.

My favorite place to get yakibuta tamago meshi! Lady set is a good deal! Edit: I have to knock off a star because the jajangmyeon is not real jajangmyeon. It doesn't even have black beans in it. Jajang is supposed to be a thick black bean sauce, but they used a light brown meat sauce. Also, the sauce should be served separate to keep the noodles from becoming too soft. Don't order this dish! Stick with the yakibuta tamago meshi.

Restaurant
Shigematsu hanten is a local eatery that offers incredibly tasty cuisine. It has a loyal following from the community and attracts a bustling crowd. Despite the busy atmosphere, the kitchen works efficiently to serve food promptly. One of their popular dishes is yakibuta meshi, which consists of roasted pork and rice topped with a unique double yolk egg. The flavor is absolutely mouthwatering, and it comes at an affordable price of 750yen for a regular-sized serving.
Extremely Extremely delicious. Its more of a local shop than a large restaurant, and had loads of local people. Although the crowd was crazy, the speed of the kitchen was fast enough to keep up. Food of course I had the local famous yakibuta meshi (roasted pork with rice topped with the infamous double yolk egg). Taste was delicious AF, and the price was 750yen for a normal sized bowl. Sufficient for me.

Honestly speaking, really didn’t see why people are crazy abt this place. The potion of every dish is crazy so I can see why a lot of people go there, but still. Simple ramen is ¥450 and my chashu ramen was ¥650. Really cheap but quality is alright. Service was really not great either. I say perfect place for budget sensitive people who wants to get full but if you are looking for a quality, then not my recommendation.

We had what appeared to be a local specialty: the rice bowl with pork topped with sunny side up runny eggs. The food itself was delicious and the restaurant seems to be a popular spot for locals. The service is a bit brusque and the establishment isn't very clean. Not much of an ambiance.

Seafood Restaurant Tairyo is conveniently located in front of the entrance to Oyamazumi Shrine. The restaurant opens at 11:30 am, but visitors often arrive early to secure a spot as it can accommodate about 20 people. Despite being the only open place in town, it tends to get crowded quickly. the only place open in town... no wonder it was busy. Seems no one wants to open, as if they don't want any visitors in their town! Luckily this place was open... a bit cramped, but the ikura and uni, were really yummy. Very different texture and flavour from typical Hokkaido types. Only negative.. the lunch was a bit pricey..but hey, it is a tourist spot.

The store opens at 11:30, but when I visited the store at 10:00, there were already four groups of people writing their names on the reservation table in front of the store. I was the fifth person, but I was able to enter the store as soon as it opened. The store can accommodate about 20 people. When you enter the shop, you will find dishes such as tempura and simmered dishes lined up, and you can enjoy fish dishes along with the main seafood bowl. There were various kinds of large shellfish and vinegared dishes in the refrigerator. Since it was my first time here, I ordered a basic seafood bowl and 80 yen miso soup. Most bowls can be eaten within 1000 yen. The specials cost more, but it's still reasonably priced. Needless to say, the freshness of the fish was outstanding. Shrimp, sardines, squid, tuna, hamachi, sea bream, herring roe, conger eel, scallops and lots of ingredients. The bowl is small but overflowing with fish. The rice was warm vinegared rice. Normally, vinegared rice is served cold, but the warm vinegared rice bowl was also quite delicious. The miso soup was delicious with a punchy taste. I will come again. I parked my car at a nearby municipal parking lot (free of charge), headed to the store, and when I wrote in my name, I was the 9th person in the group. I visited the shrine across the street, and when I returned a few minutes before the store opened, there were already a lot of customers there, and they called my name and guided me inside. I managed to enter the store as soon as it opened and ordered both a rice bowl and a seafood bowl. I brought my own boiled pomfret and octopus vinegar. He said he would pay the bill after looking at the plate he had finished eating. All of the ingredients were delicious, but the sea urchin in the rice bowl had a strong taste and aroma, and the squid was very fresh and crunchy. The hamachi in the seafood bowl was also firm and delicious. The seafood bowl may look small, but it's actually quite voluminous. Both are vinegared rice, so use less soy sauce. The ladies at the store were also very kind, and it was a nice store that I'm glad I came to. However, I was surprised at how many types of toppings there were in the ``All Tops Don''😋 Also, it was my first time to eat ``Seafood bowl'' with vinegared rice and a tinned egg on top. I wasn't expecting much since it was a lunch in a tourist area, but I was disappointed in a good way. When I finished eating and left the restaurant, I was surprised to see that the line was even bigger than when it opened. After ordering, when the seafood bowl and conger eel bowl arrived, I was a little surprised at how small the bowls were! (You can grab the bowl from above with a change-up grip) Added conger conger pickled in nanban. You can also order extra miso for 80 yen. I was also looking for the sea bream rice to take home, but I was told it was sold out because they didn't make that many. If you definitely want one, we recommend lining up early. The customer service of the staff member is bright, polite, and leaves a good impression. Iyo Suigun is a laid-back dining spot that serves set menus featuring local seafood like sashimi. Visitors rave about the delicious and reasonably priced set lunches, particularly recommending the taimeishi. The restaurant offers a great view of the sea and boasts professional staff. It's a popular choice for teishoku meals, with ample space and consistently good food. Guests have expressed deep satisfaction with every dish, making it a must-visit for those seeking authentic Japanese cuisine in Imabari.
I went to Imabari for a business trip and searched for good restaurants, I’m glad I found this and tried it during my stay. The view walking towards the restaurant was nice too. I enjoyed the food and the view.

After writing my name and waiting for about 15 minutes, I was guided to a beautiful room with a view of the ocean! When I upgraded the Kurushima set meal's kamameshi to sea bream rice (about 440 yen more), the kamameshi came with fluffy sea bream fillets spread all over the kettle! It was very delicious! Each piece of sashimi was plump and the tempura was soft, making it a great meal! I would like to thank the staff for their prompt service despite their busy schedules. There are quite a few seats, but even though it was lunchtime on a weekday, it was full from the moment it opened, which shows how popular it is. Toll road rest stop
Outdoor Activities
Roadside Station Tatara Shimanami Park is a favored stop for cyclists, boasting scenic views of the Tatara Bridge in addition to numerous souvenir shops and local eateries. This toll road rest stop marks the pinnacle of cycling courses within Japan, spanning 70 kilometers and offering opportunities to interact with dolphins and savor delectable cuisine along the way.
Great place to stop.. It falls somewhat to the middle of the Shimanami Kaido cycling trail. The shrimp burger was tasty.. Don't forget to buy some oranges.. During winter - spring.. They have different variants.

Nice rest stop with a view! Recommend the restaurant with menu from local ingredients and seafoods.

This has always been a great lunch or break stop on the Shimanami route from Onomichi to Imabari. There is a good restaurant with local fish, a nice shop, bathrooms, and facilities for cyclists/cycles. Try the マハタ (mahata or grouper), it is delicious. Update: I visited on a holiday and they were fairly busy. When my order had not arrived after 35 minutes, I had to leave to make the Setoda ferry. Since you now pay in advance, there was no way to cancel my order, so I lost my money and am removing one star. The food is usually pretty good.

Great photo spot. There's also some shop that sells sweet strawberries and oranges. A good, famous cyclist stop called Cyclist' Sanctuary.

Pleasant terrace with grassy area and outdoor table seating with lovely views of the sea, Ikuchijima Island and the 1480m Tatara Bridge. Farmers market with a great selection of local citrus fruits, veggies and other produce. One of the Shimanami rental bike terminals is located here and a lot of cyclists make sure to get a souvenir photo of themselves with the stone monument to the "Cyclists' Sanctuary" and the amusing bike stands in human form. No vegetarian options - although the restaurant should be able to accommodate with some advance notice (a few days). If you are after coffee, opt for the nearby Shimanami Coffee truck that overlooks rest area.

This is the best cycling course in Japan. I would definitely ride my bike again on this 70km course, play with the dolphins, enjoy the delicious food that you can try along the way and the list continues.

Half way between Onomichi and Imabari, perfect place to stop for a meal or refreshment on the Shimanami Kaido cycle trail. Great views of the inland sea and Tatara Bridge and good pic opportunities. Be sure to have some cash.

The final stop, half way through the 7 bridge highway, on the way from Kotahara to Hiroshima, a great scenic spot! Have lunch here, enjoy the view and get closest to the water front! It’s a great break when driving a 300km scenic route, pretty much a whole day affair if one takes the time to admire the scenery along the way! So yes, highly recommended to do a stopover, and from here it’s pretty much 125km to Hiroshima! Enjoy as much as we did on this perfect drivers day!

A tough ride if, like me, you haven't cycled in about 12 years, but infinitely worth it. Justmake sure you bring extra padding for the bike seat designed by the devil himself.
