Mountains
Mount Tanigawa is a picturesque mountain with a summit that stands 1,977 meters high. This peak is renowned for its easy summer trails and challenging winter climbs. The ascent to the summit can be difficult, taking around three hours to complete, but the breathtaking scenery along the way makes it worth the effort. Although weather conditions may sometimes prevent clear views from the top, visitors are still appreciative of their experience and regard it as an awesome hike.
I climb through Nishiguro ridge. the wind was strong and I can't see the trail path because of the clouds. I almost died. never forget that experience

Ski resort
Outdoor Activities
Tanigawadake Tenjindaira is a ski resort situated at a high altitude and known for its powdery snow. It offers stunning views of Mount Tanigawa and opportunities for off-season hiking. The resort's natural snow is excellent, and all courses were open with all lifts operating during the last year's December 29th. Guests don't have to worry about long wait times before the lift as it is swift enough, unlike other ski stations that are slower in service.
Good views from the top of the Rodeway. Cold in winter!

It’s easy riding the Ropeway and the Lift to get to the top of Tenjin Daira, even after the snow melt in April and probably summer and the fall, until the Snow Ground restart in winter again!!

Awesome place to enjoy some powder after heavy snowfall🏂 ⛷️ 💨 Owner- Stop charging only return ropeway fees (3000¥) One way should be only 1200¥ Last time also I went the chairlift closed at 14:30👎

Visited in the middle of September, 2018. It was cold up there! Even raining slightly although the weather forecast said sunny all day. Cost around US$20 two ways, so not so cheap. Parking costs $5 but in the secure building where you buy tickets and find shops, cafes, restaurants and rest rooms. Be prepared for the inclement weather if you stay outside for 10 mins. For hikers and climbers, there are coin lockers, toilets, restaurants, even rooms for change clothing near the rope way station up there. Note that under severe conditions even in May or September, sometimes fatal accident happens every single year here. Listen local guides carefully and read blogs/guidelines by experienced Japanese climber or so.
Kishikawa Tarz — Google review
On one hand, it is beautiful nature, But on the other, it is a hard and unsafe climb in which you can easily slip off the path with no sagety bars as protection. When it is rainy and windy, that is even more dangerous
Daphna Ofek — Google review
This area is probably one of the oldest and the famous mountains in Japan. The level of hiking goes easy to upper medium, depending on the course. There are cable cars that run every three minutes during the day, and ski lifts also run continuously, even in summer. This helps even Japanese senior people to visit near the top of this mountain. In winter, the while area will be covered with deep snow. In summer, we can enjoy semi/sub alpine vegetation. If you are with good hiking legs, you could walk up to the top. There was a shrine on top of the mountain! A very touristy location, so if you are a serious climber, you might skip the cable car and the lift altogether, and hike up from different hiking heads. Bear signs. 🐻

Fun experience. We got to snowboard right before the season ended so the slopes were a little slushy but it was still fun and enjoyable.
Phoua Kue — Google review
Excellent natural snow! All courses were open on December 29, 2019 with all lifts operating. No wait time before the lift. The lifts are swift enough ( in other ski stations they are really slow that your ski time could be eroded tremendously). We enjoyed skiing incessantly. Although it is not a huge mountain, with this place's course settings are great for experienced and semi-experienced skiers and boarders. If you are a early-riser, you can enjoy skiing from 7 AM.

The final station "Tenjindaira" was closed in this season, but the top of the gondola station was awesome! There was a cafeteria with Mountain view. Not so much menu variation but a cup of hot tea was enough for a resting. You can play with snow there!

Nestled in the northern Gunma town of Minakami, the Minakami Kogen Ski Resort offers a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty. (I went here at the end of January this year) Its a really great ski resort. The powder is just too thick, but of course there are plenty of runs for beginners too. One thing they should improve on is the safety of people on the peak and the run on the eastern side; during my stay, there was nearly no visibility and it was hard to see with goggles on. There was only 1 guy patrolling on top and no one to be seen on the eastern side which is extra powdery and flat; I had to walk back to the hotel.

i really don't recommend this place especially for foreigners. Besides their staff cannot communicate in english. ( google translate would help ). The place quite far from tokyo , 3 hours by car. Lots of ski activities to play but only for kids or under limit 40kg who can play ( its only slide and motor rides). The adult all CANNOT play anything. Half of the games they closed and cannot play. Its a wasting to go far just playing snow here. you could find different place nearer to play.

So lovely place for ski beginner. The quality of snow was perfect like powder ! Our girls enjoyed the lesson by coach here. The hotel room is also nice for family too ☺️

Pretty good. The fall foliage and mountain views are beautiful. The rooms seem to have been recently renovated. I like the fact that the rooms don’t have that musty mouldy cigarette smell that you often get with hotels built during the bubble era. The onsen is good, but doesn’t have a sauna which is odd because the resort has full ski and golf facilities.

As a complete beginner to skiing at age 60, I was looked after very well by the ski instructor Nao, who was patient, informative, a happy person and spoke in English, a really big help! We had experience of good snow and not so good over 3 days, all in all a great time!
Lance Mitten — Google review
Good for very young kids (kids play area, tubing slopes, hotel has amenities for kids). The room itself wasn't super kid friendly but with a little care it's okay. The slopes are quite limited but there's a good range of levels. Hotel restaurant is okay - the buffet tries and mostly succeeds, while the curry shop has a few options (but somehow misses a few staple ski foods!).

One of the staff down at the skii rental who was male was rude as my partner and I did not speak Japanese and wanted some help with the forms he looked at us like a deer in headlights and palmed us off to another staff member therefore I had to minus 2 star. At the end of the day customer service reflects the business, they offered English skii classes but the price was too steep. The skii slopes itself was great for adults and especially young children. The room had a gorgeous view of the snowy mountains and slopes. The buffet for lunch and dinner was very average but had great views.

I was very interested in going to this temple because of its connection to the Japanese mythological tengu. They apparently have the biggest tengu mask in Japan! Even though it's in a pretty mountainside setting and the main buildings are old and atmospheric, it felt very touristy even though the temple had obviously seen better days. In particular, the priest that did the calligraphy in my temple collection book (admittedly a money-making scheme) acted like he'd rather be doing anything else. I still would recommend a visit if in the area, hope the experience is better …

However, there are some things that you can't see unless you pass there, so I'd like to climb someday. Kasaba is located approximately 16 km north of Numata city center in a deep mountain valley connected to the Buson mountain range. In the spring, you can enjoy fresh greenery, in the summer you can hear the voice of the sacred bird "Buddhist monk", in the autumn you can enjoy the autumn leaves on the whole mountain, and in the winter you can enjoy the white snow surrounding the area. I'll cover it. Mirokuji Temple was founded in 848. At the request of Emperor Kanmu's son, Imperial Prince Kuzuhara, he invited Jikaku Daishi, head of the Tendai sect at Hieizan, and became the first generation. In 1456, he was converted to the Soto sect, and was awarded a goshuin seal of 100,000 koku (100,000 koku) as a place of prayer for the first Tokugawa shogun. It is a historic temple that has been granted the formal status of stone. The first year I visited Mt. Kasaba, I borrowed a tengu mask from Nakamine-do, took the borrowed mask with me on my next visit, bought a new one at the shop in front of the temple, and delivered it to the temple. It has become a custom to borrow a mask. In addition, the shrine in the inner hall of Nakamine-do in Mirokuji Temple is opened once every 10 years, and you can worship the deity there. I went on November 8, 2023. Autumn leaves🍁 It felt like it was almost over. I can see that this is a sacred place in the mountain itself 👍️ It's quite a mountain road, but it's one-way so it's easy to get there (there's no passing each other) The parking lot is spacious and there is a restroom 🚻 I came here around noon, but until I got here... There were no places to eat, there were only apple orchards, but there was one (a soba restaurant) at the entrance to the temple, and a restaurant (with soba) that was famous for curry udon at the opposite exit. It's difficult to walk because it's overgrown with weeds, perhaps because not many people pass by, but it's recommended for those who like quiet, wild roads. On the way, I was threatened by bees and my leg was bitten by a leech for the first time, so I recommend you to wear appropriate equipment. (Translated by Google) First visit on October 31, 2023. According to reviews I had read beforehand, the road leading to the temple was narrow and crooked and dangerous, but since it was a one-way street and the road was about 2.5m wide, I didn't worry about it at all. There is a large parking lot and public toilets🚻. If you go up the slope from the back right of the parking lot, you will arrive in front of the main hall. Actually, I think the official route is to go up the stairs further to the left, so I plan to at least go down those stairs on my way home. After purifying both hands at the water store, I headed towards the shrine, where I saw a large Tengu mask on display. The shrine grounds are in full bloom with autumn leaves. I went through the Nakajakumon gate to get to Kashabado, but as expected, I didn't go to Oshodai. After all, you have to climb the animal trail for about 30 to 40 minutes, so you'll probably see bears. When we got back to the parking lot, our car was the only one there. I wonder if it will be packed with people when it opens in two years.

A very nice ski resort located in 2 hours derive from Tokyo. Pretty cool courses including for both beginners and pro ski and snowboard lovers! Not so far from the toll road and easy access. Several car parking lots located at a walk distance and isolated as well. All isolated parking lots providing a free shuttle bus. Better to go there as early as possible to avoid shuttle bus in order to have an easy and quick access from the closes parking. Very comfortable facility includes wide eating area and several restaurants inside and outside the building. Rental shops could allow you to get and ride at the same day all you need including wears and ski or boards. For those with kids, there is kids school facility with a very kids friendly instructors. Will allow you to get your kids attended to school and enjoy your free time for adult riding. Nice weather, good mood and friendly staff are always there! Recommended very much!

We stayed here for our honeymoon, and we couldn't have chosen a better ryokan. We booked a room with an open-air private bath. The room was very spacious. The outdoor bath area was private, yet not cramped. Service was phenomenal, despite the staff not speaking much English. Above all, we loved the food: everything was fresh, interesting, delicious and beautifully plated. What's more, they offer complimentary snacks, like popsicles, and beverages, including sparkling wine and sake, in a shared space. I highly recommend Syoubun to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, relax and be pampered.

Good experience. I got the room with open-air bath with two beds but we prefer futons(Japanese style bed) instead. The room here quite big compared to normal Japanese inn room in Japan. They have parking just right in the front but need to be careful ,you might drive pass it very easily since it is no sign in English at all. Anyway we made it there. All the staffs are friendly. They could speak a little bit of English but good enough for simple communication. Only wish the food could be better. And they served dinner at the private room downstairs, no in room diner. For breakfast is more into family style nor buffet or Kaiseiki set. Food is mountain cuisine so you can expect mushrooms and wild boar. Check out at 10-11 am.

(Translated by Google) As the reputation suggests, it was a wonderful stay. The Minamiyaku staff was very courteous from the pick-up and drop-off, and upon arrival, they carried my luggage to my room during the check-in process. All the staff were polite and the young foreign trainees were also working hard. The room was clean and comfortable. The temperature of the semi-open-air bath in the room was so perfect that I felt like I could stay in it for hours. However, the washing area is outside, so be prepared for it to be as cold as the training in winter when it snows. If it's too cold, a private bath is a good idea. It was a three-day holiday, but the private bath was surprisingly empty. All the dishes were delicious and filling. I couldn't finish the last cooked rice, but I made it into a rice ball and took it home. I was happy. In the lounge, you can enjoy unlimited alcohol (sake, sparkling wine, etc.) and soft drinks until a certain time. You can also enjoy all-you-can-eat ice cream after taking a bath. It gets crowded at different times, but we don't stay that long, so we take turns using it. There are also a lot of popular manga, which you can borrow and read in your room. It was a happy discovery that I was able to stay at a good inn for the first time in a while. thank you very much.

Pizza restaurant
Stone Oven Pizza La Bier is a fantastic establishment that specializes in hand-crafted, genuine stone oven pizzas. Their pizzas are topped with exceptional mozzarella cheese and offer a wide range of options such as the Quatro Fromage and Genovese varieties. The ingredients used are of high quality, ensuring a delightful dining experience. This cozy restaurant also provides an impressive selection of beverages to complement their delicious creations. However, it is worth noting that parking spaces may be limited.
My partner and I walked up a minute before closing due to a train delay, fully expecting the restaurant to turn us away, and the staff VERY kindly let us place a takeaway order. (I think they saw how sad we were to have come all that way and not get their raved-about pizza!) The pizza lived up to the hype. Delicious salty crust, a perfectly sweet and fresh tomato sauce, and good mozzarella cheese. We would love to go back if we have the chance. As good as any highly-reviewed pizza we've had in Tokyo!

Incredibly delicious hot and fresh pizza cooked in a brick oven! I was so surprised to find yet another amazing restaurant in Minakami and was so blown away but the quality of the food, service, and rustic-style atmosphere. It's better to order your own pizza since the sizes are meant to be like personal pizzas. They also had a seasonal Christmas pizza and adorable Christmas decorations. But no matter the time of year, definitely give this place a visit while in Minakami!

Quaint n cosy cafe. The pizzas were amazingly fluff and yummy ! The plain pizza just right with sprinkling of salt. Margarita just right in the tomato sauce not overpowering.

Excellent pizza spot in Minakami. Hand-made personal pizza cooked in a stone oven. Variety of delicious meat and veggie pizza, Japanese beers on tap, and local beers in a bottle. I highly recommend the mushroom + garlic and the seafood pizzas!
John Ambert — Google review
Great vegetarian pizzas. Lots of choice. We recommend the vegetable pizza and the spicy mushroom pizza, very tasty. Only improvement would be a more crisp base of the pizza. But definitely recommend.

Unbelievable find of a pizzeria in Minakami. The pizza we ordered is delicious, hot, made with fresh ingredients, and value for money at about 1200yen for a 9 inch pizza. Very friendly and helpful staff too.

Excellent pizza and a surprising find in the rural Minakami. Service is always great and the pizza delivers every time. Highly recommend the vegetable option, as well as the prosciutto ham one.

Be aware that this is definitely not an English friendly place. Of course there is no reason why it should be, but you will need a Japanese reader and speaker with you. If you arrive at a busy time you will need to take a number. This is the first trick. The number machine is by the cash register and basically invisible when there are lines for the shop and the diner. It works with a web app but when we were there the number shown on the app was not related to the number on our ticket! You are going to wait for a very very long time. The place has always been popular and since it was on TV it is doubly so. Be prepared to wait well over an hour in a very small space being buffeted by people passing Do, is it worth it? No. The food quality is not up to the hype and it’s expensive, though you do get a lot on the plate. Once you do finally get to a table you are hurried through the order process. Not fun.

Western restaurant
The dining experience at Asima Restaurant was exceptional, with a unique twist on curry dishes presented in a gratin form. The combination of flavors created the perfect fusion of culinary delights. Additionally, patrons have the option to order a larger portion for just a slight increase in price. Conversations with the restaurant's owners added to the overall enjoyment of the visit, as they were hospitable and accommodating towards foreigners.
We were pleasantly surprised they were open between traditional lunch and dinner hours, so we were able to enjoy a late lunch around 3:00 P.M. the food was very good, and portions were filling while allowing the opportunity for dessert. I recommend the apple crumble.

Incredible meal!!!👍 I had never tried curry in "gratin" form before! It was the best of both worlds! 🤗💖 And you can order a "big version" of it too for just a little more! ;)🙏 My favorite part was talking to the couple who owned the place 😍Thank you for being kind to the Shibukawa foreigners <3 We'll be back soon!

桂来, a yakiniku restaurant, offers high-quality A3 beef that is regarded as excellent. They show great flexibility by accommodating customers even when it's close to the last order time. The assortment of namuru pickles stands out as particularly well-prepared. Along with delicious food, they provide an English menu for convenience. The service is exceptional and the cozy ambiance adds to the overall experience.
Amazing food, everything is delicious, great service. Definitely worth going !!! Loved it.

One of the very few eating places in this part of Minakami. Ordered beef tongue and a cut of beef seasoned with ginger. They have a selection of korean dishes as well, such as kimchi (side order), korean pancakes and stews. A little pricey for the amount of meat provided. Good place to warm up if coming during colder months.

Pretty good for A3 beef. It was 10 minutes till last order, but they accommodated me well. The namuru pickles assortment was especially well prepared.

Came across this restaurant while searching for a lunch spot. Food quality is ok. Service is average as the waiter impressed ypon us that he is impatient and was toward closing time when we came in.
