This is one of my favourite places on the planet. ABSOLUTELY worth the day trip from either Kyoto or Otsu. If you're capable too, this was one of the best hikes of my life. Just make sure you go early so the sun doesn't set when you're up there.

Came up here 2 years ago while on Holidays and did not regret the time it took to get here. If you go off the main tourist site you can come across some Buddhist temples, which are beautiful to look at and still in use. If you're looking for a neat gift or statue for home before you go, you can purchase a Tonooki Statue for around 2000 to 3000 yen wrapped up to stow on the plane back home.

Ropeways and hiking trails with great views, a short ride from Kyoto

Mount Hiei, situated near Kyoto and Shiga in Japan, is a majestic mountain renowned for its cultural and spiritual significance. I walked up from Shugakin station. Around 2.5 hours up and down. The trail is well maintained and signposted in English. It starts in deciduous forest and gives way to beautiful Canadian style conifers higher up. Views across Kyoto from 2/3rd of the way up are outstanding on clear day. To be honest above the ropeway the path turns to a tarmac road and the touristy stuff up top. So if you’re not bothered about conquering the mountain itself, I’d stop at the viewpoint and just enjoy the nature.

For me, this mountain is too ordinary. The cable car ride was a bad experience as it was very crowded like a bus ride. The cable car is designed like this, which is very strange. I think the cable car should be for two, four, or even six people to ride together, rather than dozens of people crowded together to ride the cable car... The scenery on the mountain is also very ordinary. In short, I think there is no need to make a special trip here... Absolutely beautiful!! We took the cable car and rope car up, went to the summit, walked round to a beautiful temple through the woods, and then walked half way down and took the cable car back to the bottom. A wonderful day out in Japanese nature, very good for the soul 🥰

Decided to walk up and catch the cable car back. I started the hike from the trailhead near sakamoto-hieizanguchi station and it was pretty nice. Not overly trafficked which added to the charm I think. Took about 3ish hours. The temples at the top are gorgeous, a little expensive to get in but I guess it was worth it, maybe it's just because I've been Kyoto for a bit but they all start to look the same after a while. However trying to get back down was more trouble than it should have been. I wanted to catch the Eizan cable car so I could see the other side of the mountain but for the life of me I couldn't find it, I feel like I walked around for almost an hour and couldn't find it. So I settled on the Heizan on the same side of the mountain I walked up. I'm probably just blind and it was right in front of me I thoroughly enjoyed the hike though.

Wonderful Tendi Temple complex....an experience that you should make the time to enjoy when visiting Japan

Panorama is great and the temple is beautiful. The cable car and the other transports are expensive. Overall it is a nice place worth for a visit!

I went there in the mid of december. We hiked to the ropeway station and then took the ropeway to the top. I liked the natural paths and the challenging sloop. When reaching the mountains top I normally expect a nice view, but there is no real viewpoint and it was foggy. + challenging hiking course - no real view point on top

It is an entrance-fee-free shrine, with rather contemporary religious/ shrine building structure. Outside the Shrine, there is a quasi-forest style yard which can be attractive for sunny weather, although it can be somewhat dark in the cloudy weather because it has so many tall trees. Inside the Shrine, the pebble stone floor is well maintained for being Zen-style yard, although visitors may not sense its beauty and just step on it. The Shrine is famous for the religious praying and celebration of new baby at age 1 and, then, age 3, 5, and 7. That is the reason why many parents would bring their babies and young child/children to the Shrine for the religious service.

Large impressive shrine found near Lake Biwako. There is also a clock museum here which I did not visit.

It seems to be a little away from JR Kosai Line, but you can walk from Otsukyo Station without having to change to Keihan Electric Railway Ishiyama Saka Main Line. This is the stage of the manga karuta tournament called "Chayahayafuru", and such a tournament actually exists. The large gate in front of the main hall has a bright red color, which has an impact that can be remembered intensely. If you look at the building carefully, many wooden parts are combined in a very complex way, and you are overwhelmed by its beauty. These buildings are designated as national registered tangible cultural property, so it is understandable. As I see the cherry blossom mark when I look at the cloth hanging from the gate, I think that it is a famous cherry blossom spot here. I want to come here again when the cherry blossoms bloom.

Visiting Omi Jing was a wonderful and peaceful experience. Pretty easy to get to from the subways from Kyoto. A great tranquil area away from crowds closer to Kyoto. I was the only one there other than a couple Japanese visitors early in the morning. There were charms and a goshuin too and a beautiful Japanese style garden. Of course I also wanted to visit the Omi Kangakukan and I enjoyed the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu displays. A great stop for any Chihayafuru and or Karuta fan!

Ohmi Jingu Shrine is a place that defies emotional understanding unless you have actually been there. Words are relatively easy to convey and can be used to convey more simplistic emotions, but what words can convey an emotional context that I have never experienced but yet will forever change me in ways I have yet to fully understand.

We visit this shrine last time for the first visit or (Hatsunode) The japanese tradition. Even though there’s a fear to the corona virus people,locals are falling in line others forgetting the social distances to each other because the shrine is crowded.

A beautiful place. I went there one Monday morning and there were only a few people around. Nice if you want to see a nice temple away from the crowds of central Kyoto.

Underrated secret, very quiet and serene beautiful walk through the forest before. Not busy when I went. A must place for karuta fans or chihayafuru. You definitely feel like the characters when you are looking up those stairs.

Beautiful shrine worth exploring

i paid 2200 yen for a disposable plate of beef scraps with mediocre tasting stew and a tiny piece of bread. the staff were nice, but this amount of food is unable to feed a small child. also the sandwiches were cold. in winter. who eats cold sandwiches in winter.

Great view , good place for photo taking or even to propose to someone here. The outside area is v beautiful. The cafe you need to pay extra for the good view but it’s worth it coz the seats are different. Food is ok . It’s definitely a little expensive to come up here coz the ropeway cost few k yen already. A nice place if u have time and dun mind to pay. Winter season open 21 dec for 2019 but not snowing yet .

Amazing views of the lake. I didn't bother to stand in line for the restaurant, but settled for the coffee and curry bread. Recommend doing the zip lining too!

Maybe I was expecting too much from this mountain temple, but I found it underwhelming. There's not much to see, and what there is is sprawled out in a relatively large are, which is not particularly interesting. There were zero explanations in English. I think it can be a good place for a spiritual retreat (there's a hotel on-site), rather than tourism. Unlike many other temple sites, I won't feel the need to visit it again. But the way up from Yase-Hieizanguchi and the way down towards Sakamoto were nice, as well as the forest all around it.

The surrounding temples of the temple complex are beautiful and it is a great hike from the first cable car (not taking the rope way) of about an hour if you take your time. Unfortunately, the main temple is under construction and there is absolutely nothing to see there. The other temples were wonderful though and made up for the hike.

Take Cable car from yase to hiei (cost 900yen). From here you can see the top view and can enter the garden. Then walk down from hiei to enryoji about 1.30 km, the view is so nice. Then you can take the bus to the ground

I wouldn’t recommend this place to foreign tourists! An old man who was selling tickets were very rude and yelled at me because I asked a question how to go downhill without a cable car because a map wasn’t clear. It’s a first time behaviour like this in Japan. I was really tired and I feel that that place only commercial. Don’t waste your time!!! Go to another place. I added a map for people who also tired and stuck there and want just walk and explore the place.

Located in Hieizan, one of the most sacred mountains in Japan. This temple is very significant especially in the history of Japan. Main hall is under renovation but visitors can still enter. I am in awe how structures from its founding in 788 are still present, and how they try to preserve the originalsl structures and artifacts. Visited during autumn of 2023 and the surrounding nature scenery was really beautiful.

The grounds are lovely to walk around as the temples are set up a mountain in the forest overlooking the lake. You will see more spectacular temples that these, but it's an enjoyable place to get away from the crowds.

Spectacular views from the top of Hieizan! But if you're visiting in the winter, make sure you've got the right kind of shoes, the roads will be iced over and extremely slippery! Still an amazing experience though!

Get ti enjoy some autumn colours here while i was there. Very well liked by the elderly, huge area to explore and expose in the religion in another country. Really interesting to see the similarities and differences of japanese buddism.

Absolutely amazing place. I met and talked with a couple of the Monk's, and they made me feel completely at peace. They also complimented me about my Ora. I actually felt like I had arrived home. Unusually, my eyes started sweating (😢🤭) from the overwhelming emotions I felt being here. Thank you to all the monks (male and female) who made my experience and trip, a life changing moment. What a holy place it is. Enryakuji is not one temple but temple complex around Mt. Hiei. The main one is under renovation but you can see inside and roofs as well which usually you can’t see. During my visit, I knew about the two hardest ancient practice there, one is the 1000 day 'Kaihogyo' which is circling the mountain 20km~ per day and other is 12 years training alone in Mt. Hiei, and both have been kept alive by the monks. That’s too impressive and unbelievable.

To get to this place you will have to drive up Mount Hiei North East of Kyoto. This incredible complex is a 45 min drive to 3 historical areas; Todo, Saito, and Yokawa areas. Each are a short distance drive from the next. There are tolls up the mountain, total cost is approximately 2000 Yen. Each area costs approximately 500 to 1000 yen per person to enter and parking is free. Enryakuji, the birthplace of Buddhism in Japan where many monks trained. It was also a famous battle site during the late 1500 civil war of Japan due to its strategic location from Kyoto City. The site is remembered for many things amongst which was the famous massacre of 1571 by warlord Oda Nobunaga. The views of the city on the way up are incredible during the fall, so stop by in the rest areas up or down Mount Hiei.

Best way to get here is by the Eizan Railway and then Cable Car/Rope Way and then walk 2km around and down the mountain. If you can't face the walk back up, then you can a bus back to Kyoto. Well worth the effort (and the ¥1,000 entry price) to see the temple that is being painstakingly restored.

I ate Joe-Kinshi-Don. I enjoyed traditional Japanese food and garden.

My wife and I came to Kyoto for our honeymoon! We had heard about this place through Simon and Martina's review about Omi Beef! We had such a great experience here, the food was excellent, the beef was flavorful and juicy, and the waitstaff was very welcoming and very sweet (they took photos for us, answered our questions, and printed a commemorative photo for us; how wonderful is that?!) The service and facilities are top notch; we will definitely be coming back everytime we visit Kyoto!
