Funchal

With a picturesque harbor framed by a rugged mountain backdrop, Funchal is the largest city and capital of Portugal’s Madeira region. The city offers a variety of historical and cultural attractions, including a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A meandering promenade lined with palm trees, restaurants, and cafes winds through the old town, which is filled with colorful buildings and shops. Summer is the best time to visit, when the weather is warm enough to go for a swim in the ocean.

Gardens
The Botanical Garden of Madeira is a well-known tourist attraction on the island with an extensive collection of plants from around the world. The garden has beautiful views of the landscape as well as a glasshouse that features tropical plants from all over the world.
Beautiful way to spend a day in Madeira. There’s so many flowers blooming, different areas dedicated to different species. If you love flowers you won’t be disappointed here. Even if you’ve been there before you will see something new on your next trip as we did. Not all flowers bloom at the same time of year so there will be something new every time you go. They also have a great cafe for food and drinks with an amazing view. No complaints here. Just all out natural beauty.
Jaki Nunez — Google review
Lovely garden, in need of a little better upkeep in places, possibly a hangover from the pandemic. The cacti are spectacular, however, and it's worth a visit for these alone. Great city views and a couple of good cafes for a spot of lunch. There's a minimum spend for card so have some cash handy if you just want a drink.
Ruth Turner — Google review
Worth a visit, especially if you are into plants and flowers. Was surprised by the variety of plants. There is a pond with turtles on the lower level of the Botanical garden, as well as toilets near the pond. Took us around 2 hours without transfers with funiculars. Do not forget to visit a Tropical garden nearby. In my opinion much more lovely! Plan around 2-3 hours for Tropical garden as well. You can buy tickets to Botanical garden together with tickets for funiculars and save some money.
Denis Starynin — Google review
Wonderful and well maintained botanical garden, we had a great time, basically it was giving a really diverse experience. Definitely worth visiting! On the contrary, at the coffee bar, the food is not really tasty despite of the high prices - so I recommend to avoid it, and maybe grab something more delicious outside the botanical garden.
János Tamas Gelesz — Google review
Garden is pretty enough to kill some time in Funchal and offer a decent view of the city below. We accessed via cable car. Visited in January so potentially not as many flowers this time of year. Mostly enjoyed the gardens but you'd be fine to skip it too and just do cable cars.
E — Google review
The variety of plants here is amazing. Takes about 2 hours to go around and see everything. Not suitable for the disabled and saw some people with prams/pushchairs/strollers struggling in some areas. Good value for money (€7.50 adult entrance). Bus 29 and 31a go past the entrance.
Rachel Peat — Google review
On a hill above Funchal, we travelled up on the cable car. Very scenic. It was busy at the bottom, I would suggest trying to get there early to vent the crowds. The gardens are lovely and it's a quiet location. Great views and there is a cafe overlooking Funchal.
Chris H — Google review
A really enjoyable place to walk around, with some fantastic flowers and plants on display. It is very hilly (as with most things on Madeira!), but worth it. I bought the combi ticket (both cable cars plus Botanical Garden) which I thought was good value for money.
Daniel Taylor — Google review
Really nice botanical gardens, filled with a huge variety of flora. The views down the hill into Funchal centre are spectacular. You can either drive up to the gardens, get a taxi, local bus ( bus stop outside the lower entrance) or like us come up the main cable car, exit out to the right at the top then walk down to the botanical cable car and then into the gardens at the top end. ( this was €36 return for the main cable car and €22.80, including botanical garden entry fee, return, for the garden cable car, pay for these at the cable car, prices correct as of Nov. 2023 and based on two people) However, if you are infirm or struggle with hills, you might find the walk from cable car to cable car a bit of an ordeal, definitely not suitable for wheelchair users. The gardens have a cafe and toilets. In the garden are a wide variety of plants, a small museum, souvenir shops and a hot house ( which was shut during our visit). Even though November is considered winter here (24°!) Most of the plants were at the end of their season, so there are not many flowers, spring and summer are the best season for these. Having said that, there was still plenty to see. Be careful of the footpaths, and yes, the gardens are on a hill, so you will be walking downhill/uphill throughout your visit. There is a large pond with fish in it and smaller pools with floating plants on them, so beware, do not stand or let children near these as they look like solid ground but do contain water.

What a beautiful place to hang out. I took a bottle of wine and a book. Amazing views of the harbour and the valley. Well manicured and managed. A lovely marine collection too. A bargain and well worth a visit. Would be awesome if they had a monthly or annual card so that I could afford to visit more often. Thank you for this piece of peace and tranquility 🌴♥️

This place is nice if you’re a plant lover. It’s not the best botanical garden I’ve visited but does have a wonderful and diverse amount of citations and plants. The cactus garden is the most spectacular one to see. There’s a few cafes and the cable cart that goes up to the mountains. Be prepared to have your best walking shoes and to be walking a lot up hill.
Rosana Eats — Google review
The gardens are lovely, not quite as much drama as Monte but they are beautiful and much more educational. It looks like they are slowly redesigning areas and those look especially good. I saw some comments about weeding, and in some beds yer there were a few weeds but it was still much better than my garden! Entry was much cheaper than Monte and the variety of plants was really impressive, definitely worth a visit!
Alistair Mason — Google review
Nice garden, but if you’re not a huge fan of flowers or don’t have enough time, it’s not a must-see in Funchal in my opinion. Also, it’s quite hard to get there from Funchal – you’re gonna need a car or a taxi.
Laa McDonald — Google review
Beautiful! One of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have seen. Relatively small, but very well cared. I do like the part where you can see the fossils from Madeira, some kind of little museum in old building. There are plenty of viewpoints on the area as well as places with refreshments. Strongly recommend 😀
Kas Tu — Google review
Very nice botanical gardens. You can find inside so many many special of plants. Beautiful and very knowledgeable. Fee for entry is just 7,50€ and you can also get to viewpoints and look at city from above. Worth to visit. I am not mentioning adrenaline ride up here by bus 😌 perfect experience. Inside the areal are toilets and small buffet.
Marek Hajdučák — Google review
You can reach the gardens by bus which stops outside or by car where there are car parking spaces outside. The gardens open at 9am and cost approximately €8 per person. You will need 2 hours to visit. There are lots of ups and downs. There is a cafe on site. It is reasonably priced. The service was slow and could be more welcoming. There are toilets in different parts of the gardens. We were hoping to take the cable car to Monte Gardens, but it was not running the day we went.
Lynn Higgins — Google review
A fantastic garden up in the hills of Funchal. There was so much variety and plenty of room to spread out. I particularly enjoyed the cactus plants, the turtles and those views. Quite tricky to get around if your mobility isn't good. We bought a ticket which includes the cable car to Monte. The cafe was delightful with good prices and great views.
Debs Middleton — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! Take the cable car, don’t walk like we did 😂 stop at the cafe for a croissant, poncha, views, and maybe a meet and greet with the garden cats!
Berlyn Lee — Google review
Very good but small. We expected it to be bigger. If you visit Monte Palace go to the Botanical garden first.

Lovely, tranquil place to spend some time. Beautiful displays and was quiet when we visited (January) but I suspect it gets very busy in the summer! Highly recommended though...👍

Spectacular view from a blooming Gallery. Nice experience for nature lovers. I surely recommend this for a half a day visit if you ate in Madeira. A full day can be used to visit Monte And a Cable car experience

Specialty Museums
The CR7 Museum is a must-see for any football fan and an important pilgrimage site for admirers of Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. It houses a vast collection of trophies, medals and other memorabilia from the Cristiano Ronaldo's glittering career, including letters from around the world.
For the CR7's fans place "must to see". But in my opinion if you have another football idol, or maybe you're not interested in this sport - believe me - after visiting this place you'll change your mind. Aby w pełni zrozumieć fenomen Christiano należy poznać historię jego życia. Zachęcam do odwiedzin!
Kaehtan — Google review
🏟️ I recommend it to everyone in Funchal! ⚽️ Not only for CR7 fans I would recommend this place. The moment you enter the museum (€5 cash entry), you soak up the atmosphere of all that he accomplished, the trophies he won and how the boy from Madeira became a legend. You'll see videos from each stage of his career, trophies across clubs, as well as historical artefacts, commemorative coins and more. The complex also includes a wine shop, hotel and other things. The place is in a good location by the beach and close to the centre of Funchal.
Vojt?ch Pres — Google review
I’m not a big fan of CR and in general of football but I was present surprised. It's a popular destination for football fans and tourists interested in learning more about his life and career. The museum showcases various memorabilia, trophies, and personal items related to Cristiano Ronaldo's achievements in football. Shows what a one man can reach. Totally impressive. And a price of 5 euros per person sounds like a good deal for the experience.
Jallouf Kim — Google review
Interesting museum with golden shoes, balls, shirts, videos of Ronaldo's best moments. Whether you're a fan of the player or not, it's worth watching.
ΧΡΗΣΤΟΣ ΧΡ — Google review
My wife put it like this how can a man be so talented and dedicated to his craft and be good looking at the same time great museum the boy must have one hell of a trophy 🏆 cabinet at home great to see these trophies up close a must for any sports fan thank you Mike
Michael Barratt — Google review
Even though I'm not a big football fan, Cristiano's Ronaldo museum looks pretty awesome to me. I guess everything he ever won it's displayed there. The entrance tax is 5 euro. There is a fan shop available too. You don't have to pay the 5 euro tax to enter the fan shop. Prices are fair I'd say. 30 euro a CR7 t-shirt (looks pretty unique to me).
adi coman — Google review
This is one of the most interesting places on the island, especially if you are a football fan! You can see up close just about all the awards he has won individually but also with his teams and the national team of Portugal. Some of the early memories while still playing in Portugal are on display and a full size statue of chocolate. It's a must see! Entry ticked is just 5 Euros!
Mircea C — Google review
4 stars because I was expecting more from this place. Man of his stature needs to have a bigger museum especially in his place of birth. With that being said whatever was there his awards, trophies and other signed artifacts were really well kept.
Abdulla Sheikh — Google review
I'm not a big fan of Ronaldo but I was in Madeira and went for the experience. It is very shiny and a lot of bling but then Ronaldo is flamboyant. It exhibits a replica of pretty much every single honour Christiano Ronaldo has won and you can't take it away from him, he has won pretty much EVERYTHING that could be won in club football. The entrance fee was pretty reasonable but for a guy who has done all of this he should make it FREE for under 16's and native Madeirans
Rob Dickson — Google review
Visiting CR7 Museum while enjoying your trip to Madeira is a MUST ! I am not particularly fan of Football but it’s such an inspiring place ! When you visit his museum you can understand many things about his personality, his history and his relations with Madeira. I liked the fact that this sport guy won mostly everything and you can feel that he’s a hard working person ! The entry cost is about 5€ per adult There is only one (down) floor to visit but if you are a fan of football you gonna definitely enjoy your time there as this place is full of history. There is a small shop where you can buy some goodies from the museum and Cristiano ! Enjoy !
Adel Seddiki — Google review
CR7 could keep all his medals locked way instead his museum has all the trophies, medals for club and country not to mention all the individual awards. Dotted around are shirts that are of significance along with hat trick balls and custom boots. The gift shop is small and I would say reasonably priced for the items. 5 euro entry which is not bad at all.
Joel Figueira — Google review
Nice museum with all of CR’s trophy’s! One floor exposition. Nothing more nothing less. Worth the price but don’t plan on spending more than 45 minutes here.
Robert Dias — Google review
Christiano Ronaldo Museum. You don't have to wait long for admission. There is a shop with CR7 products and a restaurant on site. The museum itself contains jerseys, trophies and medals won during his career. Of course, most of them are replicas. The tour shouldn't take more than an hour.
Łukasz J — Google review
I had the opportunity to visit the CR7 Museum in 2022, and I was pleasantly surprised that the entry fee was only 5 euros, payable in cash. This made the experience even more enjoyable, as I got to explore the impressive exhibits and learn about Cristiano Ronaldo's journey without breaking the bank. The accessibility of the museum and its reasonable pricing only added to the overall positive impression I had of this remarkable attraction.
Susana Magalhães — Google review
The entrance fee is €5.-.When you are a football fan it’s absolutely worth to visit even when you are not a Ronaldo fan. The collection of cups is amazing.

The trophies, the scores, everything in the museum was awesome! I recommend going there, in Madeira because you can really enjoy yourself there. Thank you for such a great visit. The whole museum filled my heart with joy!

It’s unbelievable what CR7 has achieved. This museum it’s truly a gem with all the trophies and medals and his history. There’s so many awards it’s hard to keep up. Magical place for the best player in the world. Dream come true.

The CR7 Cristiano Ronaldo museum in Funchal (Madeira) is well worth a visit if you're in the area. Not the biggest museum, but full of trophies, football shirts, medals and memorabilia all from one of the worlds best football players. The entry cost was €5.

Great place in Portugal 🇵🇹. If you are fan of football and Ronaldo you must have to visit here. 5 euro for entrance.
Travel With Seafarer — Google review
The first pages of Cristiano Ronaldo's story, now followed by millions of people around the world, were written in the streets of Madeira. That's why the football star chose his hometown of Funchal to set up the CR7 Museum: a place where his career is presented. The exhibition area, which opened on December 15, 2013, is 400 m². There, visitors can admire some of the most famous trophies from the footballer's career.

Santa Catarina Park is a spacious garden-like park in Madeira, featuring a variety of trees, flower beds, and walkways. Visitors can enjoy picnics by the lake while children have fun at the playground or feed ducks and swans. The park offers stunning views of Funchal Bay and provides a playroom for kids to engage in activities. Additionally, renting a bicycle to explore the large park or Funchal is an option.
Wonderful elevated park with views over Funcal City and harbour. As always over the last 20 years, beautiful gardens with flowers in every season. Lake with swans and muscovado ducks. Benches and shady trees. Currently a lovely sculpture trail is displayed with explanation board. Music events are held here at different times with a natural sloping grass arena to the stage set below. It's a place for everyone to enjoy.

Nice park in the city centre of Funchal. Full of flowers, trees, lizards, birds, butterflies etc. Park is very well kept, very clean. Public toilet, two places where you can drink tea, poncha or coffee. Many benches where you can sit and admire the landscape/nature. Good view for the port. I like this place.
Anna Rokitowska — Google review
A very beautiful and large park where you can see the paradise flowers and some tropical flowers, plants and cactus trees. There is also a small snack in which you can taste the poncha and eat. The park also overlooks the Cristiano Ronaldo Museum and the sea. There is also a place designated for children to play safely. When walking there, I enjoy every moment.

A lovely park which we walked through on our way into central Funchal on most days. The park was very picturesque with gardeners tidying and cleaning up the beds & planting new plants. There's a cafe here and also some old vehicles which were of interest to my husband. A nice place to stroll through and enjoy the sunshine

Santa Catarina Park is a lovely green oasis in the heart of Funchal, perfect for a relaxing stroll or a picnic. The park is well-maintained and features lush gardens, colorful flowers, and tall trees. There are also several benches and shaded areas throughout the park where you can sit and enjoy the view. A BEAUTIFUL HAVEN IN FUNCHAL! On a blisteringly hot day I wandered into this park essentially to escape the direct sunlight. I had no previous knowledge of it but found it to be absolutely beautiful. It was well laid out and full of stunning trees, shrubs and flowers. The water features were bordered with multicoloured floral displays and abundant wildfowl. There were plenty of shaded places to escape the heat, it had nice clean toilets and fabulous viewpoints over Funchal City and the enormous marina port. I particularly liked the little lizards, which were initially a bit skittish until I started to feed them banana ( I had read that they ate any unharvested ones that dropped to the ground on the island). All in all a fantastic escape from the hustle and bustle of town life. Like most things in Madeira though, there are gradients in the park, but the paths are good with plenty of stopping places and I would definitely recommend a visit.

This is a lovely park on an elevated site at the end of one of the main streets of Funchal. It has a lot of lizards which the kids enjoyed spotting and chasing :) It also has ducks and swans. It has wide open greenspaces too ideal for a picnic. It is a quiet place with lots of interesting flora.

Gardens but not just gardens. From the funicular, they develop all downhill and on one side there is a good view of the carros de cesto. There are different tropical species of plants and big parts of constructions have Asiatic influence surrounded with Portuguese history and azulejos. A good mix of things.

The Bay of Funchal is one of the most famous visiting cards of the Madeira archipelago. Its beauty is undeniable, whether you enjoy it from the sea or from the island itself. Santa Catarina Park is one of the most beautiful places to view them. Located between Avenida do Infante and Avenida Sá Carneiro, overlooking the port of Funchal, Santa Catarina Park has an area of 36,000 m². It is one of the most visited green spaces in the Madeiran capital and not just because of its central location. Here visitors will find a large lawn surrounded by flowerbeds with countless species of trees, shrubs and herbs from all over the world. There is also a small pond in Santa Catarina Park with an island that the birds living here use to nest and rest. This green space, created in 1966, also contains statues honoring Infante D. Henrique (Henry the Navigator) and Christopher Columbus, a children's playground and the Santa Catarina Chapel. The highlight, however, is the panoramic view from the Bay of Funchal to the Ponta do Garajau.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Funchal Cathedral is a beautiful and ornate Catholic church with an interior that dates back to the 15th century. Its exterior is simple, but the interior is richly decorated with an early 16th-century gilded altarpiece and intricately carved sanctuary. The cathedral also features a stunning ceiling of white cedar with ivory inlay, which makes it one of the most impressive churches in Funchal.
A lovely little 6 hundred year old cathedral well worth a visit. Especially beautiful at Christmas time when the whole of Funchal is brightly lit with coloured lights and displays making it a magical place.

The interior is amazing! The main altar is a piece of art, but when you start looking/walking around this cathedral, you get the impression that many smaller alters are integral parts of the whole temple. Organs are not big, but the acoustics are so good that the sound is powerful.

Mountain cable car
The modern gondola running from Funchal to Monte offers stunning sea and mountain views, attracting many riders. One can purchase a roundtrip or one-way ticket depending on their plans to hike back down. The ascent provides exceptional vistas, and visitors can enjoy coffee and visit the Gardens at the top. For those who prefer hiking, the descent presents a challenging trek through different vegetation types, edges, paths and near the end of levada with beautiful city views.
The view is amazing but I found it a little bit expensive (16,00 eur for the round trip per person). Nevertheless there are bathrooms in very good condition and clean, the people working there is very kind and you can pay for a picture in the cable car as well. Take into consideration that there are two cable cars in Funchal, so maybe you want to go one way with this one and the other way with the one that goes to the botanical garden.
Deni Web — Google review
If you can catch a clear time to do this it's totally worth it. You can buy a roundtrip ticket or one way if you plan to hike back down. The ride up provides some great views and at the top you can grab a coffee and visit the Gardens. We decided to hike back down which was quite the trek since it's a drop of 2000' but was a very cool experience. You go through all sorts of different types of vegetation, along edges and various types of paths and near the end the levada which brings some really beautiful views of the city.

Awesome views. The queue moves quickly and it is a great experience. Worth every cent. Book to avoid the queues at the ticket office, but we'll organised and the queue moves quickly.

Another way to see the panorama of Funchal and port. Cable car is very popular among the tourists. Better avoid the long queues afternoon and book the ticket in the morning. From cable car is really nice view. You can see the whole city, ocean blue and much more. The cable car start by old part of the city, going highly over and stop near the entrance to Monte Palace Tropical Garden. It's also close (about 3 minutes walk) to Monte church. The windows should me more often cleaned and not only from outside as I saw it.
Anna Rokitowska — Google review
A nice experience,  beautiful view. You can see Funchal from above, how beautiful it is, and also see the houses, the sea and nature, as you go up from the city center to the middle of the mountain by cable car. Ride of about 10 to 15 minutes. You can also visit the tropical garden after experiencing the cable car. You can also be brought down a part with a toboggan (traditional wicker basket sledges in Madeira made from wood). This is also recommended, although it is pricey (27.50 euros for one person). From there you can continue down to Funchal on foot or by taxi. I did it on foot for more experience and to discover Funchal. That was a half-hour walk. Both activities are highly recommended!!
Jallouf Kim — Google review
It's a fun activity and a great way of getting to the heights of Madeira (the wicker toboggan start is a short walk from the top station). It's a lovely view and windows are clean. There's a queue to get on, locals talk about up to 1h30 (we waited 30 mins). They will take a photo of you at the base which you can then purchase at the top)
Julian Johnson — Google review
The operation seemed efficiently well run. A Photographer takes your photo  just before you ascend which you can pay for and keep as a souvenir The cable car ride itself  was great. The cabel car compartment was roomy and seated 6 people. We were able to have one just for our party. Unfortunately the weather wasn't brilliant.  We went on a day where there was intermittent showers.   The views lower down were fantastic. As you approached the top of the cable car  rid, you were surrounded by clouds of mist. Unfortunately, we couldn't actually see anything. I would definitely give the cabel car ride another go, if we came back to enjoy the views of Funchal.

They should prepare a longer route for these stunning views of Funchal city or match a bit better the price. For those who feel unsatisfied I recommend coming back and riding again.

An amazing experience . If you are in Madeira you must travel the cable car to Monte. Costs 18,00 each for a return trip .well worth it . The views are amazing .at the top you will find palace botanical gardens . And another garden which uses a cable car . We thought the palace garden was a little expensive at 12 :50 euros but found a lovely walk though some gardens for free. Also you can do the toboggan for Monte too. We had a great day

A very nice ride up the mountain. The cars hold 6 people very comfortably-they are huge and very spacious, and there is ample ventilation. The ride takes about 10 minutes and is lovely. If you buy your ticket in advance, you can go right into the building and wait in the line for the ride (on the ramp); if you need to purchase a ticket there, the line forms outside.

We've been on the cable car a number of times now is visits spanning a few decades. Well organised, clean, good views and of course the visit to Monte at the top. You can book online, but we just took the trip on spec this time (mid Aug). Bit of queuing but nothing too dramatic. An odd moment at the payment desk, paid in cash and seemed to ignore that €16 change was required, so be careful on that point. Fare was €18 return each when we were there.

This really is worth doing. As all the reviews mention the queues start Earlyish & just keep growing. Late October we arrived 9.45 & waited 30 mins to get a cable car. If we had better walking shoes we'd have opted for walking down or trying the tobogganing option. That was unbelievably busy ..& rather expensive!!!

The cable car is open 9-5.45pm every day. It is a quick way to reach Monte or Funchal. It costs €12 for one way or €18 for a return. It provides excellent views across the city. The journey takes 15 to 25 minutes.
Lynn Higgins — Google review
A very nice place and an experience to take. I recommend to but the tickets in advance because this way you don't need to stay in a line/queue outside the building (the starting point). In fact the line I have mentioned goes to the ticket office inside of the building. We bought the tickets online, so we just entered the building and joined the line to take the cabin. This line is different from the one for the tickets. The cabins are quite comfortable and the view is wonderful. There were 6 people in our cabin. When you come up, there is a great tropical garden which I definitely suggest to visit as long as you are anyway there. To go down, you can take either a cabin again or you can try the local attraction toboggan. We took toboggan and it was really one of the best things we did. Toboggan is totally safe and even I wasn't afraid, however, I am an easily frightened person. This attraction isn't cheap: in July 2023 the prices were approximately 25€ for one person in the sledge and 37€ for two people.

Fantastic views ! Long wait , and quite expensive for what how long ride is. We paid 40 euros for 3 adults and one child. At the top there is a wonderful botanical garden which is so amazing. Even tho the line went all the way outside and further it took 35 minutes roughly, it moves quite fast so don’t let the crowd spook you.

Stunning views and very peaceful on the way up to see the gardens, taking around 10 minutes to reach the top, highly recommend.

Funchal cable car in Madeira takes you way up into the mountain from the promenade. Great views of the whole area. Seaside, marina, kitchen gardens and the city itself. At the top you have to exit, where you can have a drink and a bite to eat at one of the bars, all with fantastic views. There's also a quaint little church up there. The cost of the ride was €18 round trip or €12 one way.
J Jones — Google review
The city of Funchal is known as a garden city due to the interplay of green spaces and houses, with a very rich flora in a symbiosis of country and city. This harmony of the landscape and surroundings makes the cable car ride a pleasant experience. Watch the city recede and approach the steep nature as you climb the mountainside, framed by the blue of the Atlantic. Also take a look at the natural beauty of Madeira, the course of its relief and its geology from the city to the hills of the municipality of Monte.
Karin S. — Google review
This provides great views and easy transport up the hill where lots of the main tourist attractions are, but hell, this is overpriced compared to cable cars in other cities in other european destinations. Even the one in London across the river Thames is cheaper, and that happens rarely that something in London is cheaper than elsewhere. And then, even though there was only a queue of 2 other couples behind us, we were not allowed to go alone as a couple and had to share it with another one. One plus were free to use toilets at the top of the hill right where you get off.
Michael Hocke — Google review
If you’re wanting a Birds Eye peak of Funchal going up to the Palace and botanical gardens, this is the faster and scenic route. Affordable and easy, about 20 minutes max up, the wait if you buy a ticket on the day isn’t too long.

Funchal restaurant Armazém do Sal offers excellent, unpretentious fare that is sure to please. The five-course 'extra value' tasting menu at €35 is a real bargain.
It's definitely worth a try. Really tasty and well presented dishes. Far from what is typical but it has a great twist. Great wine pairing. Lovely atmosphere. In terms of price it's definitely above the average but affordable if compared against similar in other places. Great value for money

Amazing food staff and experience. From the moment we arrived until we left service was amazing. Food out of this world. Fantastic. Cant really say anything else apart from thank you

We had an amazing meal here last night. The staff was extremely attentive while not being overbearing. The bottle of wine they suggested was incredible and we both enjoyed our meals immensely. 200 euros for four courses and a bottle of wine is an absolute steal. This included a generous tip, you could comfortably eat here as a couple for 120 euros.

If you are in Funchal get here now. Currently Michelin guide, it will get a star. We had the fish set menu with the wine pairing. It was amazing and good value for money too. I could have easily been in a one star restaurant.

Wonderful food experience. Great food, great wines. Lovely presentation of food, and interesting mixes of flavors that goes very well together. Fantastic service. If you want a fine dining experience in funchal this is a very good alternative. The fish with lime risotto was my favorite.

I enjoyed this place, but was let down by my main. I got the extra value menu for €43 and paid an extra €3 for the prawn starter. The prawns were great and I loved the flavour combinations together. The octopus was a bit salty and bland but the chocolate lava cake was delicious and I really enjoyed it. I also loved the bread at the start I chose sweet potato which was lovely with the garlic butter and balsamic. Service here was great however there was a small miscommunication I think due to the language barrier. The waiter asked if I wanted wine and I asked her is it included in the menu and she said yes but at the end of the bill I had to pay for me. It was only €5 but slightly annoying as I didn’t actually want the wine. This restaurant is lovely but I thought it would be slightly better due to its Michelin star. Still one to check out!
TravelWithTee _ — Google review
The food, the atmosphere and the service were excellent. If I had one thing to comment it would be the bread that was offered as an antree. It was charged 4€/ person, for a small slice of bread and butter plus some oil and vinagar. I would not recommend taking that. But otherwise, I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will eat here again the next chance I get.

Armazém do Sal in Funchal's center was an incredible find! We were lucky to snag a table without a reservation, probably because we went early. The food was outstanding, offering an unforgettable gastronomic journey. I highly recommend trying their Meat Lovers and Fish Lovers menus; they offer an array of delightful flavors. The authentic ambiance paired with the attentive and friendly staff made this dining experience truly exceptional. A must-visit spot!

Generally food in Funchal was very good, but Armazem do Sal was by far the best. Let me start by saying the service is excellent. Now about the food, there was not a single flaw in any of the dishes - composition, ingredients and presentation was on point. Would highly recommend to everybody visiting the island!

Excellent first evening in Funchal, Madeira and a lovely dinner experience. Great service, beautiful rustic setting...we ate in the outside terraced area and the service was very good. Main course food was fantastic and good value and the desserts were nice but overpriced. Overall a great evening tho and recommended.
Rosie — Google review
To begin the food was good but... I ordered the gastronomic experience. I was greeted with entirely too much silverware. I already had four pieces on the table and was given more. Now four pieces on the left and right. Confusing. I had wine pairings with my coursed meal. Wine glasses were never pulled. I had empty wine glasses on the table as I was served more wine with my next course. Even after being served wine with the next course, they still didn't remove empty glassware. When I was done with my dessert I had three empty wine glasses total on the table. THREE. I'm not sure why my water was being refilled but wine glasses were being placed and filled but empty ones weren't removed. When I paid the bill and had two empty glasses, they still weren't removed. I had two courses that were only dropped and not explained at all. The dish with the black rice was entirely too large for a tasting menu. Overall the food was good but I would have been much happier leaving with a 80€ bill versus 110€. Probably still disappointed with the service but at least I would have been more satisfied giving it a try. Not sure how or why they have any sort of michelin plaques on the wall. I get they don't have actual stars but to boast that was a bit ridiculous. Don't expect that kind of experience.

We had a lovely lunch here during our visit to Funchal. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. We absolutely loved our Mains which consisted of Risotto and Ravioli and both were piping hot, made up of fresh ingredients and absolutely tasty. For desert we ordered creme brulee which didn’t quite like it as the ice cream was too sweet. But overall we had an amazing experience with nice ambiance and attentive staff.

Cuisine amazing, aesthetic dishes, scenic interior. Gorgeous location, but unfortunately poor service, staff take ages to serve tables even when not busy.

Really not living up to the standards of being featured in the Michelin guide. The service wasn’t great and instead of doing it better they just kept apologising for forgetting about our table or taking too long. The food also wasn’t great and hugely overpriced for what you get. The fish was overcooked for starters, and the elements on the plates just didn’t go well together. Sadly we were disappointed by this choice of restaurant.

Very good and nicely presented food. I had a parrot fish and the nest egg dessert, both of which were very good. The only thing that bothered me was one of the photos on the wall highlighting the role of slavery in Madeira; it should be replaced with something else.

Lovey spot. Food preparation and presentation by people who really care and are professional in every manner. We will be back. We had the gastronomic menu and wine flights. Excellent pairings either way local wines.
JOHN STEINBACH — Google review
Food was very good and for the quality surpriseingly quite afordable, the lamb and the ox tail wellington from the meat lover set menu were both amazing. Personally if I went again I'd probably skip the wine pairing, they were nice but I didn't feel they added all too much to an already very tasty meal. Would recommend if you are in the area and looking for a fancy meal that you'll also be full after!

Very scenic dining room, tasty dishes, good presentation but can be a bit more creative. The waiting staff take very long time to serve and notice our table of 8 even when most tables have left. One waiter spilled the bread garnishes on table cloth and didnt replace dish. Service needs to be improved and tables need to be served quicker.

Breakfast restaurant
Prima Caju is a restaurant which serves healthy food such as salads, bowls, and brunch. They have vegan options available and the atmosphere is cozy and healthy.
Hands down the BEST brunch we’ve had in Portugal! The service was exceptional, the coffee was flavourful and strong and the dishes we ordered were delicious. We loved our first visit and decided to go a second time on our last day in Madeira; everything was as perfect as the first time. If you’re looking for a sweet and/or savoury brunch, look no further!

A nice place for a breakfast or brunch. There are some exceptional bowls and some nice combinaitons in the menu. The tortillas and smotthies were just ok. The service and staff is friendly. The env is nice and the decor is also great, it feels fresh and cosy. If you like this kind of muesli berry fruity nutty bowls, a bit more natural combinations and smotthies for a brunch or breakfast, you will love this place.

Favourite restaurant in Funchal. The staff is very helpful. They all speak English and can adjust the dishes to your requirements. Vegan and gluten-free friendly. The atmosphere is great and there is outside sitting as well. They have oat flat white too 🤯

A very instagrammable place, really beautifully designed, it has great vibes. Service is attentive, and food also arrived quite swiftly. I took the bagus bowl, where I could pick the frozen base, the fresh fruit and the extra topping which ended up a frozen mango-cashews-caramel combination. We also had pancakes which were made from oats, so a little bit dry, depends on what you prefer. It is a great brunch places, recommended to visit.

Delicious salad I had for takeaway… something with prawns… but small portion for the price! That said the goat cheese pastry with pumpkin jam was lovely… lovely staff and interesting, bougie veggie options that are unique in the city.
Jennifer Smith — Google review
Cute lunch and breakfast place with veggie and vegan options. Would be nice if they updated their menu once in a while, or have daily options as the 3-4 veg choices get a bit boring after a while. I get that it is geared more towards short stay guests, but I am sure people who live around here would appreciate some variety. Dogs are only allowed to sit outside, so if you are going for lunch it is best to book in advance.
Ono Mergen — Google review
The ambiance of this breakfast restaurant is genuinely enchanting. The décor is lush and green, adorned with moss, creating a soothing atmosphere. The seating is comfortable, and the menu presentation is appealing. However, the drinks and food offerings did not quite match up to the ambiance. The lemonades were either overly sour or had an odd aftertaste. The prices felt steep, especially considering the quantity of the dishes. While the poached eggs were decent, they didn't seem to justify the cost. The pancakes, priced at €7.5, were disappointingly small but had a very natural taste. Unfortunately, they lacked the desired fluffiness and intensity in flavor. On the positive side, the waitstaff were incredibly friendly and attentive. However, it was surprising how long the food took to arrive, especially since there weren't many patrons at the time. Despite the wonderful surroundings, I would hope for a revamped menu, quicker service, and better value for money in future visits.

Nice brunch spot with healthy food options (cream soups, bowls & more). You can feel they make an effort of using quality ingredients. Both Japanese and vegan bowls were good, but lacking wet ingredients, interesting texture and flavor combination, which made the food be good, but not extraordinary. Overall the interior will stay the main reason for visiting this place for us. Restrooms on the floor below, accessible through stairs and elevator.

What a good find this place was. It is a proper family business set up by three cousins (its all on the website) and they have created something really special. I also loved that they are the working masters in the business. We saw all three of them working the floor while we were there. Its a health food restaurant and has a large number of items on the menu are vegan friendly but I didn’t feel the the healthiness was forced on me. It’s a clever menu that combines wholesome food with fabulous taste. I didn’t even know that I was in a healthy establishment until I saw it on the website (although thats why my wife selected in for breakfast). We popped in for breakfast and treated ourselves to the brunch. If you have time and enough space in your tummy, check it out. It is a feast of yoghurt, eggs and pancakes, all arriving only after you’ve finished the previous course. I also had one of the special milkshakes and it too was top notch. The decor is uber cool and i can see why it attracts the number of people it does. The service was very friendly and helpful. We were looked after by one of the founders. Whilst there are places like this, why would you go to a big brand hotel for a pre-heated bland breakfast? I couldn’t recommend this more highly. We loved it and have booked to go back for lunch before we go home - so look out for an update and more photos. Update - we returned for lunch which was just as good. We shared a Ceviche Lagom to start. It was fabulous. The citrus dressing complimented the fish perfectly. For mains, I had the Melaka bowl with salmon. It worked really well. My wife had the Asian bowl and enjoyed that too.

The caju brunch was AMAZING. There was a juice included (so good!), eggs on toasts, a granola and some pancakes. Everything was so healthy! The service was nice. The atmosphere inside was incredible and everything so modern. And loved the bathrooms. Go visit this restaurant!

We came in for a coffee and a small snack. The edamame was tasty. I had an espresso coffee and was thinking to have a white coffee before. When I noticed they charge 1,50 Euros extra for plant based milk, I was shocked. That’s a horrible rip off, worse than Starbucks. Service was a bit slow and not the friendliest in Funchal. The interior is stylish and hip. The other plates looked pretty good, unfortunately not many vegan options.

Very nice place for brunch and lunch. It is located in the older part of Funchal. The food and service are at a very good level. The coffee is great. I recommend.

You shouldn't let the title "health food" fool you. Although they serve a few vegetarian "bowls" and home-made kombucha, they also serve very good lamb (in a bowl, but might as well be on a plate), eggs, ceviche etc. Everything we tasted was nice. Nothing special but you can't go wrong having a breakfast, lunch or a brunch here.

Excellent! Fresh ingredients, quality fruits, meats, fish and vegetables. I recommend the açaí bowl or any of the savory bowls. We loved it here and would return in a heartbeat. Make reservations if your on a time crunch because the tables fill up and there can be a wait. The inside is beautiful!

Highly recommended restaurant: excellent food quality, really tasty and feels healthy (good portions too). We sat out of the street tables and enjoyed watching the world go by. Inside the vibe is very modern and chique. We had the lamb rice bowl, with lovely tender lamb slices, an amazing sauce and fluffy rice. Ordered some extra chicken on the side (probably wasn’t necessary as the main bowl portion was so generous!). We also had the goats cheese and pumpkin jam puff, which was delicious.
Maddy — Google review
I must say, this place exudes some seriously cool vibes. The interior design strikes the perfect balance between cozy and stylish, creating a welcoming atmosphere. One thing that immediately caught my attention was the abundance of healthy options on the menu, especially for salad and egg lovers. But what truly impressed me was the diverse non-alcoholic drinks selection. From detox juices to kombucha, they've got it all. And to my delightful surprise, I stumbled upon a Cappuccino with oat milk - something I'm always on the lookout for! Although the milk itself didn't quite hit the mark, I'd like to recommend to the management that they consider using Oatly brand oat milk, as it's renowned as the best in the market and would elevate their Cappuccino to new heights. (I've seen it at Bio-Logos shops in Madeira.) One major plus point here is that their lemonades are sugar-free. A word of advice: If you plan on enjoying brunch here, it's best to reserve a table in advance. All in all, this place has earned a spot among my top three favorite spots in Madeira. Highly recommended!

SKIP THIS! I’m shocked at all the good reviews! Want to start by saying the service was great 5/5. We were given a free special bite of a small green thing with cheese and chorizo among other things that was actually quite good. The food though was borderline inedible. We had a bruschetta to start which was good the bread was soft and the tomato was fresh. We both ordered linguini with prawns in a lobster sauce and the pasta was SO DRY. I do want to say the prawns were good 4/5 but I couldn’t get over how bad the pasta was we tried adding more Parmesan cheese to fix the plate but nothing worked 0/5 for the pasta and sauce. We ordered a tiramisu and it was such a mistake it was BY FAR the worst tiramisu I have ever eaten in my LIFE it had a gelatin like consistency and I cant even describe how bad it was it was chewy like bad on so many levels and the top sprinkle of I don’t know what on the top smelled exactly like dog food . The views you can see are pretty and the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere. Would never return ever nor recommend based on the food. For these prices compared to what you can get in the area SKIP THIS PLACE the view is not worth it. I am so disappointed that we threw 100$ basically down the drain for a terrible dinner.

Usually a restaurant with a great view means it has poor food. This is the exception. Very good dining experience. The shrimp linguini and gnocchi were okay, not spectacular. The tiramisu was outstanding. The service was perhaps too good. Multiple waiters serving our table- as such, after every sip of water they were refilled. A bit difficult to enjoy the night with so much attention. View was outstanding. Appetizers and Desserts were outstanding. Main courses were underwhelming. Overall, good experience!

One of the most emblematic and traditional restaurants in Madeira. This, more than an advantage, makes expectations always high. Special mention to the staff, extremely attentive and helpful. Correct food, according to what you would expect from a place of its category and price range. The facilities are in urgent need of renovation. Although cared for, they are simply old...

Il Gallo D'Oro is a highly rated and expensive fine dining restaurant with a vegan menu. While the food may be considered traditional, it still offers a high quality dining experience.
Wow, I am stunned. The presentation of the dishes, the wine, the flavors, the service, absolutely fantastic. This Madeira tasting menu was unforgettable. I actually regret choosing only the 7-course tasting because the portion sizes were spot on. Can't wait to come back again.

This is the best restaurant on the island. 2 stars Michelin and deserved for the wine Pairing and the service which is perfect. The plating and complexity of the dishes are also stunning. The only issue is on some discrepancies between the plate name and the final taste of it. The beef consommé was tasteless. And they announce French cheese or dark chocolate that also doesn’t taste as expected or as it should be when we know this cheese or really good Belgian chocolate. The sommelier are wonderful here and the selection they are proposing is a must. To be recommended.

Exceptional service, very knowledgeable and helpful waiters. We had the Terroir menu, which consisted of creative twists on traditional Madeiran cuisine. Every single dish was outstanding! There were interesting combinations of flavours and textures that were all delicious, and each dish was presented in a fun and thoughtful way, with clear attention paid to every last detail. Overall we were very impressed and had a great time.

Really lovely meal here recently. Had the 8 course top experience menu. The presentation of each course was superb, wonderful staff who explain everything really well and gave some insightful info about the source of and reason for choosing some of the ingredients. Really tasty, perhaps I wasn't blown away by anything but I got to try new things and it was a lovely experience. The wines were fabulous, beautiful glasses of different varieties to compliment the flavour profiles of the wines. Super, would highly recommend.

Dined here in October of 2023. Incredible experience. One of the better meals we've ever had. Had the 11 moment "Terroir" menu with wine pairing. We'd spent a few weeks on the island by this point, and knew the local flavors pretty well. Glad to have done it that way. Really fun to see the two-star twist on the flavors and experiences we were familiar with. Setting and ambiance were wonderful, looking over the ocean as daylight faded... Wines were wonderful, well-presented, and thoughtfully paired. Food was spectacular - delicious, beautiful, playful, and interesting. Service was impeccable, attentive and present without being intrusive, very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed ourselves. Would recommend.

The food at Il Gallo D'Oro was generally excellent, creative, and aesthetically pleasing. The dishes were well-presented and the flavors were complex and exciting. However, the ambiance of the restaurant was uninspiring, and lacking in personality. The service was also lackluster for a 2-star Michelin-rated restaurant. The overall experience was underwhelming and not worth the price.

The restaurant features two seasonally tasting menus and a few a la carte options. A vegetarian tasting menu is also available. The food and service are exceptional. The chef was willing to make some modifications or additions to the menu. There are bread, butter, and salt choices. Superior service is delivered. Except a premium price to go with the package. The only area of improvement I suggest is that the room could be more elegant.

If an impressionist painting had a taste this would be it. Delicate taste against a contrasting aroma, a beautiful blend of texture and color. We had the 8 course taste menu and I wish I had the 11 one, that much I enjoyed it. Dress casual chic, some people arrive very casual. A little black dress will do just fine. The service is flawless, the paring of the wine done to perfection, I enjoyed every dish however I appreciated the salt plate, the breads and my favorite the butter selection! I think is a small luxury to have hand made butter! Thank you to Diana for the lovely guide to this delicious journey!

My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at Il Gallo D'Oro yesterday evening. Overall, we found the experience to be enjoyable, and the food was certainly satisfying. However, as seasoned diners who have had the privilege of visiting many Michelin-starred restaurants, we couldn't help but feel that the menu fell somewhat short of our expectations. While there were a few dishes that stood out as exceptional, on the whole, it failed to live up to the level of culinary excellence we have come to expect from a two-starred Michelin establishment. On the other hand, the waiters were incredibly professional and attentive, providing impeccable service throughout the meal. All in all, while we had a pleasant evening, we were left feeling a bit underwhelmed by the culinary offerings at Il Gallo D'Oro.

3 courses out of 9 (tuna, scallop and fish) were of 2 star quality, the remaining 6 of varied quality, but far from worth the price charged. OK wine pairings, but again not of 2 star quality. Good service throughout half the night, but then it dried up and left us waiting for the last courses. Very beautiful presentations and professional waiters and sommeliers. All in all an overpriced experience a fair bit below our expectations of a 2 star restaurant.

For a 2 star Michelin restaurant, expectations are high… and in this case they were exceeded. The food was as good, and as inventive as almost any Michelin Starred restaurant i have been to and if up there with my best meals ever. We opted for the Terroir Experience with 8 courses for €225 per head. There’s an 11 course version but we’d made the mistake of having a bit of lunch earlier in the day. As ever in such places - you get more than the 8 courses and it was more than enough for pretty much any appetite. From the moment you arrive you know you’re in for a treat. Every dish had a mix of flavours that cleverly worked together. Some were very surprising. Even the bread course was special with 4 amazing butters and 4/5 different salts. The Tuna was very special but we really struggled to decide what our favourite meal was. The wine list is extensive. Unusually for a starred restaurant all the wines were Portuguese but I like Portuguese reds anyway, and the sommelier found me a lovely new experience based on previous favourites. I didn’t plump for the wine pairing because i always favour reds but I saw other tables who did, and they had a good explanation about each. The service was… as you’d expect… flawless. Everyone had excellent knowledge and was super friendly. Our most expensive meal in Madeira so far, but money very well spent and we will return one day Particular highlights for me were the tuna

Casa Velha Funchal is a high-quality restaurant in Madeira with traditional dishes that are surprisingly affordable. The atmosphere is welcoming and the service is excellent. Complimentary pastel de nata make it a favourite restaurant so far.
Beautiful food, fantastic service and atmosphere! I had the fillet steak (very reasonable price for €19) and my partner had the beef skewers which were also great. We shared the banoffee pie, which the kitchen delivered as two separate portions. Complimentary pastel de nata were a great touch-favourite restaurant so far!

Amazing food! The local scabbard fish was the best I tried in Madeira. The atmosphere is lovely. Also they have an amazing wine selection. Would have been 5 stars but our orders weren’t put through properly twice so we ended up with mains first then our starters after. Still delicious and recommend.

Cannot recommend this place enough. Service was quick, personable and attentive. Food was out of this world. We had the parma ham and melon for starter and the scallop linguine. Scallops would melt in your mouth and was all perfectly seasoned. Beautiful atmosphere as well. Highly recommend!

Lovely Lunch in the Garden. We were just passing and feeling ready for a latish light lunch. What a discovery! The garden is a delight on a sunny afternoon and the inside looked lovely for an evening meal. My companion had a tuna sandwich (which they specially prepared for her without onion). I had a simple minute steak. Both very pleasant. We also had a half bottle of a nice Portuguese white wine - great to be able to get that size with a light lunch. All very pleasantly and promptly served. Total E26 before tip. Highly recommended.

If you like quality fresh food and fantastic service you really must visit this wonderful restaurant just out of the town of Funchal. Located down a side street behind the back of the Savoy Palace. You will not be disappointed. Food is divine and staff super efficient. I have eaten in some quality places but this is probably one of my favourites. It wasn't super expensive either. This restaurant is an absolute must and I will certainly dine here again the next time I visit Maderia

It was the best restaurant we visited during our stay last weekend. Yummy food at reasonable prices plus great atmosphere and the waiters were the best. Thank you

Sorry but I really didn't enjoy my main of Steak Diane or the accompanying vegetables. Soup starter was quite tasty but felt that overall it wasn't worth the money. Shame, as it was a nice traditional style Madeira restaurant and staff were friendly and attentive.

We have eaten here two evenings out of four nights stay in Funchal. The food was very taste and the portion was generous. I must mentioned that the waiters were professional and attentive. Highly recommended in town!

This place tries very hard to deliver an upscale atmosphere with gourmet food. And the food is delicious - for the most part. Fish is awesome. The legumes were cooked to perfection. Even the chicken for my son wasn't the usual dry sadness you usually expect. My beef skewer however (traditional Madeira dish) was rather bland. Ice cream dessert was very disappointing, Creme Brulée however was delicious. The biggest issue here, however, is how crowded the place is and how much stress rests on the servers' shoulders. They try hard, I give them that, but it's simply too much for them. When you have a queue waiting to be seated while the tables aren't yet prepared and everyone is waiting for either their food or anything else, mistakes are made and this really hurts the experience. More than one glass was tipped while we were there and the cutlery was heavily mixed up.

Very cool environment, excellent service and delicious food. We had duck confit and fish (espada flambe). Duck confit is particularly tasty. Highly recommended!

We had the scabbard fish flambee and the mango au gratin for dessert, both of which were amazing. The staff were very friendly and gave us some great advise for wine with our main and the dessert. Last but not least, the location was beautiful. I would defenitely come back here.

We had a wonderful dinner a few nights ago and plan to return before we leave Madeira. The service was excellent. I had the lamb and my hubby had pasta and prawns that he loved!! I enjoyed my lamb and mint sauce. Very light, tasty, perfectly cooked. The server heard me say I didn’t really like sauces and he brought me two different sauces on the side to go with my lamb. I chose the mint. But it’s these extra efforts that add to the overall ambiance and feeling of hospitality. For dessert I had the Alaska crepe! Yummy!! He made it practically in front of me with the Grand Mariner liqueur and something else, let’s just say, for a woman who doesn’t like sauces, I ate them all! 🥰 highly recommend. Classy and comfortable at the same time!

I thought it was quite hard to find a bad restaurant in Madeira. However, I did. This was the worst experience I ever had. My 5 y.o. kid was standing near the chair while the waiter said him - "do not walk here"...what? When the kid was interested in their 1$ artificial candles on the table, the waiter said- "do not touch it" ... what? We ordered medallions. I repeated 2 times with no blood, please. They served with blood. I ordered seafood cream soup and could try just a spoon, while my wife tried a small piece of meat. And i do not even want to write about the red wine quality they served. We asked a bill immediately, hoping to leave that place as soon as possible. I have no idea how they got a Michellen award. Terrible service and food. They did not include the meat into the bill, I left some tips, but I would not recommend this place.
