The Polonnaruwa Gal Vihara is a beautiful rock temple located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in central Sri Lanka. It is one of the most iconic attractions in the country and is still popularly worshipped by Buddhists today. The temple features four statues of the Buddha, all carved from solid granite, and exhibits a high level of artistry and craftsmanship that blossomed during the Polonnaruwa Kingdom.
For those who appreciate history, this is one of the most impressive sights they have ever explored. Even if they are not as well preserved, the ruins of the former city rival the sights of wonderful Rome or Athens. When visting the site don't hesitate to ask for an official guide (ask at the museum).

One of the best Archeo sites in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. Very ancient and has really nice places. Will need about 2 days to cover all in time, but can be done in 1 day as well. The main complex is the best and probably the most beautiful ancient architecture in the country. The round bldg with 4 statues on 4 sides and the other temples are a treat to explore. Even the rock cut Buddha statues further ahead are a wonder.

The main feature of the temple is four rock relief statues of the Buddha have been carved into a large granite rock. It is a great work who has done in Polonnaruwa kindom. Few people be there. They will give you a better explanation. Vehicle parking and all kind of facilities have provided there. But bring some water. In these days the place is very hot. Go and see our great history.

Originally called the Uttararama, the Gal Vihara is a Buddhist rock temple located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, which is now the modern-day Polonnaruwa in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. King Parakramabahu I fashioned it in the 12th century. Four Buddha rock relief statues that have been carved into the face of a sizable granite gneiss rock serve as the temple's main focal point. The pictures show a big sitting figure, a smaller one sitting inside a made-out cave, a standing figure, and a reclining person. These are considered to be some of the best examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpting and carving arts, and have made the Gal Vihara the most visited monument at Polonnaruwa.

The Gal Vihara (Rock temple/Rock monastery) a.k.a Uttararama is a 12th CE rock temple built by King Parakramabahu I. The temple is situated in Polonnaruwa and is a chief tourist draw in the region. The temple has three large statues of the Buddha carved into a single granite rock face. The site also has a smaller statute also carved next to the larger statue in an artificial cave termed Vidhyadhara Guhawa. Foreign tourists would need to secure tickets to see the site at the Polonnaruwa Museum (next to the Bund Rd). The tickets include access to other sites in Polonnaruwa. The area is frequented by toque macaques and Hanuman langurs.

A must to see in Polonnaruwa. The history of this place is amazing with relics dating back to the 7c. We went in May 23 and even then the place is hot, be prepared for hot feet when entering some of the sacred areas but you must experience it all from then smallest of ruin to the grandeur of the carved in rock monuments. A truly unique and beautiful place

We had an amazing day visiting this vast site. Be warned, if you plan to walk this site, please try and do so on a not so hot day! You can really spend hours here. You can rent a bicycle to get around the place or if you have a driver, they can take you from point to point. I truly don’t think the $25 dollars is expensive at all for what you get to see. Tickets must be purchased at the museum not too far from the site. Please also remember to be respectful. No hats and shoes inside holy areas and no pictures with your back to Buddha. Unfortunately we saw too many tourists do this, but everything is clearly signed! Definitely worth the day trip if you have the time.

A great place to visit and observe for all lovers of ancient sculpture and buddhist artistic creations. You need to spend several hours, ideally early morning or in the evening, here to observe the detail. The more you observe, more you will realize the artistic talent of the creators and beauty of creations. There are several guides around, English speaking, who are capable of explaining the historical background and details of creations. The authorities can do more to improve the visitor facilities and to provide guidance/information specially to the foreign tourists. Strongly advised against visiting during the day time (unless in the rainy season) due to hot weather. No tickets required for locals.

This is Polonnaruwa's Uttararama or Galvihara, a magnificent creation. I actually looked at the trio of idols without batting an eye. In fact, I still can't believe how those emotions were harvested on that rock. The other opinion about the standing statue and the reclining statue is that "Ananda Thero was shocked to see Buddha's parinirvana". See for yourself. Emotions evoked by those eyes. There are three statues that are of great interest, as it depicts the Lord Buddha in three unique positions. The seated statue shows the Buddha depicting the Dhyana mudra, while the reclining statue depicts the Parinirvana position, and is one of the most intricately sculpted statues, as the depression of the pillow, along with the lotus symbol on the side is still very visible even to this day. The standing image, on the other hand, is believed to be the Lord Buddha depicting an unusual gesture, which has led many archaeologists to believe that it is not the depiction of the Buddha, but his disciple Ananda. The Gal Vihara, sometimes known as the ‘Uttaramaya’ (Northern Temple), is also believed to have once been covered in frescoes of intriguing nature, however, has long been destroyed due to the Chola invasions that took place in the 14th century.

The Vatadage is a unique Buddhist monument found on the island of Sri Lanka. It is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world, and it was constructed to protect the stupa where the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha was housed. The carvings that decorates both platforms are still incomplete, but they are still an impressive sight.
One of the most amazing historica sites. An expensive entrance fee ($20) but definitely worth it if you are interested in history and religious monuments. The cost includes the entire ancient city complex and you can buy your ticket at the museum: The ancient city is beautiful and it has plenty of wonderful sites with clear information (translated to English). Be aware you'll need to cover your knees and soldiers if you want to enter any of religious sections. You will also be harassed by the many walking vendors.

This beautiful Stupa House (Vatadage) has been built before the time of Nissanga Malla (1187-1196) but he has carried out major renovations on this building. So what you see today is probably his work. The uniqueness of such buildings is that the Stupa is protected by a roof. Therefore Stupa’s in such buildings are small. Another beautiful “Vatadage” is situated in Madirigiriya few kilometers away from Polonnaruwa. A detail description of the overall “Stupaghara” or “Chethiyaghara” architecture including vatadages of Sri Lanka can be found here. On the centre is a small stupa and on the four sides, there are beautifully carved Buddha statues. These statues are different to what is normally found. The curly hair is not visible on the head. And the robe is also flat which is unusual. The roof has been supported by two rows of stone pillars around the Stupa. None of the pillars are visible today. But the pillars outside the walls are still intact. Four sets of beautifully carved stone stairs lead the upper level from four sides. On the side of stair case some of most beautiful guard stones and moonstones in this area can be seen. The guard stones on the eastern side of the temple is said to be the best guard stone in t he Polonnaruwa period. The moonstones in the Polonnaruwa era had undergone a major change compared to the Anuradhapura moonstones. The most visible is the disappearance of the bull in the carvings. (See Pancavasa with the Moonstone for a brief description of moonstones in Anuradhapura era.) Where the moonstones originally had four animals – the elephant, the horse, the lion, the bull, now only three remain. Bull is the vehicle of God Shiva (according to Hindu beliefs) and is considered a holy animal by Hindu’s. Probably for this reason, it has been taken off the moonstone where everybody who enters the temple tramples. Instead the bull has been placed on the side of the stairways at a higher elevation in some places.

The Lankatilaka Viharaya temple is an imposing ancient building in Polonnaruwa that houses a giant Buddha statue. The structure was built by King Parakramabahu and it is considered one of the most beautiful and well-preserved historical landmarks in the city.
History says that Lankathilaka is a massive image house of Buddha built by King Parakramabahu in 1153–1186. The building is completely made of bricks, including the roof. This was a unique design at that era, and it was called "Gedige." At the far end of the building, there is a huge statue of Lord Buddha, which is also made of bricks. The statue is approximately 40 feet high, but unfortunately, the portion above the shoulders has been completely destroyed by now. Near the main statue, there are two stairways for the upper floors. It is impossible to climb these stairs in a normal way unless you turn back towards the walls. The reason for this is that the climber should not turn his back on the Buddha statue. I believe the building has been lit up using the sunlight and moonlight at night. They have used a special kind of stone called "Chandrakanthi pashana" (I don't know the name in English), which can reflect light and glow like diamonds.

Bodies of Water
The Parakrama Samudra is a large body of water that forms part of a chain of reservoirs. It was constructed during the reign of King Parakramabahu and serves as evidence for advanced engineering during this time period. The area surrounding Polonnaruwa, where the lake is located, was not suitable for farming because it lacked sufficient rainfall. In order to address this issue, the king built the massive tank in the 12th century for irrigation purposes.
The northernmost reservoir is the oldest and referred to as Topa wewa (Sinhalese wewa is almost equal to English word lake or reservoir, but used unique Sri Lankan technology) built around 386 AD. The middle section Eramudu wewa and the southernmost portion, at the highest elevation, is Dumbutula wewa, both sections were added and the reservoir expanded during the reign of King Parâkramabâhu I.[1] This wewa (reservoir) was built under the quote "do not let even a drop of rain water in this country to go to the sea without use". The wewa (reservoir) was so large it was called samudhraya or ocean but there was another reason it was called that due to the wind we know that waves erupt in tanks, parakrama samudhraya was so large the waves come as big as the ocean waves.
HMH Madhushan — Google review
Anyone can identity parakrama samudraya from any other tanks evan a picture it has waves like a sea. This vast water reservoir was built by King Parakramabahu the great (1153-1186) and today what you see as the Parakrama Samudraya is only a portion of his original creation. Parakrama Samudraya originally consisted of five large reservoirs separated by smaller dams to reduce the pressure on the main dam. In Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, Parakrama Samudra, also known as King Parakrama's Sea or the Sea of King Parakrama, is a shallow reservoir (wewa) made up of five distinct wewa (reservoirs) (thopa, dumbutulu, erabadu, bhu, and kalahagala tanks) connected by small channels.

Sri Lanka has two large monsoon seasons, each lasting about three months. The rest of year remains dry and hot, except for a few short heat induced thunderstorms at night. This climate, with its lack of regular water, can have a devastating effect on those who make a living from agriculture. Parakrama Samudra in Sri Lanka was one such solution to the problem of lack of water. In an attempt to alleviate this problem, many ancient kings built reservoirs that regulate water. Parakrama Samudra too is such a construction built in Polonnaruwa by King Parakramabahu the first who ruled there from 1153 AD to 1153 AD. The Sea of Parakrama or Parakrama Samudra originally consisted of five large reservoirs which relieved the pressure on the main dam. The first reservoir Thopa Vewa already existed in King Parakramabahu’s time having been built in 386 AD. The king had the other large reservoirs included and the entire system expanded. In addition, many smaller reservoirs were built around the primary reservoirs to feed them water and to take away any excess water. Parakrama Samudra:The Main Reservoirs of the Original Parakrama Samudra 1. Thopa Vewa 2. Eramudu Vewa (Katu Vewa) 3. Dumbuthula Vewa 4. Kalahagala Vewa 5. Bhu Vewa However, during reconstructions in the 19th century the water being fed to Thopa Vewa started flowing to Bhu Vewa as a result of some new structural error. With a possibility of destruction from flooding hanging over their heads, the engineers made the quick decision to build a temporary dam to halt the water flow. Unfortunately this separated the last two reservoirs, Kalahagala Vewa and Bhu Vewa, from the system completely. The temporary dam became a permanent road isolating the first three reservoirs into a smaller version of the originally vast Parakrama Samudra. In addition the reconstructions further reduced the capacity of the reservoir due to completely ignoring the complex ancient technology it was built with.

This is one of the biggest tanks in Sri Lanka. It has waves like in the sea. You can experience a very refreshing wind on the tank bunt. A good place to relax. This is located in Polonnaruwa, very close to the town. There are several hotels and government circuit bunglows built by the lake. There is a small island in the middle of the lake. It is a habitat of lot of crows.

Don't come here expecting to see something mind-boggling. This is just a lake that shows what a lake looks like when it is pure and untouched. The place is breathtakingly beautiful with a good dose of fresh and healthy air. Reach this place early in the morning to take a look at the sunrise. Totally recommended that you visit the place if you are around Polonnaruwa.

Parakrama Samudra, an ancient reservoir nestled in the heart of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, stands as a grand testament to the island's historical prowess in hydraulic engineering and water management. Constructed during the reign of King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, this colossal reservoir is not merely a body of water but a symbol of cultural and agricultural prosperity that has endured for centuries. Parakrama Samudra, translating to "Sea of Parakrama," reflects the grand vision and ambitious undertakings of King Parakramabahu I. This reservoir was a central component of the king's plan to transform Polonnaruwa into a flourishing capital, marked by advanced urban planning and sustainable agriculture. Covering an expansive area of approximately 2,500 acres, the reservoir became a critical source of water for the city and its surrounding agricultural lands. The reservoir's construction involved the creation of a massive earthen embankment, strategically designed to capture and store water from the Amban River. The sheer scale and engineering ingenuity displayed in the creation of Parakrama Samudra are awe-inspiring, reflecting the advanced hydraulic civilization of ancient Sri Lanka. The primary purpose of Parakrama Samudra was to serve as a reliable irrigation source for the surrounding paddy fields, enabling year-round cultivation and sustaining a prosperous agricultural community. The reservoir's waters were meticulously distributed through an intricate network of canals and channels, reaching farmlands in the vicinity and fostering an environment conducive to rice cultivation. The cultural and religious significance of Parakrama Samudra is evident in the architectural marvels surrounding its banks. The iconic Parakrama Samudra Sea Wall, also known as "Yudaganawa," spans over 8 miles and showcases the expertise of ancient builders in creating durable and functional structures. The walls not only protected the reservoir from erosion but also served as a testament to the grandeur of the kingdom. The name "Parakrama Samudra" also reflects the philosophical and cultural dimensions associated with the reservoir. It symbolizes the king's aspiration to create a vast, boundless sea of prosperity for his people, fostering an environment where agriculture, commerce, and culture could thrive. Even after centuries, Parakrama Samudra remains a functioning reservoir, supporting agriculture in the region. The tank continues to play a pivotal role in maintaining the agricultural traditions of Polonnaruwa, ensuring that the cultural and historical legacy of this ancient hydraulic marvel endures. Conservation efforts have been undertaken to preserve Parakrama Samudra and its associated structures, recognizing its significance as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors to Polonnaruwa can marvel at the grandeur of this ancient reservoir, reflecting on the enduring impact of King Parakramabahu I's vision on the landscape and culture of Sri Lanka. Parakrama Samudra stands as a timeless testament to the island's ability to harness and manage water resources, creating sustainable environments that have stood the test of time.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Dine Time Family Restaurant while exploring Kaduruwela Town during my trip from Gallella. Located conveniently near Choice Park-Kaduruwela, Amana Bank-Kaduruwela, and in front of Al-Haj S.T.S Ahamed & Sons (PVT) Ltd. (Lanka IOC Fuel Station), this restaurant truly exceeded my expectations in terms of food quality and ambiance. The highlight of my visit was undeniably the Mixed Fried Rice. It has become my all-time favorite dish! The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the rice was cooked to perfection. Each bite was a burst of deliciousness that left me craving for more. Another standout item on the menu was the Crispy Chicken Submarine. It was, without a doubt, the best submarine I have ever tasted. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining tender and juicy on the inside. The combination of flavors and textures was absolutely delightful. I also had the opportunity to try the Crispy Chicken Shawarma, which, while not extraordinary, surpassed my experiences at other restaurants in Polonnaruwa. The taste was above average, and the chicken was well-seasoned and flavorful. The complimentary salad that accompanied the fried rice was a pleasant surprise. It was not just an afterthought; it had a delightful taste that complemented the main dish wonderfully. To quench my thirst, I opted for their Mango Milkshake, and I was not disappointed. Unlike other places that use ice cream to make their milkshakes, Dine Time Family Restaurant prepared it using real mango fruit. The result was a refreshing and flavorful milkshake that stood out from the rest. The restaurant's ambiance was equally impressive. It had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. The staff members were friendly, attentive, and ensured that our dining experience was enjoyable from start to finish. Overall, my visit to Dine Time Family Restaurant was a memorable one. The delectable Mixed Fried Rice, mouthwatering Crispy Chicken Submarine, and refreshing Mango Milkshake are dishes I would highly recommend. The restaurant's attention to quality, combined with its warm ambiance, made it a standout dining destination in Kaduruwela Town. I look forward to visiting again on my next trip to the area! If someone asked me what's the only place you would eat today if you can eat in any restaurant in Polonnaruwa? My answer would be DineTime. Not only the food that made my answer so easy, but I've also been a customer for so many years now, and through out those years, I never had an unpleasant encounter with them. Every single day for the last few years they never missed to ask me “How was the food?”. And they take our criticism and compliments very seriously. Good customer service, polite people, flexible ordering, etc. Getting a four-star review from me is a rare scenario especially when it comes to food. Keep it up, guys. Cheers

Mostly based off the Dinemore franchise... Spicy chicken sub was actually BETTER than that of Dinemore! Onion rings were on the dot. Seafood noodles and sweet corn and egg soup were thoroughly mediocre. Staff was friendly. Adequate parking. Dining area was a little dingy. Mould on the ceiling! Will visit again for sure. Just for the subs!

If you're craving genuine Sri Lankan and Asian cuisine, head on over to Jaga Food. This restaurant offers a variety of delicious dishes that are buffet-style, allowing you to sample everything they have to offer. The food is made using fresh ingredients from their own organic garden, adding an extra level of quality to each meal. At just $3 per main course, it's not only tasty but also affordable. Additionally, the owners are known for their friendly and warmhearted nature.
You‘d think it‘s a tourist trap but the food was honestly super delicious. It‘s kind of buffet style and you get to try all the different dishes, which we did, and we actually liked every single one. It was super tasty and the plate of desserts at the end was also delightful. Everything is made from the organic garden next to the restaurant. Last but not least, the owners were very friendly and warmhearted. Super sweet. This whole experience was such a pleasant surprise! Definitely give it a try if you‘re in the area, I‘m sure you won‘t regret it.

Okay so this was hands down one of the best meals I ever ate. And it was situated in the middle of rice paddies. Found this place on Happy Cow and it was a bit away but we made it. Such a beautiful owner. I was not expecting this madness. Every bite…every curry…every dish just as good as the last. I did the best I can eating 3 platefuls and while I left feeling absolutely stuffed, it didn’t feel so bad. Can’t wait to go back here. Truly one of the most magical places and meals I ever ate.

My friends took me to this place and I still can't believe how beautiful this place was! This place is surrounded by paddy fields and has a nice garden growing fresh fruits and veggies. There is a small stream besides the place and you can also see some wild monitor lizards in that stream (of course, there is a railing to keep them away from the place but you can still appreciate them)! The food was so good and they had so many curries. As a vegetarian person myself, I could not believe how many vegetarian/vegan dishes this place had. You get authentic Sri Lankan food like no place! The owner was so lovely and so fun to talk to. A must visit <3 Love from India!

This was an authentic way to try some traditional Sri Lankan cooking. The owner was very welcoming and the selection of plates that he served us were both varied and plentiful. There was one or two reasonably spicy dishes, but the large majority were mild. We definitely recommend this place, however, I would suggest that lunch is perhaps the right way to go, rather than dinner, as the surrounding scenery may be best viewed during daylight.

We were promised authentic Sri Lankan food presented and served in a traditional manner - and we were not disappointed at all. Set well off the road in very quiet surroundings in the midst of rice paddies and vegetable gardens, this family owned and operated restaurant was a culinary delight. While I'm not a fan of buffet lunches in general nor those now widely on offer in Sri Lanka, in this case particular case I will make an exception. We cherished watching the preparation of the home grown food ingredients on the outside wood fireplace to be then served in traditional clay pots with outstanding taste, the warmest hospitality, and very reasonable pricing. We will be back.

After a hectic day at Sigiriya, we reached Jaga food on our Chauffer's recommendation to taste foods of Lanka! And we were not disappointed at all! We opted for Buffet and the range of foods were enough to understand Srilankan cuisine and make your tummy and heart satisfied. The location is also fantastic to enjoy the food, in background you can hear the high pitched calls/ honking from peacocks, kingfisher showing their presence to hunt fishes, and other birds and squirrels. We really appreciated the way we were greeted and neat and cleanliness of the space. If we visit Srilanka again, we hope to see this restaurant thriving more!

Homemade incredible curry buffet, with amazing views and the kindest owners. The buffet is set on a large table and in front of each curry they place the vegetable it is made of. Most of them are vegetarian and non spicy but there are a couple with meat and some heat. The views into the sugar cane and rice fields are just the last element to make this lunch experience unforgetable. Definetely worth a visit!

A hidden gem of a place in Polonnaruwa. They offer a personalized buffet with around twenty curries. There are roti, wade and such side dishes as well and the dessert again is like a small buffet. To be frank I have not seen such a spread of Sri Lankan cuisine even at star rated hotels. Food is super tasty. Location is beautiful and the meals are served on a lotus leaf in clay huts. Excellent lunch!😄 We had the fortune of having a tour guide take us here (so glad we asked for a recommended Sri Lankan restaurant). Atmosphere was lovely, and the food was great (also 90% vegan🥳). As well as the grassy fields, my view while dining also at one point had a mongoose, hundreds of dragonflies, then later a cat. Staff were great (even complimented me for choosing to eat Sri Lankan style). Would definitely recommend👍

Hidden Gem Restaurant The tourist driver, Suresh, took us to this little-known gem of a buffet house for lunch during our visit to Pasikuda. The dining houses were of traditional mud and clay with thatched roof covering. We could see the various meals being cooked over wood fired hearths. It was a delicious meal of typical Sri Lankan rice and curry. All vegetable dishes were from locally grown fresh veggies and rice. The meals included fried and curried chicken and lake fish. The food was served on a lotus leaf. There were many tourists enjoying a tasty and typical Sri Lankan village meal. The cost was very reasonable at Rs 3000 per person. The dining huts were very clean and overlooking extensive rice fields allowing us to enjoy natural breeze whilst having our meal. I was personally very impressed as this place not only employ local staff but also sources all their raw materials locally empowering many local - not so well to do - villagers. Highly recommended!!

We came there at about 18:00 and although we were the only 2 guests at the time they prepared the whole buffet for us, a variety of 3 different kinds of rice and 15 veggi currys (there would have been the option of chicken and fish as well) and varied desserts. We especially liked the lentils, the pumpkin and the manioc. But really every single curry was so tasty and well seasoned. The spices complemented the ingredients and did not blank them out. This was easily our best food experience in all of Sri Lanka. Staff is extremely friendly and ambience is nice and cozy, a bit outside the city near the rice pads. We paid 5600 Rs for 2 people, juices and water included. Should you stay in Polonnaruwa we definitely recommend you visit them !

Ist was so special and super tasty. Even we’ve arrived late, staffs and Owner and his wife kindly welcomed. Again the food was amazing! I find good also that they provide us like a ”Buffet ”, so that we can take what we want. Buffet is absolutely high-class!! I would like to come back again 😋
