The Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features well-preserved Gassho-zukuri farmhouses from the Edo period. The village is located in the Gokayama region of Kanazawa Prefecture, and it is a popular destination for tourists who come to see the beautiful scenery and historic architecture.
Suganuma is one of the three World Heritage sites of gassho style houses. The other two sites are Ainokura (just east of Suganuma) and Shirakawago in Gifu. Beautiful scenery with gassho style houses and mountains in serenity.

Quiet and peaceful village, not very touristy and can be reached by Kaetsuno bus. There’s a coined-base locker at bus stop so you can drop your bags there with $100. You can also take a short walk to visit Gokayama via tunnel connecting 2 villages. Few tea houses and restaurants are available in the village so you can enjoy hot matcha green tea. Amazing experience in such a cold day
Truc Nguyen — Google review
Not too far from Shirakawa-Go, pretty quiet which is good if you like to avoid all the tourists. They have an elevator to go down to the village from the parking lot. You need to walk through a tunnel (maybe just 3-4 mins)
Chat Jaksuwong — Google review
Nice quiet little start to our Gassho houses tour. Parking ¥500. The little museum was worth a visit at ¥300 for both. Went to Shirakawago afterwards (stayed the night and enjoyed the early morning with no crowds, didn’t enter any houses there as did a mini version here) and Hida Village Takayama ¥700 parking ¥300 (my favourite of the three)

An interesting place to see a variety of Gasshou houses, the site in split in two with one side being a beautiful village, and the other a collection of different buildings often used for school trips. Very quiet when visiting.

Assalamualaikum brother, we came to this place on February 11th 2023. This place has a lot of interesting views. You can see the traditional Japanese houses here. In winter there will be more interesting spot here. This place looks like Shirakawago but smaller area. The parking area was 500¥ and you will guided to use elevator facilities for going to Suganuma village or Gokayama village. Recommended place to visit.
Asrul Sudiar — Google review
Small folk village. Parking costs something like 500 yen. Not much to see. Much smaller than other folk villages in the region. Take the elevator down after paying for the parking. Was raining while we were visiting and some shops were closed. Imagine it would be beautiful in the winter, but we went in May. Good for pit stop if it’s along your route (which it was for us); skip it otherwise. Not worth a detour.

This morning, we had a brilliant time exploring the World Heritage site Suganuma Gassho. It's truly magnificent, with its timeless beauty and charm. It's like discovering a hidden gem. Also, the two museums here are definitely worth a visit. The museum staff were really helpful, and there's even a translated English version book for the items displayed inside the museum.

If you want to see something very different and to have an amazing experience of how people used to live in the mountains, you should definitely visit this place. It is beautiful, interesting, educating. You can try a traditional food which was very tasty.

The Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in a picturesque mountain village in Japan. The village features traditional Gassho-style houses that have been preserved from the Edo period. These houses retain their original shape on the outside but are modernized on the inside, allowing residents to live a contemporary lifestyle while maintaining their cultural heritage.
An absolute mountain fairytale land. The landscape is amazing. It’s exactly what I imagine when I think of an old small mountain village in Japan. It’s so beautiful and all the old buildings are a wonder. People actually still live here! About 50. If you have the opportunity, 100% come here and stay the night in one of the traditional houses and eat the local food Not a lot of English speakers but really you don’t need to use it. They have maps and everything all in English

(Translated by Google) I had been to Shirakawa-go before, but this time I visited Ainokura village. The parking fee was 500 yen. Take the elevator from the side of the parking lot and go through the tunnel below, and you will see Ainokura Village. It had a feeling of daily life, and the atmosphere was different from Shirakawa-go, which was very nice. There are restaurants, souvenir shops, cafes, etc. in the village, so please stop by and have a look.

We inserted a visit to Kanazawa in our tour of Japan, between Tokyo and Kyoto since it is easily reachable by Shinkansen and include a lot of historical town and villages. As part of the visit, we booked a one day bus tour from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Gokayama. From Shirakawa-go, it took about 1 hour to reach Ainokura. As soon as we arrived we went to the observatory to take scenic photographs. We then had about 30 minutes to visit the village but this was not enough so plan at least 2 hours if possible.

Date Visited: 11/12/2023 Arrived in the morning and it was a lot less crowded than Shirakawago. The entrance fee is ¥500/car. There are a couple vantage points overlooking the village. You can easily spend an hour here.

This is one of the UNESCO site. This village is the village of the Edo Japan. They still retain the original shape of the houses but now the inside is modern. You can buy gifts or eat here. There are people living modern life here.

A village with rich heritage. Ainokura is much smaller and less crowded than the popular Shirakawa-go. If you prefer less crowd, this is a good place to go in addition to Shirakawa-go. Its about 50 minutes bus ride from Ainokura to Shirakawa-go.These houses are really amazing to look at when up close. A must visit!!

(Translated by Google) There was still a lot of snow left and it was very atmospheric. However, this year there was very little snow. Actually, I wanted to take a picture of the whole view from the top, but there is still a lot of snow left, so I can't climb to the top unless I borrow boots. I was able to take a good picture because there are rustic and nice gassho-zukuri houses scattered around. I paid the entrance fee and was able to see the inside, but the inside of the house smoked in the hearth was very impressive, and it was very nice to hear the story.

Really amazing place to visit. There are restrooms (toilets), and an information centre where you can rent boots and jackets if you don't have the right gear. It was snowing heavily when we visited in late December 2022 which added to the magic. The village closes to tourism at 5, but it was already dark before then.

Husband and I went there by bus (world heritage). It's probably better to go by car. The village has 2 small shops, a few ryokans, and two small museums. You can also make your own washi paper (700yen).

I have booked this trip via the Nohi Bus website. If you want to go on this trip, you can book in advance like me or the day itself from the Nohi bus center early in the morning. But I recommend to do it in advance. You never know if it is fully booked or not. This place is part of the UNSECO. It is a small village. There are still people living in the houses. We were given 40mins here. There are not many things here. Since it is a small village. However, what I appreciate most is how they preserved such expensive houses. Not easy to maintain since the raw materials are difficult to obtain.
JooZoo WG — Google review
This village is much quieter than Ogimachi Village likely because it is not quite as convenient to reach, especially in winter. The village is prettier than Ogimachi but will only take about 1 hour to visit at a slow pace. Make sure to go to the viewpoint.

500 yen for parking. A really picturesque village that is inhabited, hence you will see all the creatures comfort outside of the old architecture ( has, weather heater, electricity lines etc) which is a great juxtaposition of living with current times. The previous emperor has stayed in this village before while on a holiday and I can understand why. The lovely shrine is also worth a visit as it has really old cedars. Do not miss walking up to the best viewpoint which is located beside the carpark before leaving (first photo)!

I would definitely come back, if only to chat more with the proprietor. We happened to get there just as he was starting the fire in the morning, so he chatted with us at length about the history of the building and the area. Also sang a traditional song for us and demonstrated several traditional instruments from the area. The house has been in his family for generations and he grew up in it. The upper floors are chock full of items his family used in their daily lives. Very cool to see the internal structure of a designated national cultural treasure. Note that the only heat is from the fire on the first floor and shoes are not allowed inside: wear warm socks in winter! Also, I am unsure whether the proprietor speaks English.

Zentokuji, a renowned Buddhist temple located in Japan, is a magnificent place with a wide array of Nagano delicacies available in the surrounding streets. The temple itself is impressive and offers breathtaking views from its gate. Visitors are encouraged to explore the main worship hall as well as a mysterious tunnel of darkness, which requires caution due to its low height. Zentokuji holds a certain charm, particularly when music fills the air, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
One of the great temples in Japan. The streets lining the approach has great selection of Nagono specialities such as Oyaki, Soba and Chestnut rice. The temple is grand and it is worth climbing the gate for the cool views. Be sure to venture into the main worship hall and into the tunnel of darkness. Make you watch your head and I won't mention anything else about it.

I love this place. It’s so old a mysterious - especially when music is playing and you know it’s just tranquil - in a sense. Babies will enjoy this experience too, not that I have one or tested this theory, however, it’s all too possible you’d get some laughter out of your child - or someone else’s. No questions asked. It’s highly recommended!

Matsuya is a charming eatery nestled in a UNESCO site, offering a delightful dining experience for lunch or dinner. The menu boasts 99% vegetarian options, with the exception of one fish cake in the soba noodles. The hot soba soup is described as flavorful and light, accompanied by pleasant noodles and fragrant vegetables. The restaurant provides both western-style seating and traditional zashiki at the rear of the building.

Great place for a delicious and inexpensive meal. They offer both western style seating and zashiki(in the rear of the building). The menu has Japanese and English text, but some items are only in Japanese. If you're unsure of what it is, the ability to read Japanese can help, but motioning toward the item is fine for ordering. After you finish your meal, be sure to check out all the おみやげ(souvenirs).

This is a hidden gem in a UNESCO site. If you are looking for lunch or dinner, take the time to eat here. If you’re really hungry order one of the set menu. It’s 99% vegetarian except for 1 fish cake I. The soba noodles. And then I’m not even sure it has fish in it. As a meat lover I can definitively say that that I wouldn’t miss meat if all vegetarian food taste this good. The hot soba soup is flavorful and light, the noodles pleasant to eat. The temperature is crispy while the vegetables were fragrant. All the pickled and cooked vegetables were delicious as well as the fried tofu. I ordered extra sides. It realizing how much they give you so I ended up taking the rice onegiri with us. Overall, a very pleasant experience in a beautiful village on a beautiful day.

The restaurant's specialty lies in its delicate preparation of Iwana nigiri sushi, which though subtle in taste due to its white flesh, still pleases palates.

Iwana nigiri sushi is delicious with fresh eel! Kakiage of white shrimp is very voluminous and a little oily. Soba is not a specialty store, so the taste is as expected. Jippensha is a fantastic spot to indulge in handmade udon and soba noodles. Surprisingly, the quality rivals that of popular tourist destinations nearby. Located just a short distance from relatives' residence, らーめん真太 is a delightful local eatery that offers a variety of noodle options apart from ramen. Their soba noodles are distinct, not like the usual buckwheat variant. The menu includes enticing choices such as shio, ebi wantan shio, tori, and tan tan men. Super delicious local place minutes from my relatives’ house. They have different types of noodles than ramen, called soba, but not like buckwheat noodles. I was recommended a popular local restaurant called Ramen Shinta just a little south in Nanto City. They had a rather large menu of ramen, but for first timers, they recommended their Salt Ramen, but apparently the Chicken Ramen is also popular. Who am I to doubt their recommendations? So I ordered a Shio DX with all the toppings for 1390¥ with deeper broth for 80¥ more. Based on other reviewers, I also ordered a Chicken Nanban for 480¥. That meal was very satisfyingly delicious. The deeper broth option was definitely worth it, as it was strong, salty, and savory with a nice hint of chicken stock. There were two kinds of chicken, a slice of chashu, and a half-egg, every one soft and perfect. The thing noodles were a nice medium texture and reasonably portioned. And that Chicken Nanban... crunchy, crispy, salty, dripping with egg, green onion, and tartar sauce on top. Enjoy it first while its hot and you'll be in chicken heaven. Coming here might be worth it for this alone.

(Translated by Google) World Heritage "Gokayama" I think it's a beautiful snowy landscape right now. I visited in the summer of 2021 I have been to Shirakawago many times. First visit to Gokayama Despite searching with car navigation and Google Maps After getting lost, I finally arrived at the parking lot Nantes from there! Take the elevator down to the village of Gokayama... What is an elevator deep in the mountains? World heritage is amazing! Gokayama in Nanto City, located at the southwestern tip of Toyama Prefecture, There are 40 villages along the Shogawa River, and the scenery of mountain villages makes you feel nostalgic as if you had slipped back in time. Among them, in the two villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, there are many traditional buildings, including gassho-zukuri houses, where people still live. In 1995, the village of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, together with the Ogimachi village of Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture, was established in recognition of its valuable rural landscape centered on gassho-zukuri houses that represent Japanese wooden culture, as well as its culture that has been handed down from generation to generation. was registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site. This restaurant I chose for lunch is just right! This shop is run while living in a world heritage site. For a wonderful landlord who does everything from cooking to serving I was treated The tatami room-style interior that integrates with the living space of the family I was surprised at first, but... in a world heritage site It was fun to get a feel for how they lived. I asked because I wanted to eat the specialty "Gokayama tofu". Surprisingly extensive menu There is also a single item ~ gozen cuisine, and the tension rises ・Gokayama tofu Tofu You can fully enjoy the flavor and taste of the beans. The soy sauce prepared for the number of people is also delicious. ・Soba with wild vegetables Noodles are normal There is no doubt that wild vegetables are delicious. ・Fried rock fish It will take some time, but is that okay with you? I was asked, so it was worth ordering with the waiting time. There was enough ♡ Until now, in a water tank like a natural waterway next to my house Deep-fried whole large rock fish that was swimming energetically! There is a cut in the back and it looks like I've never seen it before Deeply impressed by the beautiful deep-fried rock fish ✿︎˘︶˘✿︎ ).。.:* ♬︎*゜ Because it's fresh! It looks like this Slowly fried so you can even eat the bones I had it with homemade ponzu sauce. It goes without saying that the rock fish is delicious. The taste of ponzu is also good! I thought that I would like to eat this again if I passed nearby There was also rock fish sashimi on the menu I bitterly regretted that I should have eaten live sashimi. The tofu was also delicious, so I definitely want to visit again. I would like to recommend it to those who go to Gokayama (Original)

Japanese traditional style restaurant in Gokayama. It’s in the traditional Japanese house “Gassho Zukuri” style with tatami floor. Warm steamed rice, soup, ayu fish (river fish), pickles, and hot tea are enough to warm empty stomach in the winter. I went there with friends during winter and it was raining. We were happy to find the restaurant we could warm ourselves.

It is said that you can see different faces in all seasons, but I visited in the summer while touring. Although it was hot, we ate soba and tofu at a temperature similar to that of a summer resort. Even if I don’t like vegetables, I can eat them all. Although I didn’t order grilled rockfish, the boss also warmly invited tourists to see how to grill rockfish. It was a comfortable and relaxing dining environment.

(Translated by Google) Visited around 11:30 on a Saturday during the autumn leaves season. Since the weather was drizzling, I was the first to arrive. It was cold, so I ordered shrimp tempura soba. One shrimp tempura topped with sweet potato tempura for 980 yen. It's a bit expensive if you think about it normally, but if you consider that it covers some of the maintenance and management costs of the gassho-style building, it's a reasonable amount. There was nothing special about the taste, but the soup was relatively light and delicious. Above all, I am grateful to be able to eat in an authentic gassho style setting.
